The psychosocial impact of erythropoietic protoporphyria in childhood: a guide for parents.

INTRODUCTION: Erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP) and X-linked protoporphyria (XLP), collectively referred to here as EPP, are rare inherited disorders of heme biosynthesis characterized by severe cutaneous photosensitivity. EPP imposes significant psychosocial challenges, including activity limitations and social isolation. PURPOSE: This study aimed to characterize how the psychosocial challenges of EPP evolve across developmental stages by eliciting perspectives from parents of children with EPP. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional qualitative survey study. Eligible participants were r

The Empathy Hierarchy: Unique Associations of Childhood Callous Unemotional Traits and Autism Spectrum Disorder Symptoms.

Child conduct problems commonly co-occur with callous-unemotional (CU) traits and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), which are both associated with empathy deficits; however, their unique associations are poorly understood because few studies consider the high overlap between CU traits and ASD. This study addressed this knowledge gap by investigating the unique associations between CU traits and ASD symptoms, and components of empathy (attention to others' distress, emotion recognition, understanding emotional states, empathic responding), and differences between children classified into clinical

"I'm never enough": Associations of childhood emotional abuse subtypes with overweight preoccupation and dietary restraint among women.

Childhood emotional abuse from authority figures encompasses verbal abuse, emotional rejection, and overexpectations. Although global emotional abuse is an established correlate of body dissatisfaction and disordered eating, the unique roles of these specific subtypes remain underexamined. Across two studies of adult women recruited from CloudResearch (Ns = 2566; 824), we evaluated associations between authority figure abuse subtypes, body image, and dietary restraint. Bivariate correlations revealed that all subtypes related to poorer body image and higher restraint. Hierarchical regressions

Associations and mechanisms between childhood adversity and irritability or trait anger across the lifespan: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Childhood adversity (CA) is a robust predictor of psychopathology later in life and has been linked to numerous transdiagnostic symptom presentations. One such presentation, irritability, has garnered increasing interest given its presence across internalizing and externalizing disorders and associations with greater functional impairment. Preliminary work has demonstrated associations between CA and irritability; however, no systematic review or meta-analysis has examined these associations or the mechanisms by which these constructs are connected. METHODS: PubMed, PsycInfo, and

Estimating the Economic Value of Supported Online Parent-Led Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to Prevent Child Anxiety Problems: Economic Evaluation of the MYCATS Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Childhood anxiety disorders are common and lead to substantial negative long-term outcomes in various life domains. Although digital interventions for preventing childhood anxiety problems have been increasingly used in the recent decade, there is limited evidence documenting their cost-effectiveness (CE). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the CE of a parent-led online cognitive behavioral therapy with therapist support (OSI+TS) alongside usual school practice (USP), compared to USP alone for children aged 4-7 years at risk of anxiety disorders identified through universal s

Mapping reproducible brain-based depression stratification across clinical, cognitive, and neurotransmitter dimensions.

Identifying reproducible brain-based stratifications across independent cohorts is critical for parsing heterogeneity in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), yet robust profiles spanning micro- and macroscales remain poorly defined. We applied stability-based clustering to cortical thickness (CT) data from 1531 MDD individuals in UK Biobank (UKB), with replication in 144 inpatients from IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital (HSR). Two stable clusters emerged (normalized stability = 0.125) that generalized to a hold-out UKB sample with 96.5% accuracy (majority-cluster baseline = 59.5%). The clusters differed

The ACE of Hearts Serious Game for Young People With Adverse Childhood Experiences: Experience-Based Co-Design and Agile Development Study.

BACKGROUND: Young people exposed to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are at risk of poor mental and physical health across the life course, yet many struggle to access timely help. Serious games offer an engaging, scalable, and stigma-reducing support, but few are co-designed with young people who have lived experience of ACEs, and methodological accounts of how participatory design is operationalized alongside software delivery are scarce. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to (1) develop and apply a novel methodological framework integrating experience-based co-design (EBCD) with agile game developmen

Composite Summary Scores Capture Obesogenic Eating Risk Among Preadolescents Using the Child Eating Behaviour Questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: The Child Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (CEBQ) measures multiple appetitive traits. We used a data-driven approach to identify simplified composite scores across traits to summarise obesogenic eating risk. METHODS: From 354 unrelated 9-to-12-year-olds, we examined 29 items from CEBQ domains measuring food approach or avoidance: food responsiveness, enjoyment of food, emotional over-eating, desire to drink, satiety responsiveness, slowness in eating, and emotional under-eating. Factor analysis assuming a single factor was used to reduce the number of items in one composite, obesog

Association of smoking reduction with comorbid psychiatric symptoms including ADHD, depression, anxiety, and alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Current literature supports the hypothesis that patients with comorbid psychiatric symptoms are at pronounced risk of relapse. Studies investigating the co-occurrence of psychiatric symptoms and smoking cessation success in the general population are limited. We aimed to investigate the associations between smoking reduction (including cessation) and various psychiatric diagnoses, including Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), depression, anxiety and Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), among adult smokers 12 months after a smoking cessation attempt. METHODS: Sixty-eight patien

