Seeing through the veil: blue-light filtering and peak contrast sensitivity in pseudophakic patients.

PURPOSE: Atmospheric short-wave scattered light (blue haze) limits visual range by reducing the contrast of distant objects. While theoretical models and prior research suggest that filtering short wavelengths can improve visual range, significant individual differences persist in tolerance to veiling luminance, even among individuals with similar ocular health and acuity. This study examined whether a commercially available blue-light filtering (BLF) lens design could enhance visual range under simulated blue haze conditions in an older pseudophakic population. METHODS: Forty older pseudopha

Human vision maintains a rich representation of objects moving behind an occluder.

Vision may seem continuous, but it is frequently disrupted, by internal processes, such as blinks and fast eye-movements, and by external foreground clutter obscuring background objects. Yet when a bicycle passes behind a bush, we maintain a strong sense that it has not vanished, but persists, continuing its unseen motion. Using an indirect probe technique, we show that the visual system maintains, for at least 1 s, a rich perceptual representation of objects moving behind occluders. We created the impression of two disks moving behind a visible occluder, and after 1 s participants judged the

LoongTrack: Exploring long-sequence modeling for visual tracking.

Visual object tracking constitutes a complex online association problem, characterized by its intricate interplay of temporal and spatial dimensions. In the current mainstream pipeline, images are typically encoded into a sequence, which is subsequently processed and fused by a transformer. However, due to the quadratic complexity of transformers, they can only carefully design complex fusion modules to extract limited spatiotemporal cues, while neglecting the spatiotemporal information inherently provided by the video frames themselves. In this paper, rather than meticulously designing networ

Partially Different Mechanisms of Social and Nonsocial Attention: Evidence From Changes in Cueing Effects and Underlying Frontal Cortex Processing Over Time.

Gaze conveys important information about one's intentions and likely object of reference. Because processes of attention may change over time, for reasons including fatigue or experience, this study aimed to compare mechanisms of gaze and arrow cueing effects by measuring across sessions. On two separate occasions, 39 young adults underwent a cueing paradigm with valid or invalid gaze or arrow cues, as well as neutral cues. Activation in frontal cortex regions implicated in the dorsal and ventral attention networks was examined during task performance using functional near-infrared spectroscop

Baseline dynamics in human visual behaviour.

Humans perceive their visual environment by directing their eyes towards relevant objects. The deployment of visual attention depends substantially on stimulus properties, higher cognitive processes, and biases and constraints of the visual system. Numerous models describe human eye movements depending on the task or content. However, there is no universal, context-invariant model of human gaze behaviour. Here, we show that statistical regularities can be utilised to model human gaze behaviour regardless of task, observer, and stimulus. Using a context-agnostic eye movement model with a fixed

Revealing the speed of implied motion signals associated with viewing other people's gaze.

Recent evidence has shown that exposure to static images depicting an agent actively gazing at an object leads to a motion adaptation effect in the direction of the gaze, suggesting that the attention of others is encoded as an implied agent-to-object motion. We examined whether this motion signal is associated with a specific speed by presenting the same static image used in previous studies, followed by test probes with differing speeds of dot motion. A peak significant motion adaptation effect was found for dot motion with a speed of 1.4° s-1. The effect disappeared when the agent was blind

Exploring the visual system of the black grouse (Lyrurus tetrix): combining experimental and molecular approaches to inform strategies for reducing collisions.

Understanding the visual systems of birds can inform conservation efforts and mitigate the impact of collisions with human-made structures. Here, we investigated the visual abilities of the black grouse, Lyrurus tetrix (Galliformes: Phasianidae), a European mountain bird highly vulnerable to collisions with aerial infrastructures. We show that black grouse have wide monocular lateral visual fields, extensive binocular overlap and a minimal blind area behind the head, altogether indicating the ability to detect aerial objects from different fields of view. The spatial resolution and contrast se

Consistent nonlinear optical refractive index [Formula: see text] measurement of porcine crystalline lens and its surrounding in the 650-900 nm range.

The nonlinear optical properties of transparent ocular media have been shown to alter the focused intensity distribution of femtosecond laser pulses, potentially affecting the precision of laser ophthalmic surgery. In this study, the nonlinear refractive index [Formula: see text] of porcine aqueous humor, crystalline lens and vitreous humor was measured using two complementary techniques: the standard Z-scan-derived D4σ method and the phase-object imaging method. Both were performed with a tunable femtosecond laser source across the visible to near-infrared range (650-900 nm). All measured [Fo

Gaze patterns reveal attention-based modulation of lure discrimination.

The ability to differentiate highly overlapping stimuli or experiences in memory (and the behavioral lure discrimination outcomes that reflect this ability) has traditionally been studied as a mnemonic process. However, the contribution of goal-directed attentional processes, involved in a similar interference resolution function, has yet to be examined. Using eye-tracking, we first show that eye movements can be used as a sensitive measure of behavioral lure discrimination, based on performance on the widely used Mnemonic Similarity Task (Experiment 1). We then show in three separate experime

Mirror-image inversion in commonly used compound microscopes.

