Clinical gastroenterology and hepatology : the official clinical practice journal of the American Gastroenterological Association2020eng
BACKGROUND & AIMS: Campylobacter is the leading cause of bacterial gastroenteritis in the United States. We investigated the prevalence of postinfection irritable bowel syndrome (PI-IBS) in a cohort with culture-confirmed Campylobacter cases; risk factors for PI-IBS based on clinical factors; and shifts in IBS patterns postinfection in patients with pre-existing IBS.
METHODS: The Minnesota Department of Health collects data on symptoms and exposures upon notification of Campylobacter cases. From 2011 through 2019, we sent surveys (the Rome III and IBS symptom severity surveys) to 3586 patient

BACKGROUND: Campylobacter enteritis is the major cause of bacterial gastroenteritis worldwide. In recent years, there has been a rise in global incidence of campylobacteriosis. There are no available data on prevalence of Campylobacter diarrhoea from Northeast India.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study investigated archival stool samples collected between 2014 and 2016 from two hospitals of Northeast India. A total of 407 archival stool samples from cases of diarrhoea under 5 years of age were screened for Campylobacter spp. using commercial probe-based real-time polymerase chain reaction assay.

Campylobacter enteritis in humans is primarily associated with C. jejuni/coli infection. Other species cause campylobacteriosis relatively infrequently; while this could be attributed to bias in diagnostic methods, the pathogenicity of non-jejuni/coli Campylobacter spp. such as C. upsaliensis and C. helveticus (isolated from dogs and cats) is uncertain. Galleria mellonella larvae are suitable models of the mammalian innate immune system and have been applied to C. jejuni studies. This study compared the pathogenicity of C. jejuni, C. upsaliensis, and C. helveticus isolates. Larvae inoculated w

Primary campylobacter enteritis with secondary bacteremia was diagnosed in an immunocompromised patient with stage IV gliosarcoma. She developed mild diarrhea followed by systemic symptoms with transient generalized weakness and fever. She was treated with azithromycin and had a full recovery and without relapse through 2 months of follow-up. Her diagnosis was confirmed by a positive stool culture for Campylobacter sp. and blood culture for Campylobacter jejuni/coli.

BACKGROUND: There are few reports of patients with Campylobacter enteritis after renal transplantation, and only a few case reports of bacteremia have been published. Although antibiotic therapy for 3-5 days has been recommended for immunocompromised patients, the optimal treatment for Campylobacter enteritis after renal transplantation has not been established. This study aimed to clarify the clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of Campylobacter enteritis after pediatric renal transplantation.
METHODS: This retrospective study included patients who underwent pediatric renal transp

BACKGROUND: Campylobacter infections are typically self-limited, but in cases with severe enteritis, immuno-compromised system and bacteremia, an appropriate antimicrobial treatment is demanding. Our study aim was to determine the isolation rate of Campylobacter among patients with acute enteritis in the capital of North Macedonia and its antimicrobial susceptibility.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total number of 3820 patients clinically diagnosed as acute enteritis, were included in the study. Stool samples were collected and Campylobacter was isolated and identified by classical microbiological m

PURPOSE: Timely antibiotic therapy in selected cases of diarrhea associated with bacterial infections can reduce the duration and severity of illness and prevent complications. The availability of a predictive index before identification of causative bacteria would aid in the choice of a therapeutic agent.
METHODS: The study included patients admitted to the pediatrics unit at Konyang University Hospital for acute inflammatory diarrhea from August 1, 2015 to July 31, 2016 who underwent multiplex polymerase chain reaction testing. Of 248 patients, 83 had positive results. The clinical symptoms

Campylobacter enteritis is the most frequent bacterial enteritis including in children. Its diagnosis suffers from the lack of sensitivity and delayed result of culture. Our aim was to test a new PCR-derived method for Campylobacter diagnosis in comparison to a composite reference. Patients presenting to the emergency ward of our hospital with enteric symptoms during the 2016 summer season were included. In addition to culture, an ELISA and an in-house real-time PCR were performed, as well as the new method (Orion GenRead Campylobacter) on all stool specimens. The composite reference used to c

INTRODUCTION: In Europe, the number of cases of Campylobacter enteritis and their quinolone resistance is increasing. The aims of this work were to evaluate: (1) the hospital epidemiology of bacterial enteritis between 2010 and 2015. (2) The proportion of Campylobacter and Salmonella enteritis. (3) Resistance to quinolones in adult and paediatric populations. (4) To investigate possible regional epidemiological and bacteriological disparities.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This is a multicentric study carried out in 21 general hospitals (CHG) representing 14 French regions with a prospective collecti

