Evaluation of the epidemiologic, clinical, radiologic, and treatment methods of patients with subacute and chronic meningitis.

BACKGROUND: Meningitis is known as a meningeal inflammation accompanied by pleocytosis in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and can be classified into acute, subacute, and chronic meningitis based on symptoms duration of ≤ 5 days, ≥ 5 days and ≥ 4 weeks, respectively. Subacute and chronic meningitis are caused mainly by indolent infectious agents and noninfectious causes such as autoimmune, and neoplastic. In this study, we investigated the characteristics, diagnosis, and treatment of subacute and chronic meningitis. METHODS: We extracted the medical records of patients with chronic and subacute

Ten-eleven translocation protein 1 modulates medulloblastoma progression.

BACKGROUND: Medulloblastoma (MB) is the most common malignant pediatric brain tumor that originates in the cerebellum and brainstem. Frequent somatic mutations and deregulated expression of epigenetic regulators in MB highlight the substantial role of epigenetic alterations. 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC) is a highly abundant cytosine modification in the developing cerebellum and is regulated by ten-eleven translocation (TET) enzymes. RESULTS: We investigate the alterations of 5hmC and TET enzymes in MB and their significance to cerebellar cancer formation. We show total abundance of 5hmC is

Aseptic meningitis and hydrocephalus secondary to neurosarcoidosis.

A 53-year-old woman presented to hospital with gait instability, urinary incontinence and confusion. She had a 4-month history of headache, blurred vision, personality change and memory problems. Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the brain after contrast application showed tectal plate and occipital enhancement, as well as a known hydrocephalus. Cerebrospinal fluid showed aseptic meningitis with no evidence of clonal expansion. After further imaging that showed generalised lymphadenopathy and subsequent tissue biopsy that showed granulomatous lymphadenitis, she was diagnosed with neurosarcoidosis.

IIIG9 inhibition in adult ependymal cells changes adherens junctions structure and induces cellular detachment.

Ependymal cells have multiple apical cilia that line the ventricular surfaces and the central canal of spinal cord. In cancer, the loss of ependymal cell polarity promotes the formation of different types of tumors, such as supratentorial anaplastic ependymomas, which are highly aggressive in children. IIIG9 (PPP1R32) is a protein restricted to adult ependymal cells located in cilia and in the apical cytoplasm and has unknown function. In this work, we studied the expression and localization of IIIG9 in the adherens junctions (cadherin/β-catenin-positive junctions) of adult brain ependymal cel

Ganglioglioma Arising from the Septum Pellucidum.

A 24-year-old gentleman presented to us with complaints of occasional headache for 2 years. Magnetic resonance imaging showed enhancing supra sellar mass with nonenhancing cystic components, extending superiorly up to the body of bilateral lateral ventricle, laterally displacing septum pellucidum, and compressing the third ventricle with obstructive hydrocephalus. Hormone profile depicted adrenocorticotropic hormone <5.00 pg/mL, growth hormone 1.32 ng/mL, insulin-like growth factor-1 <3.0 ng/mL. The patient underwent surgical resection. Histological finding was suggestive of ganglioglioma Worl

TRIM71 binds to IMP1 and is capable of positive and negative regulation of target RNAs.

TRIM71 is an important RNA-binding protein in development and disease, yet its direct targets have not been investigated globally. Here we describe a number of disease and developmentally-relevant TRIM71 RNA targets such as the MBNL family, LIN28B, MDM2, and TCF7L2. We describe a new role for TRIM71 as capable of positive or negative RNA regulation depending on the RNA target. We found that TRIM71 co-precipitated with IMP1 which could explain its multiple mechanisms of RNA regulation, as IMP1 is typically thought to stabilize RNAs. Deletion of the NHL domain of TRIM71 impacted its ability to b

Hydrocephalus in primary intradural spinal cord tumors: a systematic review of the literature in the pediatric population.

Hydrocephalus in children with primary intradural spinal cord tumors is exceedingly rare. Herewith, we performed a systematic literature review to address epidemiology, suggested pathophysiological mechanisms, prognostic factors, and treatment of such cases. We performed a systematic review with the best available evidence on cases of pediatric primary intradural tumors of the spinal cord presented with hydrocephalus. The patients were subjected to quantitative analysis on a basis of epidemiological features (age, sex, tumor type and location, clinical presentation, survival, dissemination). T

Gangliogliomas in the pediatric population.

