Infection prevention and control in residential congregate settings for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities: A learning needs assessment.

Infection prevention and control (IPC) practices are important to prevent the spread of infectious diseases in congregate residential settings, including group homes for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). These settings face unique challenges and often receive fewer IPC resources than other congregate residence types. The New York City Health Department conducted a learning needs assessment comprised of a survey among leadership (n=41) and focus groups with frontline staff (n=9). Results highlight the need for IPC guidance tailored specifically to IDD residential se

The ADHD advantage: Comorbid attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is associated with earlier diagnosis and better academic outcomes in children with specific language disorder.

Specific learning disorder (SLD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulties in reading, writing, and mathematics despite normal intelligence. One of the most common comorbidity of SLD is attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, differences between patients with SLD alone and SLD with ADHD remain underinvestigated. This study aims to compare clinical and psychosocial characteristics between these two groups. This retrospective study analyzes pediatric psychiatric patient data from Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) at the Learning Disorder Outpatient

Etiological Diagnoses Versus Descriptive Developmental Diagnoses.

Jane is a 7-year-old girl who presented for a developmental-behavioral pediatrics (DBP) evaluation because of parental concern about developmental delays and atypical behavior. Jane is a former term infant who was small for gestational age. She experienced some initial feeding difficulties and was discharged home from the nursery at 5 days of age. As a toddler, Jane was mildly delayed in acquiring gross motor developmental milestones, but she was more significantly delayed in acquiring fine motor and adaptive developmental milestones. She began receiving private occupational therapy (OT) servi

Pocket guide Biologics in upper and lower airway diseases 2026 by EUFOREA.

BACKGROUND: The process of human response to natural disasters and its mechanisms as revealed by historical events still has a broad significance for modern society. This study analyzed the disaster relief process and the social response for two floods in China: the Yongding River flood in 1801 and the Yellow River flood in 1841. These two floods reflect the different response processes between the national and provincial capitals during a stage of climate cooling and social transition in the Qing dynasty. RESULTS: Applying methods of historical documents analysis and qualitatively comparativ

From clinical and typical separation to autism spectrum disorder and global developmental delay differentiation: Interpretable eye-tracking-based machine learning.

In clinical practice, objectively distinguishing children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) from those with typical development (TD) and other neurodevelopmental conditions with overlapping symptoms, such as global developmental delay (GDD), is critical for improving developmental outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of eye-tracking-based machine learning (ML) models in distinguishing children with developmental concerns (ASD + GDD) from TD children, and in further differentiating ASD from GDD. A total of 168 toddlers (45 ASD, 56 GDD, and 67 TD; aged 18-48 months) viewed

Abnormal Developmental Trajectories in the Brain in Individuals With Reading Disability: Developmental changes in reading disability.

It is unknown how the brain supports reading development in individuals with reading disability (RD). In a cross-sectional study (i.e., children, adolescents, adults), we found an age-related shift in brain activation from posterior to anterior part of the left occipitotemporal (OT) area in typical readers, supporting orthographic specialization, while RD readers did not show such a developmental shift. Furthermore, RD readers did not show age-related increase in the left superior temporal gyrus as did the typical readers, suggesting persistent phonological deficits. On the other hand, RD read

Gene-Environment Interplay in Reading Performance.

Genetic factors are known to play a role in shaping reading abilities and their underlying cognitive processes. However, understanding how genetic and environmental factors interact to influence reading outcomes remains largely unknown. By evaluating the interplay between genetic and environmental influences on reading performance, this study aims to provide insights into the complex mechanisms underlying reading abilities. To this aim, we leveraged the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development dataset, considering socioeconomic indicators including household income and parental education, along

Technology-Based Writing-Qualitative Study of the Writing Process When Students With Dyslexia Use Speech-to-Text.

This qualitative study examines the writing processes of four students (aged 10-12) with severe dyslexia in an educational context, using Hayes and Berninger's (2014) writing process model as the theoretical framework. The participants attended a 7-week instructional program focusing on speech-to-text (STT). Their writing processes were examined through screencasts of verbal protocols during writing with reading and writing technology (RWT), with a particular focus on STT. The transcribed screencasts were coded and analysed. Our analysis shows that although no conventional spelling errors were

Profiling Chinese children with symptoms of SpLD, ADHD, or ASD: a transdiagnostic and biopsychosocial study.

