Dupilumab-associated ocular surface disease (DAOSD) is one of the most common adverse events associated with dupilumab (an anti-interleukin-4-receptor-alpha monoclonal antibody) during the treatment of patients with atopic dermatitis (AD). However, it rarely occurs in patients with bronchial asthma or chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps. Adequate understanding of DAOSD is important for proper diagnosis and appropriate ophthalmic intervention. The aim of this review was to summarize and discuss the clinical characteristics and management of DAOSD in Japan. The pathogenesis of DAOSD can be

Pediatric blepharokeratoconjunctivitis (PBKC) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the ocular surface that affects the eyelids, conjunctiva, and cornea that can lead to corneal scarring and permanent vision loss if untreated. The condition presents with diverse clinical features, necessitating a broad range of therapeutic approaches. Current management strategies include eyelid hygiene practices, topical and systemic antibiotics, and anti-inflammatory agents, often in combination for optimal outcomes. Given the expanding spectrum of medical options and the emergence of new therapeutic avenue

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) is a rare but potentially life- threatening condition caused by exfoliative toxin-producing Staphylococcus aureus. Ocular involvement, although infrequently reported, may lead to vision-threatening complications if not promptly recognized.
METHODS: The clinical history, findings, therapy, and outcome of two patients with SSSS exhibiting prominent ocular manifestations at disease onset were analyzed and reported. A comprehensive literature review was performed using PubMed/Medline, Embase, and Scopus incorporating search terms such as "St

Mucus Fishing Syndrome (MFS) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the ocular surface characterized by repeated mechanical removal of mucus strands, leading to a cycle of irritation and excess mucus production. MFS is often associated with dry eye disease, meibomian gland dysfunction, blepharitis, and allergic conjunctivitis. Patients typically present with conjunctival hyperemia, irritation, and mucus accumulation. We describe two clinical cases of MFS in which low-level light therapy (LLLT) was used as part of a multimodal management approach. The first case involved a 32-year-old woman wit

Phthiriasis palpebrarum is a rare infestation of the eyelids caused by Phthirus pubis. This condition is particularly noteworthy as it is a rare cause of red eyes in children and can often be confused with other forms of blepharoconjunctivitis. In this study, we examined an 11-year-old male patient who was brought to our clinic by his family and presented with redness and itching in both eyes that had persisted for a month. Biomicroscopic examination revealed two live lice with mobile legs and a semi-transparent appearance on the eyelashes of both upper eyelids, together with a large number of

PURPOSE: Prospective trials show that Chlamydia psittaci (Cp) eradication with doxycycline is followed by lymphoma regression in 2-thirds of patients with ocular adnexal marginal zone lymphoma (OAMZL). Postponing orbit irradiation, a standard treatment for OAMZL, while waiting for the tumor response to antibiotic, could raise concern. Herein, we report the safety and efficacy of salvage radiation therapy in patients with OAMZL relapsed after or refractory to Cp eradication.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Patients with stage IEA OAMZL diagnosed at our institution between 2005 and 2023 were evaluated f

BACKGROUND: In children, necrotizing pneumonia (NP) is an uncommon, severe complication of pneumonia. It is characterized by destruction of the underlying lung parenchyma resulting in multiple small, thin-walled cavities and is often accompanied by empyema and bronchopleural fistulae.
REVIEW: NP in children was first reported in children in 1994, and since then there has been a gradual increase in cases, which is partially explained by greater physician awareness and use of contrast computed tomography (CT) scans, and by temporal changes in circulating respiratory pathogens and antibiotic pre

UNLABELLED: Clevidipine (Cleviprex), a late-generation dihydropyridine calcium channel antagonist available as a lipid emulsion for intravenous infusion, is approved in the US for the reduction of blood pressure (BP) when oral therapy is not feasible or desirable. Intravenous clevidipine is effective in the treatment of both acute preoperative and postoperative hypertension in adult cardiac surgery patients, and with a rapid onset and short duration of action the drug can be easily titrated for predictable BP control. Moreover, in terms of controlling acutely elevated BP in this patient popula

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that can lead to significant physical and psychologic distress for patients. Psoriatic arthritis (PsA), originally thought to be quite a mild disorder, is now recognized as a progressive and destructive arthritis. To date, therapies for both these conditions have been non-specific and unable to maintain long-lasting remission. In addition, many of the current therapies have significant adverse effects, limiting their usefulness. However, elucidation of the pathogenesis of psoriasis and PsA at a molecular level and the development of selective bi

A chalazion is one of the most common eye conditions presenting as a mass lesion of the eyelids. It is seen in all age groups. Chalazion is a non-inflammatory process and develops due to retained secretion of the meibomian or Zeis glands. Treatment of choice differs among clinicians and may include application of warm compress onto eyelids, lid hygiene, using local antibiotic ointment with or without steroids, injecting steroid solution (triamcinolone acetonide) into the lesion and surgical removal of the lesion by incision and curettage. In addition, there are some other experimented methods

Sulfur mustard (SM), a bi-functional alkylating agent, was used during World War I and the Iran-Iraq war. SM toxicity is ten times higher in eyes than in other tissues. Cornea is exceptionally susceptible to SM-injuries due to its anterior positioning and mucous-aqueous interphase. Ocular SM exposure induces blepharitis, photosensitivity, dry eye, epithelial defects, limbal ischemia and stem cell deficiency, and mustard gas keratopathy leading to temporary or permanent vision impairments. We demonstrated that dexamethasone (Dex) is a potent therapeutic intervention against SM-induced corneal i