Optical microscopes are essential tools for magnifying and analysing a wide range of samples and are generally expected to faithfully preserve the original object in all its dimensions. However, depending on the optical design and software pipeline, many commonly used systems silently generate mirror-reversed images. This transformation alters handedness and therefore the three-dimensional (3D) structure of the object, unlike the simple 180° image rotation produced by lenses. We show that mirror inversion arises whenever the emission or detection path contains an odd number of reflective eleme

Relationship of Atropine in Controlling Myopia Progression Among Pediatric Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

PURPOSE: Myopia is a refractive error where light focuses in front of the retina, causing blurred distance vision. It is linked to complications such as macular degeneration, retinal detachment, glaucoma, and cataracts, potentially resulting in irreversible vision loss. Controlling myopia progression is critical to reduce long-term impairment. This systematic review evaluate and compare different atropine concentrations for slowing myopia progression in pediatric patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A comprehensive electronic search was conducted in PubMed, Google Scholar, Embase, and the Cochrane

Automated Detection and Assessment of Post-Operative Eyelid Outcome in Trachomatous Trichiasis Surgery.

Trachomatous trichiasis (TT) is an ocular condition in which the eyelid turns inward causing the eyelashes to scratch the eye, leading to blindness and affecting millions of people worldwide. The standard treatment for TT is surgery, where an incision is made to rotate the eyelid margin outward, repositioning the eyelashes to their original position. However, outcomes after surgery are often suboptimal, with a high risk of post-operative trichiasis (PTT). Studies have shown that the appearance of the immediate post-operative eyelid strongly correlates with the success of the procedure after si

An owl-inspired temporal transformer for enhanced shrimp detection in aquatic environments.

This study introduces NOCT-A-VIS, which stands for Nocturnal Adaptive Vision System, symbolizing a bio-inspired framework that mimics owl-like visual adaptations for detecting underwater objects in low-light environments. From the methodological point of view, the physical characteristics of owls' vision from the NOCT-A-VIS framework are incorporated as dedicated computational modules. The proposed shrimp detection transformer analyzes light reflection to emulate the function of the Tapetum Lucidum (TL), which is a deep reflect part of retina exists in owls, improves the visual capability to v

The effects of fatigue on the relation between ocular pursuit and interceptive performance in soccer experts.

Accuracy and duration of ocular pursuit of a target object have been linked to interceptive performance. Yet, previous assessments have not examined this relationship in the context of fatigue. We assessed the relationship between ocular pursuit and interceptive performance under peripheral and central + peripheral fatigue conditions. We determined ventilatory thresholds in n = 17 soccer experts using a ramp incremental protocol to individually tailor 45 minutes of cycling in the heavy exercise domain. Throughout the central + peripheral fatigue exercise, participants completed a modified Stro

Things are looking (farther) up: Upward gaze orientation is overestimated.

In the current work, we examine upward head orientation. Previous work has shown that downward gaze orientation is overestimated by a factor of ~1.5, while azimuth gaze orientation is overestimated by a factor of ~1.2. In Experiment 1, we compared head orientation in the upward, downward, and azimuth (leftward and rightward) directions. The factor by which observers overestimated upward head orientation was 1.56, similar to overestimates in downward head orientation in this and downward gaze orientation in previous work. Azimuth gaze orientation was overestimated by ~1.26, similar to previous

Moment-to-Moment Coordination of Parent-Infant Visual Attention: An Actor-Partner Interdependence Framework Within Dynamic Structural Equation Modeling.

Coordination of caregivers' (N = 50, five fathers and 45 mothers) and 9-month-old infants' (15 girls, 34 boys, one not reported) gaze during naturalistic play with a puzzle and activity board was examined using the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model within a Dynamic Structural Equation Modeling framework. This approach allows for the simultaneous estimation of each partner's effect on their own subsequent looking and on their partner's subsequent looking. Analysis of gaze data from head-mounted eye trackers worn by North American, middle-class, racially and ethnically diverse caregivers and i

Individual and ensemble perception in naturalistic scenes: Effects of context and presentation time.

In many everyday tasks, we must identify both single objects, as well as object ensembles. Our understanding of the mechanisms behind individual and ensemble perception comes mainly from studies conducted under very simplistic conditions. Here, we aim to further this understanding by moving toward more naturalistic environments. We tested the influence of scene context and presentation time on individual and ensemble perception. Six kitchen objects were presented in two scene contexts, either a kitchen scene or in front of a texturized background for one of three presentation times (100, 800,

When, where, and for how long: What drives gaze behavior during goal-directed motor action?

Vision typically plays a vital role in our ability to navigate through a cluttered world, negotiate varying terrain, and interact with objects and other individuals. Our understanding of what determines how people decide where, when, and for how long to direct gaze to guide their motor behaviors continues to evolve. This narrative review first summarizes the behavioral evidence for a core assumption about these decisions: gaze behavior serves to reduce task-relevant uncertainty of environmental features and the decision landscape. Next, it expands on this simplistic viewpoint by capitalizing o

Peripheral scene context modulates task-driven saccades toward peripheral objects.

Peripheral vision plays a crucial role in visual recognition, with previous studies suggesting that cognitive predictions derived from peripheral input enhance object categorization in central vision during single eye-fixation. However, visual perception is dynamic, alternating between ocular fixations and saccades to new objects of interest. In three eye-tracking experiments, we explored how task-relevant predictions extracted from the peripheral scene context influence the gaze-based discrimination of target objects in peripheral vision. We presented both an object and a scene in peripheral
