HIV transmission behaviors, detectable HIV-RNA and curable STI prevalence among Ugandan men with HIV with reproductive goals, with and without infertility experiences.

Many men with HIV (MWH) want children. MWH with unmet reproductive goals may prioritize conception over preventing HIV/STI transmission. Therefore, we evaluated whether MWH with unmet versus met reproductive goals were more likely to have detectable HIV-RNA or STIs, and explored socio-structural factors (e.g., HIV/infertility stigma, gender dynamics) conceptualized to influence this association. We recruited 100 MWH in Uganda who reported condomless sex with intent to conceive, half had/had not fathered a child in the last year, defined as "met"/"unmet" reproductive goals. A questionnaire asse

Guillain-Barré Syndrome As the Initial Manifestation of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection: A Case Report.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute immune-mediated polyradiculoneuropathy typically triggered by an antecedent infection. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is an uncommon but recognized association, and GBS may rarely constitute the first clinical manifestation of previously undiagnosed HIV infection. A 36-year-old man presented with subacute facial diplegia, predominantly distal tetraparesis, sensory ataxia, glove-and-stocking paresthesia, and hyporeflexia. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis showed albuminocytologic dissociation; electrophysiological studies demonstrated a sensorimoto

Enhancing medical students' self-assessed competence in sexually transmitted infections: outcomes of an interdisciplinary workshop on syphilis, stigmatization and sexual history-taking.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), particularly syphilis, continue to pose a significant public health problem. In addition to medical expertise, communication skills - especially when taking a sexual history - are crucial for providing adequate patient care. Previous studies have shown that medical students often feel uncomfortable and inadequately prepared to take a sexual history. METHODS: A pre-post evaluation was conducted as part of a STI workshop for medical students (n = 33). The interdisciplinary workshop consisted of dermatological components (epidemiology, clinical

Blood Unit Discard Rates Due to Transfusion-Transmissible Infections and Non-Infectious Causes and Their Associated Factors in Eastern and Northeastern Parts of Amhara Regional State, Ethiopia: A Retrospective Cross-Sectional Study From 2022-2025.

BACKGROUND: Blood is an irreplaceable medical resource, yet blood unit discard remains a significant challenge for transfusion services. This study aimed to evaluate discard rates by integrating both infectious (TTI) and non-infectious causes and identifying factors associated with blood wastage to provide evidence to support strategies for improving blood safety. METHODS: An institutional-based retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted using data from 2022 to 2025 across Dessie, Kemise, Woldia, and Sekota Blood Banks. Data were extracted from Blood Bank databases using a structured c

Syphilis Screening Among Commercially-Insured Pregnant Women in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Congenital syphilis (CS) incidence increased by 81.7% in the United States (US) between 2020 and 2024. Syphilis screening is recommended at the first prenatal visit and at delivery, but poor compliance may lead to inadequate screening and preventable CS cases. METHODS: Using a US-wide collection of longitudinal healthcare claims data, we identified a cohort of commercially-insured pregnant women aged 15-44 years. Women were included if they had a pregnancy resulting in a live birth, stillbirth, or spontaneous abortion during 2017-2021. We described patterns of syphilis screening,

Seroprevalence and trends of transfusion-transmissible infections among blood donors in the Volta Region, Ghana: A four-year retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Blood transfusion is a life-saving intervention; however, transfusion-transmissible infections (TTIs) such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and syphilis remain major public health concerns, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This study assessed the seroprevalence and temporal trends of TTIs among blood donors in the Volta Region of Ghana and to identify the demographic factors associated with seropositivity. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted using secondary data from blood donors at H

Current Data to Inform Point-of-Care Testing for Sexually Transmitted Infections in United States Healthcare Settings: A Narrative Review.

Point-of-care testing (POCT) for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) holds promise to improve care across clinical settings in the United States (US). However, multiple barriers to widespread adoption remain, and universal use will not be appropriate. At a minimum, decision-makers require robust, real-world evidence that STI POCTs improve patient outcomes within specific clinical contexts for these tests to be reimbursed and adopted, and data among priority patient groups may help guide targeted utilization. To inform decisions in the US and identify gaps in the evidence base, we reviewed l

Seroprevalence and Potential Correlation of Transfusion-Transmitted Infections With the ABO Blood Group System Among Blood Donors in Eastern India.

