Alien Hand Syndrome Unveiled in a Patient With Right Middle Cerebral Artery Stroke.

Alien hand syndrome (AHS) is a rare but significant disorder, characterized by involuntary and often complex movements of one's hand. These movements seem to occur independently and unconsciously, separate from a person's intended actions.  We report a case of a 70-year-old male who presented to the emergency department with left sided hemiplegia following a stroke in the right middle cerebral artery (MCA) that affected the right temporal, parietal and internal capsule region. Upon additional inquiry, the patient reported experiencing involuntary, abrupt movements in his left upper and lower l

Influence of hyperbaric oxygen therapy-specialized care on limb motor function and mental state of cerebral infarction patients with hemiplegia.

BACKGROUND: Currently, cerebral infarction (CI) is mainly treated by emergency craniotomy or conservative treatment. However, some studies have questioned the functional recovery of patients after hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT)-specialized care. OBJECTIVE: This paper mainly explores the influence of HBOT-specialized care on limb motor function (LMF) and mental state of CI patients with hemiplegia. METHODS: The medical records of 113 CI patients with hemiplegia treated in our hospital from March 2020 to March 2022 were collected. Of these, 53 received routine care nursing (conventional grou

Efficacy of Lower Limb Orthoses in the Rehabilitation of Children Affected by Cerebral Palsy: A Systematic Review.

Lower limb orthoses are frequently used in children suffering from cerebral palsy (CP) alongside rehabilitation. The aim of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) and knee-ankle-foot orthosis (KAFO) in walking, balance maintenance, spasticity, and quality of life improvement during rehabilitation in children affected by CP. The hypothesis was that the use of orthoses could improve the parameters compared to non-use. A systematic review was conducted in the main databases, including English language RCTs published about the use of AFO and KAFO in combination or

Limb spasticity and telemedicine consultation for reconstructive surgery: patient perspectives of surgical assessment.

CONTEXT: Spasticity is characterized by increased muscle tone and stretch reflexes, often caused by an upper motor neuron (UMN) syndrome. Many patients live with their dysfunction of their upper or lower limbs for many years and are managed by a multidisciplinary team including physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists, neurologists, and/or physical therapists in an attempt to decrease their spasticity and enhance their quality of life. Reconstructive surgery is a treatment option for many patients living with spasticity. The goal of surgery is to permanently decrease their spastic tone

A Multistage Hemiplegic Lower-Limb Rehabilitation Robot: Design and Gait Trajectory Planning.

Most lower limb rehabilitation robots are limited to specific training postures to adapt to stroke patients in multiple stages of recovery. In addition, there is a lack of attention to the switching functions of the training side, including left, right, and bilateral, which enables patients with hemiplegia to rehabilitate with a single device. This article presents an exoskeleton robot named the multistage hemiplegic lower-limb rehabilitation robot, which has been designed to do rehabilitation in multiple training postures and training sides. The mechanism consisting of the thigh, calf, and fo

Functional Training for Lower Extremities in Stroke Survivors: A Scoping Review.

Engaging in meaningful and repetitive goal-oriented functional tasks can effectively enhance neuroplasticity and facilitate recovery following a stroke. This particular approach has primarily been studied in relation to functional outcomes and has predominantly focused on late subacute and chronic stroke patients. However, there is a lack of information regarding the standardized protocol of lower extremity functional training, its constituent elements, and its impact on motor recovery during the early subacute phase of stroke. The aim of this study was to examine the available evidence relate

Diagnostic uncertainty of steroid-modified Marburg's variant of multiple sclerosis even at autopsy: A case suggesting lymphoma and related myelin loss.

MS (multiple sclerosis) has specific criteria to avoid misdiagnosis. However, the Marburg variant of MS is so fulminant that initial axonal damage and other atypical observations have been allowed in past reports. We present a 74-year-old autopsy case with a vanishing tumor after steroids and radiation therapy, which was pathologically diagnosed as a Marburg variant with initial axonal loss. The case displayed radiological lymphoma-like observations: mass effects protruding to the lateral ventricle, fused extension from the choroid plexus to white matter with C opening sign, a growing lesion f
