We report a rare case of a delayed inflammatory reaction associated with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination resulting in polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) sheet exposure and lagophthalmos. A 61-year-old man had undergone bilateral frontalis suspension with PTFE sheets for blepharoptosis 3 years earlier. After multiple doses of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines (Moderna and Pfizer), the patient developed progressive eyelid swelling, redness, and subsequent exposure of the PTFE sheets in the sub-eyebrow area. Surgical removal of the PTFE material created a skin defect, which was reconstructed usi

Reconstruction of full-thickness lower eyelid defects remains a complex challenge due to the simultaneous requirements of functional protection, dynamic closure, and aesthetic harmony. Various local and free flaps exist, but limitations such as donor-site morbidity, bulkiness, or poor color match persist. To our knowledge, based on a structured literature search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science (database inception to November 2025), there are no previously published reports describing the use of the first dorsal metacarpal artery (FDMA) flap as a free flap for reconstruction of lower eyel

PURPOSE: Facial nerve paralysis (FNP) may result in a range of ocular sequelae. Lower eyelid retraction and paralytic ectropion due to FNP contributes to lagophthalmos and sight-threatening exposure keratopathy. The pathophysiology of lower eyelid retraction secondary to FNP involves lateral canthal tendon laxity, middle lamella defect, and malar descent. The aim of this study is to describe a series of patients with FNP whose lid retraction was treated with a combined dermis spacer graft, lateral canthopexy and subperiosteal midface lifting.
METHODS: The study design was a retrospective non-

Pugs are highly predisposed to corneal disorders, such as brachycephalic ocular syndrome (BOS), due to their disproportionate skull, reduced corneal sensitivity and eyelid anomalies such as distichiasis, entropion and lagophthalmos. The risk of corneal disorders which cause significant suffering is substantial, prompting calls for international efforts to reduce their prevalence. While these debilitating conditions are also likely to be common in pugs in Australia, their prevalence and risk factors have not been reported. The anonymised electronic patient records (EPRs) of 1318 pugs attending

Reconstruction of facial paralysis requires the restoration of both functional and aesthetic aspects while considering a satisfactory quality of life. The periorbital region in particular poses major challenges. The main symptoms of the periorbital region include increased tearing, lagophthalmos, recurrent keratoconjunctivitis, asymmetry and inability to blink spontaneously. Diagnostics as well as therapy must be carried out in an interdisciplinary setting. Conservative treatment is initiated immediately after occurrence of symptoms. The indication for surgical therapy depends on the etiology,

Ocular surface disease (OSD) encompasses a range of conditions that not only include the well-described dry eye disease (DED) components - such as hyperosmolarity, inflammation, ocular surface damage, and neurosensory compromise - but also eyelid-related disorders. These can stem from anatomical abnormalities or as consequences of DED, leading to various mechanical and inflammatory issues. These may include friction between the eyelids and the globe; irregular blink mechanics; and incomplete protection or even frank exposure of the ocular surface. Ramsay Hunt syndrome (RHS) is a rare complication of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) reactivation, typically presenting with a combination of painful vesicular lesions in the ear, facial nerve palsy, and hearing loss. Early diagnosis and antiviral therapy are critical in minimizing long-term sequelae, such as persistent facial weakness and hearing impairment. This case highlights the importance of prompt recognition and treatment in older patients, particularly those with pre-existing hearing difficulties. An 87-year-old female presented with a 2-week history of painful, blister-like lesions on t

BACKGROUND: Leprosy is an infectious neglected tropical disease that can result in chronic immune mediated nerve damage. When this involves the facial nerve, this can lead to lagophthalmos, with the later stages requiring surgical correction. If untreated lagophthalmos can cause keratopathies leading to visual impairment and eventual blindness. However, to date no paper has systematically reviewed the surgical management of lagophthalmos in those affected by leprosy.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted on the 16/11/2024 with data from PubMed, Infolep, Web of Sciences Core Collection an

Ten-year-old female patient, with facial dysmorphia, scoliosis, short stature, muscular hypotonia, patent foramen ovale and maturational delay, presented for correction of bilateral congenital ectropion. Ophthalmological examination revealed bilateral lower eyelid ectropion, euryblepharon and lagophthalmos, with a positive Bell's phenomenon. She was treated with full-thickness autologous skin grafts on the lower eyelids with bilateral lateral canthoplasty, resolving the ectropion and improving eyelid occlusion. Subsequently, a genetic study was performed that revealed a mutation in the PTPN11

Inclusion body myositis is a common type of inflammatory myopathy among populations over the age of 50 years, classically presenting with weakness and atrophy of the forearms and quadriceps. While a third of patients may eventually present with mild facial weakness, findings of ptosis, facial palsy, or involvement of extraocular muscles are rarely, if ever, seen. The authors describe a unique case of inclusion body myositis in which a patient initially presented with bilateral severe facial palsy and exposure keratitis but minimal limb weakness. While midface weakness, unilateral lagophthalmos

BACKGROUND: Reconstructing full-thickness defects involving 50% to 75% of the horizontal length of the lower eyelid after medial and central full-thickness block resection can be challenging. As a disadvanatge, 1-stage reconstructions may require a free graft reconstruction of the posterior lamella. In addition, 2-stage reconstructions are associated with several complications, including erythema, and the eye must be temporarily closed after surgery.
METHODS: The present study describes a single-surgeon retrospective case series. Five patients diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma underwent wid

BACKGROUND Congenital eyelid coloboma in children often faces complications such as keratitis, symblepharon, and amblyopia. Repairing defects involving at least 50% of the eyelid margin can be challenging. Acellular dermal allograft (ADA) has achieved excellent results as a substitute in adult eye plastic surgery, with minimal morbidity. This report describes a case of reconstruction of an eyelid defect in a 7-month-old male infant using an ADA. CASE REPORT A 7-month-old male infant was referred due to congenital eyelid coloboma in the left eye, which affected nearly one-half of the upper and
