Beyond motor dysfunction: comorbidities in children with cerebral palsy: a retrospective observational study from a tertiary paediatric hospital in the UAE.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral palsy (CP) is associated with comorbidities affecting motor, cognitive, and sensory function, which may be present at various levels in different patients, across regions, or within the same region. The comorbidity burden and the range of comorbidities in children with CP may vary according to disease severity, perinatal factors, and access to healthcare services. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate comorbidities, functional limitations, and rehabilitation use in children with CP in a tertiary hospital in the UAE and compare findings with international data. METHODS: This retrospect

Molecular Subtypes and Ki-67 index in Breast Carcinoma with Special Emphasis on Triple Negative Breast Cancer. A 3-year Study in a Tertiary Care Center.

BACKGROUND: Birch allergy is one of the most common pollinosis in areas where exposure to high levels of birch pollen is common. Little is known about birch sensitivity in areas without birch pollen exposure and reactivity to birch-related species within the Fagales order. OBJECTIVE: the aim was to evaluate Fagales reactivity within a population not exposed to birch pollen using epidemiological, diagnostic, and laboratory approaches by means of extracts and allergenic molecules. METHODS: A cohort of 5335 respiratory allergic patients was screened by means of skin testing birch, hazel, and oa

Acute Cholecystitis: An Emerging Complication in Spinal Cord Injury Patients in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a significant medical condition associated with various secondary complications, including cholelithiasis. Cholelithiasis can cause biliary duct obstruction and result in acute cholecystitis. The development of acute cholecystitis in SCI patients has been well studied in the Taiwanese population, showing an increased risk of acute cholecystitis in patients with SCI. The development of cholecystitis has not been well studied in the United States. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review was performed on 3,939 propensity score-matched patients aged 1

Prevalence, Patterns, and Cost of Care for Children with Cerebral Palsy Enrolled in Medicaid Managed Care.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, many children with cerebral palsy (CP) obtain health care coverage through managed Medicaid, but little is known about the current demographics or management of this high-need, complex population. OBJECTIVE: To develop U.S. population-level information about the prevalence of CP, management patterns, and costs. METHODS: Data (2013-2015) were analyzed from a managed Medicaid database with coverage of children and adolescents in 15 states. Analyses included demographic information and use of 10 prespecified CP management options often used to manage spasticity

Psychological morbidity and chronic disease among adults with nontraumatic spinal cord injuries: a cohort study of privately insured beneficiaries.

BACKGROUND: Individuals living with a spinal cord injury (SCI) are at heightened risk for a number of chronic health conditions such as secondary comorbidities that may develop or be influenced by the injury, the presence of impairment, and/or the process of aging. However, very little is known about the development of secondary comorbidities among individuals living with nontraumatic SCIs (NTSCIs). PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to compare the prevalence of psychological morbidities and chronic diseases among adults with and without NTSCIs. DESIGN: Cross-sectional cohort from a na

Lentiform fork sign: a magnetic resonance finding in a case of acute metabolic acidosis.

We report a 33 year-old woman addicted to chronic unspecified solvents abuse with stupor, respiratory disorders, tetraplegia and severe metabolic acidosis. On admission an unenhanced cranial CT scan showed symmetrical hypodensities of both lentiform nuclei. MR imaging performed 12 hours after stupor demonstrates bilateral putaminal hemorrhagic necrosis, bilateral external capsule, corona radiata and deep cerebellar hyperintensities with right cingulate cortex involvement. DWI reflected bilateral putaminal hyperintensities with restricted water diffusion as to citotoxic edema and development of

A population-based study of communication impairment in cerebral palsy.

To explore factors associated with communication impairments in children with cerebral palsy. Data were obtained on children born between 1999 and 2008 from the Quebec Cerebral Palsy Registry (REPACQ). Out of 535 children with cerebral palsy, 297 were identified to have communication impairments (55.5%). Of these, 96 were unable to communicate verbally (32.3%), 195 had some verbal communication (65.7%), and 6 were unspecified (2.0%). These children were significantly more likely to have a more severe motor deficit (Gross Motor Function Classification System levels IV and V and Manual Ability C

Relationship between parental PODCI questionnaire and School Function Assessment in measuring performance in children with CP.

Little data exists assessing the relationship between functional limitations in children with cerebral palsy (CP) and their participation in everyday activities. This prospective study evaluates the relationship between the Pediatric Outcomes Data Collection Instrument (PODCI), a functional health-related quality of life instrument for children and their parents, and the School Function Assessment (SFA), a school-based functional assessment. One hundred and two children with CP (80.4% dipliegia; 10.8% hemiplegia; 3.9% triplegia; 2.0% quadriplegia; 2.9% unspecified; 60 males, 42 females, mean a

The Manual Ability Classification System (MACS) for children with cerebral palsy: scale development and evidence of validity and reliability.

The Manual Ability Classification System (MACS) has been developed to classify how children with cerebral palsy (CP) use their hands when handling objects in daily activities. The classification is designed to reflect the child's typical manual performance, not the child's maximal capacity. It classifies the collaborative use of both hands together. Validation was based on the experience within an expert group, a review of the literature, and thorough analysis of children across a spectrum of function. Discussions continued until consensus was reached, first about the constructs, then about th

[Critical review of the evaluation of the results of upper limb functional surgery in tetraplegia since 50 years].

OBJECTIVE: To study the methods of assessment of upper limb functional surgery in the literature. METHODS: The literature review relating to the years 1950-2002 was carried out with three data bases: Medline, Pascal, Embase. This review also involved a thorough study of non-indexed references. RESULTS: Although many instruments or tests are used to assess outcome after surgery, their reliability, validity and responsiveness have not been adequately proven. Methodology appears to be the major failing of the various scales used to assess these patients. The conceptual models underlying the eva

3-Methylglutaconic aciduria: ten new cases with a possible new phenotype.

3-Methylglutaconic aciduria is an organic aciduria with diverse phenotypic presentations. In more than half of the cases it is a 'neurologic or silent organic aciduria', and, except for one subtype, the biochemical defect is unknown. This report describes 10 new patients. Four of them presented with early global neurologic involvement and arrested development. They rapidly became demented, developed myoclonus or tonic-clonic seizures, spastic quadriplegia, deafness and blindness, and died. Three had acidosis and hypoglycemia neonatally; later, myoclonus and deafness, and eventually severe ment