Efficacy of mindfulness-based interventions for children and adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder in childhood. Although mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have been proposed as promising non-pharmacological treatments, evidence regarding their efficacy in children and adolescents with ADHD remains inconsistent. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science was conducted up to December 31, 2025, supplemented by manual screening of reference lists. Eligible studies were randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in which mindfulne

Perinatal Depression, Maternal Engagement and Child Social-Emotional Development: A Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Evidence gaps remain regarding the influence of perinatal depression on mother-child engagement and child social-emotional development. OBJECTIVES: We assessed relationships between perinatal depression, mother-child engagement and child social-emotional development among Kenyan mother-child pairs. METHODS: Mother-child pairs attending maternal-child health services in four sites in Western Kenya were followed from pregnancy through early childhood. Study nurses serially assessed perinatal depression (pregnancy, 6 weeks, and 9 months postpartum with the Center for Epidemiologic S

IMPORTANCE: Prospective and retrospective measures of childhood maltreatment identify largely different groups of individuals. However, it is unclear if these measures are differentially associated with psychopathology. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the associations of prospective and retrospective measures of childhood maltreatment with psychopathology. DATA SOURCES: Based on a preregistered protocol, Embase, PsycInfo, and MEDLINE were searched for peer-reviewed studies published by January 1, 2023, that measured the associations of prospective and retrospective measures of child maltreatment with

Quantifying the fatal and non-fatal burden of disease associated with child growth failure, 2000-2023: a systematic analysis from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023.

BACKGROUND: Child growth failure (CGF), which includes underweight, wasting, and stunting, is among the factors most strongly associated with mortality and morbidity in children younger than 5 years worldwide. Poor height and bodyweight gain arise from a variety of biological and sociodemographic factors and are associated with increased vulnerability to infectious diseases. We used data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2023 to estimate CGF prevalence, the risk of infectious diseases associated with CGF, and the disease mortality, morbidity, and overal

Emotional Dysregulation and Psychological Sequelae in Drug-Facilitated Sexual Assault Survivors.

Although drug-facilitated sexual assault (DFSA) cases account for a significant portion of sexual assaults (SA), their psychological and emotional consequences-beyond Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-remain underexplored. The current study addresses this gap by examining the psychopathological symptoms and emotion regulation difficulties in DFSA and non-DFSA survivors, identifying emotional dysregulation as a potential predictor of psychological sequelae. The sample included 39 women SA survivors from a clinical sample who experienced an isolated assault within the past year (20 non-DFSA,

Symptom Complexity Subtypes Show Distinct Individualism-Collectivism Orientations in Adolescents With Depressive Episodes, With Loneliness Mediating Their Relationship.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent depressive episodes exhibit significant symptom complexity and heterogeneity, necessitating an integrated approach to identify distinct subtypes. Cultural orientations (individualism and collectivism) and loneliness are crucial factors impacting adolescent mental health. This study identifies symptom complexity subtypes in Chinese adolescents with depressive episodes, investigates cultural orientation differences between these subtypes, and explores the role of loneliness. METHODS: A total of 110 adolescents were included. K-means clustering was used to generate sympt

Social Skills and Emotion Recognition in Children With Elevated Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome Symptoms: A Comparative Study With Children Diagnosed With ADHD and Typically Developing Peers.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome (CDS) is increasingly viewed as a distinct childhood condition. Although it overlaps with ADHD in some features, emerging evidence suggests a unique behavioral and cognitive profile. However, research examining social functioning and emotion recognition in children with pure CDS remains limited. METHODS: This study compared social competence and facial emotion recognition abilities among children aged 8 to 12 years across three groups: those with elevated CDS symptoms (n = 43), those with ADHD (n = 40), and healthy controls (n = 43). Social function

The lived experiences of parents of children with cerebral palsy. A phenomenological study in a tertiary care facility, Ghana.

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral palsy is a group of permanent movement disorders that appear in early childhood, affecting muscle tone, posture, and movement. This study explored the lived experiences of parents of children with cerebral palsy. METHOD: A phenomenological qualitative research approach was used to collect data from parents of children with cerebral palsy. Interviews were conducted with purposely selected parents of children until data saturation at the 13th interview. Data was analysed using thematic analysis. Four themes were identified and included: 1) burden of caring for children wi

Conduct disorder with limited prosocial emotions: a multimethod study in criminal justice-involved boys.

BACKGROUND: More than 10 years after its introduction in DSM-5, support for the 'limited prosocial emotions' specifier (LPE) for the diagnosis of conduct disorder (CD) remains scarce, possibly because studies failed to comprehensively assess the specifier and to include important characteristics. This study was designed to tackle both major limitations. METHODS: In a sample of 323 criminal justice-involved male adolescents (ages 16-17 years), diagnostic interviews were used to differentiate between males who meet criteria for both CD and the DSM-5 specifier (CD + LPE) and males who only meet

Using network analysis to provide new insight of the relationship between childhood trauma, family environment and depressive symptoms in adolescents with major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Ample evidence supported that childhood trauma and family environment are closely linked to adolescent depression. This study aimed to establish a network of childhood trauma, family environment and depressive symptoms among adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD), and to identify the central and bridge symptoms in the network. METHODS: A total of 560 adolescents diagnosed with MDD were included in the present study.