BACKGROUND: Gangliogliomas are neoplastic lesions composed by a mixed population of neoplastic glial and dysplastic neural cells. They represent around 5% of all CNS tumors in the pediatric population. These usually are well-differentiated, slow-growing tumors, meaning that complete resection could cure most of these patients. Although most lesions remain stable over time after incomplete resection, some patients develop progression of the residual lesions: the optimal approach to treat these tumors is still to be defined. METHODS: This is a retrospective study in which we obtained data from

Intracranial calcifications in childhood: Part 1.

This article is the first of a two-part series on intracranial calcification in childhood. Intracranial calcification can be either physiological or pathological. Physiological intracranial calcification is not an expected neuroimaging finding in the neonatal or infantile period but occurs, as children grow older, in the pineal gland, habenula, choroid plexus and occasionally the dura mater. Pathological intracranial calcification can be broadly divided into infectious, congenital, endocrine/metabolic, vascular and neoplastic. The main goals in Part 1 are to discuss the chief differences betwe

Progression of Low-Grade Glioma During Pregnancy With Subsequent Regression Postpartum Without Treatment-A Case Report.

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: This report illustrates a case of a low-grade glioma that showed significant disease progression during pregnancy, and then subsequent regression spontaneously in the postpartum period without treatment. This is a rare case of spontaneous glioma regression in the postpartum period, and may suggest underlying mechanisms of hormonal influences upon glioma progression. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: The patient is a 27-yr-old female who underwent placement of a right-sided ventriculoperitoneal shunt for aqueductal stenosis at 8 wk of age. At the age of 24 yr, she was evaluated

Malignant transformation of neurocutaneous melanosis (NCM) following immunosuppression.

Neurocutaneous melanosis (NCM) is the condition of abnormal melanocyte deposition in the leptomeninges and brain parenchyma. Associated with congenital melanocytic nevi, NCM can result in neurologic deficits, hydrocephalus, and rarely, malignant transformation of cells. We present the case of a 16-year-old boy with NCM who developed malignant leptomeningeal melanoma following immunosuppression with a TNFα inhibitor. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of a patient with known NCM undergoing malignant transformation after anti-TNF therapy for inflammatory bowel disease.

Multimodality characteristics of multifocal choroid plexus carcinoma with bilateral calvarial defects in a dog.

An 8-year-old male intact miniature poodle presented for blindness, obtundation, tetraparesis, and vestibular signs. Magnetic resonance imaging, radiography, and ultrasound revealed a left piriform lobe lesion, right cerebellar and left brainstem lesions, and hydrocephalus and bilateral calvarial defects. Histopathology confirmed a choroid plexus carcinoma with meningeal and intraventricular metastases. The calvarial defect did not show evidence of necrosis, osteoclastic resorption, inflammation or neoplastic infiltration, reflecting a quiescent calvarial atrophy or dysplasia. These novel find

An update on the central nervous system manifestations of neurofibromatosis type 1.

Neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder that presents with variable phenotypes as a result of mutations in the neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) gene and subsequently, abnormal function of the protein product, neurofibromin. Patients with NF1 are at increased risk for central nervous system (CNS) manifestations including structural, functional, and neoplastic disease. The mechanisms underlying the varied manifestations of NF1 are incompletely understood, but the loss of functional neurofibromin, resulting in sustained activation of the oncoprotein RAS, is responsible f

Enhancing nodular lesions in Chiari II malformations in the setting of persistent hindbrain herniation: case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Chiari II malformation includes concomitant cerebellar tonsillar herniation, hydrocephalus, and myelomeningocele. Rarely, pediatric patients with persistent hindbrain herniation develop a new enhancing nodule at the cervicomedullary junction as adults. These new lesions may be suspicious for neoplastic growth, but it remains unclear if neurosurgical intervention is necessary. CASE REPORT: A 27-year-old female patient with history of Chiari II malformation and persistent hindbrain herniation presented with a 3-month history of headache and upper extremity weakness and numbness. A Case Report of Adult Pineoblastoma Occurring in a Pregnant Woman.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Pineoblastoma of the adult age is an uncommon tumor with only 200 cases reported. A standardized approach for an optimal adjuvant strategy is currently lacking. The case presented herein also deals with the issue of central nervous system tumors in pregnancy. CASE REPORT: A 21-year-old pregnant woman presented with massive hydrocephalus due to a mass in the pineal region detected with MRI. After positioning an urgent ventricular derivation, a cesarean section was performed. During a third ventriculocisternostomy, a biopsy revealed a pineoblastoma. After a maximal safe resectio
