Transcultural validation in Soninke of a language assessment tool: The Avicenne ELAL©.

Children of migrants are often exposed to more than one language from an early age. The Avicenne ELAL© test has been created to better assess language skills, avoid misdiagnosing learning disabilities, and inform early interventions. Plurilingual children aged 3.5 to 6.5 take the test in their mother tongues, with an interpreter's assistance. The test comprises three scales: Comprehension, Expression, and Storytelling. The objectives of this study were to describe steps of the transcultural validation of the Avicenne ELAL© for the Soninke culture and language, both for children living in a mon

Unraveling nonliteral meaning: Figurative competence in autism spectrum disorder and dyslexia.

The aim of the current study was to examine figurative competence among upper-elementary Greek-speaking children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and dyslexia compared to typically developing (TD) peers, with a specific focus on how structural language skills (i.e., receptive vocabulary and morphosyntax), nonlinguistic factors (i.e., chronological age and nonverbal reasoning ability), and reading comprehension (RC) contribute to figurative language understanding. A total of 105 children (35 per group; M = 10.5 years, SD = 1), matched for age, gender, and nonverbal reasoning ability had part

Intact behavioral but atypical neural correlates of visual statistical learning in adults with developmental dyslexia.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine the neural and behavioral correlates of visual statistical learning in adults with and without developmental dyslexia (DD), using a predictor-target paradigm. Reaction times (RTs) and event-related potentials (ERPs) were used to assess participants' sensitivity to predictor-target contingencies that varied throughout the task. METHODS: English-speaking neurotypical adults (N = 36) and those with DD (N = 16) were engaged in a visual statistical learning task while RTs and ERPs were measured. In Phase 1, participants' sensitivity to the contingencie

Demographic and environmental predictors of self-determination in Turkish students with and without disabilities: A classical and machine learning-based analysis.

BACKGROUND: The substantial variability in educational opportunities across individual and environmental conditions in Türkiye provides a meaningful context for examining associations between self-determination and contextual factors. However, the absence of culturally adapted student-report measures continues to constrain empirical analyses of these relationships. AIM: This study (1) adapted and validated the Turkish version of the AIR Self-Determination Scale-Student Form and (2) identified contextual predictors of self-determination using both classical statistical analyses and machine lea

The E-Protein Daughterless Regulates Olfactory Learning of Adult Drosophila melanogaster.

Daughterless (Da), the Drosophila melanogaster homolog of mammalian E-protein transcription factor 4 (TCF4), is well studied in fruit fly embryonic development but its functions in adult nervous system are poorly understood. Mutations in human TCF4 gene lead to intellectual disabilities such as Pitt-Hopkins syndrome and TCF4 has also been linked to schizophrenia. Here, to explore the roles of Da in the Drosophila mature brain, we map Da DNA binding sites and study the transcriptomics of the brains where Da function is inhibited by pan-neuronal Extramacrohaete (Emc) overexpression, in both male

Medical student preparedness to address healthcare disparities among individuals with disabilities: An analysis of the Council of Academic Family Medicine Educational Research Alliance Survey 2020.

BACKGROUND: Nearly one in four Americans live with a disability, yet healthcare systems often fail to adequately meet the needs of this population, resulting in significant health disparities. The disparities faced by people with disabilities (PWD) can be attributed to a lack of education for medical professionals at all levels. OBJECTIVE: This exploratory study investigates medical students' exposure to disability-related content and their self-perceived preparedness to care for PWD. METHODS: Using data from the 2020 Council of Academic Family Medicine's Educational Research Alliance (CERA)

Exploring the social factors influencing the sense of belonging among medical students with disabilities.

INTRODUCTION: Medical universities have become more aware of disability inclusion, and have begun taking cognizance of the importance of a supportive environment for students with disabilities. Faculty members can mitigate challenges to legitimacy and belonging by creating safe learning environments built on openness, humility, and actively valuing each learner. However, the factors contributing to these students' sense of belonging in medical university settings remain under-explored. To address this issue, the present study examines social factors influencing the sense of belonging for medic

The Effects of Repeated Reading Interventions on the Oral Reading Fluency of Middle School Students With Reading Difficulties and Disabilities.

Fluency is a multidimensional construct that requires automaticity with foundational skills. Fluency is not an end in itself but serves as a bridge between decoding and reading comprehension. However, many secondary students struggle with proficient reading and fail to attain the most functional levels of literacy, even after receiving intensive reading interventions. The current study investigated the effects of repeated reading interventions on the oral reading fluency of adolescents at risk for and with reading disabilities. Sixty-eight students in Grades 6 through 8 (35 female, 33 male) we

Ten Core Concepts for Ensuring Data Equity in Public Health.

IMPORTANCE: Public health decisions increasingly rely on large-scale data and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and mobile health. However, many populations-including those in rural areas, with disabilities, experiencing homelessness, or living in low- and middle-income regions of the world-remain underrepresented in health datasets, leading to biased findings and suboptimal health outcomes for certain subgroups. Addressing data inequities is critical to ensuring that technological and digital advances improve health outcomes for all. OBSERVATIONS: This article proposes 10

Denoising eye movement signals using a novel signal processing framework to preserve oculomotor integrity in dyslexia.

Eye movement analysis serves as a powerful tool for early dyslexia detection. Signal quality issues, signal degradation from noise, drift, and motion artifacts, remain a major obstacle to reliable eye movement analysis. To overcome these challenges and enhance the quality of eye movement data, we proposed a two-stage framework consisting of primary signal denoising and Adaptive recursive enhancement. In the first stage, denoising using filters such as the Savitzky-Golay (SG) filter, the Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) filter, the finite impulse response (FIR) filter, and the Median filter are