Campylobacter spp. are among the most commonly diagnosed causes of human infection. Methods for detection of the 29 campylobacter species have mainly focused on cultivation of the thermophilic species. More than 99% of clinical campylobacter isolates notified in the UK in the recent past have been from faecal samples and associated with gastroenteritis. Campylobacter enteritis notifications in temperate zones show a seasonal increase during the summer months with a sharp decrease in the winter months, a pattern which remains incompletely understood. The striking seasonality in the expression o

PURPOSE: Campylobacter species are a well-recognized but rare cause of bloodstream infection.
METHODS: Here we reviewed 41 cases of Campylobacter bloodstream infection occurring at a single center in London over 44years, comprising 0.2% of all recorded episodes during this time period.
RESULTS: Patients had a mean age of 46years and, contrasting with previous reports, nearly 50% of our patients did not have significant comorbidities. Ciprofloxacin resistance increased over the study period with 35% of isolates overall being resistant compared with only 3% exhibiting macrolide resistance. Des

Campylobacter enteritis in humans is primarily associated with C. jejuni/coli infection. The impact of other Campylobacter spp. is likely to be underestimated due to the bias of culture methods towards Campylobacter jejuni/coli diagnosis. Stool antigen tests are becoming increasingly popular and appear generally less species-specific. A review of independent studies of the ProSpecT® Campylobacter Microplate enzyme immunoassay (EIA) developed for C. jejuni/coli showed comparable diagnostic results to culture methods but the examination of non-jejuni/coli Campylobacter spp. was limited and the l

Consumption of foods containing chicken liver has been associated with Campylobacter enteritis. Campylobacters can contaminate the surface of livers post-mortem but can also arise through systemic infection of colonising bacteria in live birds. The use of bacteriophage to reduce levels of Campylobacter entering the food chain is a promising intervention approach but most phages have been isolated from chicken excreta. This study examined the incidence and contamination levels of Campylobacter and their bacteriophage in UK retail chicken liver. Using enrichment procedures, 87% of 109 chicken li

Metabolic Dysfunction Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) and its progressive form, Metabolic Dysfunction Associated Steatohepatitis (MASH), represent significant health concerns associated with the metabolic syndrome. These conditions are characterized by excessive hepatic fat accumulation, inflammation, and potential progression to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Neutrophils are innate immune cells that play a pivotal role in the development of MASLD and MASH. They can infiltrate the hepatic microenvironment in response to inflammatory cytokines and damage associated molecular

Post-infectious sequelea such as Guillain Barré syndrome (GBS), reactive arthritis (RA), and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) may arise as a consequence of acute Campylobacter-enteritis (AE). However, reliable seroprevalence data of Campylobacter-associated sequelae has not been established. The objectives of this study were, first, to identify the most specific and sensitive test antigen in an optimized ELISA assay for diagnosing a previous Campylobacter-infection and, second, to compare the prevalence of anti-Campylobacter antibodies in cohorts of healthy blood donors (BD), AE, GBS, RA, and

A 25-year-old man was admitted with the chief complaints of right flank pain, watery diarrhea, and fever. Blood tests revealed high levels of inflammatory markers, and infectious enteritis was diagnosed. A stool culture obtained on admission revealed no growth of any significant pathogens. Conservative therapy was undertaken with fasting and fluid replacement. On day 2 of admission, the fever resolved, the frequency of defecation reduced, the right flank pain began to subside, and the white blood cell count started to decrease. On hospital day 4, the frequency of diarrhea decreased to approxim

Campylobacter species are the leading cause of acute bacterial diarrhea in industrialized countries. However, bacteremia is detected in <1% of patients with Campylobacter enteritis and is most likely to occur in patients who are immunocompromised or of older age. To our knowledge, only 2 cases of Campylobacter jejuni bacteremia have been reported in renal transplant recipients (RTRs). We present a case of an RTR with C. jejuni bacteremia presenting as self-limiting diarrhea followed by fever and cellulitis. The patient was successfully treated with a 2-week course of imipenem and developed no

An outbreak of acute gastroenteritis involving 249 persons, 32% of whom were hospitalized, occurred on a U.S. Army installation in 1990. Campylobacter jejuni was isolated from 81 of 163 (50%) persons cultured. Seventeen isolates of C. jejuni available for serotyping were Lior serotype 5. The outbreak remained restricted to one recruit barracks area and adjacent Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps cadet barracks. Infection of sequential cohorts of recruits over an interval of 3 weeks suggested a continuing or intermittent common source. Contaminated food was not implicated because affected pe