BACKGROUND: Transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs) remain a significant concern in transfusion medicine due to their impact on blood safety. Understanding the distribution of TTIs among blood donors and exploring potential associations with the ABO blood group system can enhance donor screening strategies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional retrospective study was conducted among blood donors from January 2020 to December 2024. Blood donors were tested for ABO and RhD blood groups and for five mandatory TTI markers: human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepa

International Assessment of Blood Donor False-positive Infectious Disease Screening Rates and Re-entry Practices: A BEST Collaborative Study.

False-positive infectious disease screening results in blood donors can lead to unnecessary donor deferral, emotional distress, and loss of future donations. We aimed to evaluate false-positive rates and re-entry practices across several international blood collectors. In this multinational retrospective study, 17 blood collectors provided data from January 2021 through December 2023 on infectious disease screening algorithms/methodologies, false-positive rates for HIV, HBV, HCV, and syphilis, and donor re-entry processes and rates. Participants also reported deferral policies and donor commun

Prevalence and associated risk factors of anal high-risk human papillomavirus infection in unvaccinated young men who have sex with men visiting the Center of Sexual Health of Amsterdam.

BACKGROUND: Anal high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) is highly prevalent among men who have sex with men (MSM) and the main cause of anal cancer. The effectiveness of HPV vaccination in this population is highly dependent on prior HPV exposure. We aimed to assess the prevalence and determinants of anal hrHPV among young unvaccinated MSM attending the Center for Sexual Health (CSH) of Amsterdam. These findings will serve as a basis for analyses regarding the prophylactic effectiveness and population impact of HPV vaccination among MSM in the Netherlands. METHODS: All unvaccinated MSM aged 1

Effectiveness, safety, adherence and risk compensation of oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in men who have sex with men: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluate the clinical effectiveness, safety and potential risk compensation associated with oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in men who have sex with men (MSM). METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library up to 17 September 2025 for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies. The primary outcomes were HIV incidence and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Secondary outcomes included PrEP adherence and adverse events. Meta-analyses used random-effects models, presenting results as rela

Secondary syphilis with impetiginized lesions in untreated HIV infection.

Syphilis may present with atypical cutaneous manifestations in immunodeficient patients and is easily misdiagnosed. We report a 39-year-old man with untreated HIV infection presenting with widespread non-pruritic lesions initially mistaken for impetigo contagiosa. Serology confirmed secondary syphilis with Lues maligna and palmoplantar hyperkeratosis (Clavi syphilitici). This case highlights the importance of considering syphilis in patients with atypical skin lesions and HIV-related immunodeficiency.

Cross-Reactivity of Treponema pallidum Polyclonal Antibody With Mycobacterium Species.

INTRODUCTION: Mycobacteria are typically identified using the acid-fast staining technique. Prior reports have observed cross-reactivity of Treponema pallidum immunohistochemistry (IHC) with Mycobacterium species, particularly Mycobacterium leprae. Further characterization of this cross-reactivity is needed across a broader range of Mycobacterium species, including its extent, strength, and quality. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted to identify all cases of mycobacterial infection at a single institution. Cases with available histopathologic slides were included. Cas

How STI trends track changes in sexual behaviour, online dating and sexual orientation demographics: an analysis of reported bacterial STI incidence and three social behavioural surveys in the USA (2010-2024).

INTRODUCTION: Bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the USA rose substantially in the 2010s and incidence remains high, despite reported declines after the COVID-19 pandemic. We aimed to better understand potential changes that may be contributing to these epidemic trends, particularly new behavioural and demographic patterns in the online dating era since ~2010. METHODS: We used joinpoint models to examine trends in reported incidence for three notifiable bacterial STIs (ie, chlamydia, gonorrhoea and syphilis) in the USA during 2010-2024, and analysed concurrent changes in sexu