BACKGROUND: Specific learning difficulties (SpLD), ADHD, and ASD are the most common neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) found in mainstream schools. In addition to formal NDD diagnoses, children may exhibit NDD symptoms without meeting full diagnostic criteria, and heterogeneities and commonalities are frequently observed regardless of whether children have been diagnosed or not, raising concerns about the lack of inclusive support for all. Following the transdiagnostic approach and biopsychosocial model, this study aims to cluster and profile children with these symptoms via cognitive, psych

Global, regional, and national burden of chronic respiratory diseases and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, 1990-2023: a Global Burden of Disease study.

Chronic respiratory diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, pneumoconiosis, interstitial lung disease (ILD) and pulmonary sarcoidosis, are major global causes of mortality and morbidity. Although the COVID-19 pandemic has influenced acute respiratory health, its impact on chronic respiratory conditions remains unclear. We estimated the global, regional and national burden of chronic respiratory diseases from 1990 to 2023, including risk factors, and evaluated how these burdens have shifted during the COVID-19 pandemic using the Global Burden of Disease Study 2

Assistive technology for developmental conditions: A scientometric analysis.

Assistive technology plays a pivotal role in supporting individuals with developmental conditions by fostering independence and addressing needs across physical, cognitive, and communicative domains. Despite its benefits, widespread adoption remains limited due to high costs, usability challenges, and limited real-world applicability. This study offers a comprehensive overview of assistive technology's role in the context of developmental conditions by outlining key research areas and influential publications. Using a scientometric approach, we examined 1322 documents from Scopus and their 44,

Resolving the mystery of Chinese developmental dyslexia: in search of predictors and early markers.

Developmental dyslexia is a specific learning disability for which early identification and intervention are crucial. In alphabetic languages, phonological awareness and letter naming are well-established early markers of reading disorders. For developmental dyslexia in Chinese, a language that differs from alphabetic languages in multiple aspects, little is known about its early markers. Here, we report findings from a 2.5-year longitudinal behavioral study and a functional neuroimaging study designed to identify the neural underpinnings of predictors of Chinese reading disability. In Experim

The complexity in deaf and hard-of-hearing multilingual learner education.

Deaf and hard-of-hearing Multilingual Learners (DMLs) are Deaf and hard-of-hearing students who are either born outside of the country they currently receive schooling in or have both parents born outside of that country, using a language other than the national spoken language at home. This group is growing in numbers and contributes significantly to the increasing linguistic and cultural diversity in Deaf education. This systematic review synthesizes findings from 17 peer-reviewed empirical studies, identifying four educational levels relevant to DMLs: context, organization, educators, and s

Placental Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 Insufficiency Drives Neurodevelopmental Disorder-Relevant Behavioral Changes with Sex-Specific Vulnerabilities.

Preterm birth, placental insufficiency, and other perinatal adversities lead to the loss of placental support including critical hormones, such as Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1), required for neurodevelopment. Decreased IGF1 and preterm birth are associated with neurodevelopmental disorder risk, including autism spectrum disorder. Whether placental Igf1 insufficiency drives neurodevelopmental risks is not understood. To understand these mechanisms, placental-targeted CRISPR manipulation in mice was employed to induce placental Igf1 insufficiency. Subsequently, embryonic forebrain developm

Affects of ableism in medical education: happiness, resignation, and the disabled killjoy.

Exclusion is not only an experience but a feeling. Yet, studies of disabled medical learners have paid little attention to their emotions. Affect theory provides a lens for studying how emotions are produced by socio-political ways of being and knowing. In this study, we investigated affects circulating through disabled student narratives to explore how these students perceived disability and agency within an ableist system. We conducted a reflexive thematic analysis of 674 open-text responses by disabled medical students from the 2019 and 2020 AAMC Year Two Questionnaire about their experienc
