BACKGROUND Lupus miliaris disseminatus faciei (LMDF) is a rare idiopathic granulomatous dermatosis that presents as discrete yellow-brown, erythematous, or skin-colored papules on the central face, with a recognized preference for the eyelids and periorbital region. CASE REPORT We report a case of isolated bilateral periocular LMDF in a healthy young adult man whose initial eyelid biopsy revealed suppurative necrotizing granulomatous inflammation, raising histopathological concern for granulomatosis with polyangiitis and other systemic granulomatous diseases. Autoimmune, vasculitic, infectious

UNLABELLED: Thyroid diseases lead to significant systemic changes in bone tissue, but analysis and densitometric assessment in this pathology is usually limited to the lumbar vertebrae and the femoral and radial bones. At the same time, there are grounds to assume presence of significant changes in other bony structures, primarily the orbit. To date, no data are available on specific changes in the mineral composition of orbital bones in thyroid pathology.
OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the mineral composition of the bone tissue of the lateral orbital wall in thyroid eye disease (TED) using s

Thyroid eye disease (TED) is an autoimmune inflammatory orbitopathy that can threaten vision in severe cases due to dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON). While TED is primarily diagnosed clinically, orbital imaging with computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays a pivotal role in confirming the diagnosis in atypical presentations, distinguishing TED from other orbital diseases, assessing disease activity, and guiding management. This narrative review examines the role of CT and MRI in the diagnosis and management of TED, with particular focus on their application in diffe

INTRODUCTION: Alemtuzumab treatment for multiple sclerosis frequently induces Graves' disease (GD), characterized by common coexistence of stimulating and blocking anti-thyrotropin receptor autoantibodies (TRAb), causing fluctuations of thyroid function. Alemtuzumab-induced TRAb-positive hypothyroidism is also common. These conditions are challenging to manage during pregnancy, considering the imperative necessity to maintain euthyroidism to minimize risks for both pregnancy and fetal/neonatal outcomes.
METHODS: We reviewed the clinical course and therapeutic management of four pregnant women

Acetaminophen (APAP) is the most widely used analgesic during pregnancy, yet its effects on prenatal human brain development remain incompletely understood. Epidemiological studies have reported inconsistent associations between prenatal APAP exposure and later neurodevelopmental outcomes, underscoring the need for mechanistic evaluation in human-relevant developmental models. Here, we examined how APAP influences early cortical development using induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cortical organoids (COs) generated from six independent lines. Organoids were exposed to physiologically releva

OBJECTIVE: Graves' disease (GD) is an autoimmune thyroid disease, mainly affecting women of working age. The hyperthyroidism in GD is characterised by physical symptoms (tachycardia, weight loss, sweating and tremors) as well as cognitive and psychological problems that have a major impact on the daily lives of patients. Mental symptoms are particularly distressing, with patients expressing a desire for more communication and support for the mental aspects of their care. The aim of this study was to explore the experience of healthcare professionals (HCPs) when providing care and treatment to

Autoimmune diseases are a heterogeneous group of chronic diseases characterised by loss of immune tolerance with substantial morbidity and mortality. Since 2021, chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells have recently emerged as a promising treatment option for patients with severe, refractory autoimmune diseases. In 2024, an international expert panel from the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT), the International Society for Cell and Gene Therapy (ISCT), and the Joint Accreditation Committee of ISCT and EBMT (JACIE) released the first best-practice recommendations on C

BACKGROUND: A lower rate of permanent pacemaker (PPM) has been linked to a target aortic implantation height (AIH) >0.70, following transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) with the SAPIEN 3 valve. Based on clinical experience, it was hypothesized that a higher AIH (≥0.85) would lower the rate of PPM implantation.
METHODS: A total of 127 patients (66 females, 61 males; mean age 82 ± 8 years) underwent TAVR with the SAPIEN 3 valve between May 2015 and July 2016. AIH was defined as the proportion of the valve frame above the aortic annulus in the post-deployment aortogram. A target AIH (≥0

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to compare disease burden and psychosocial outcomes between patients with GD in childhood/young adulthood and an unexposed population cohort.
METHODS: This cohort study used prospectively collected data from medical records and multiple Swedish registers. Patients diagnosed with GD aged <21 years (n=87, of whom 55 were <18 years) in 2003-2005 were included. Each patient was matched with 10 individuals without GD.
RESULTS: Over the 17-year follow-up (median: 15.5 years), patients with GD had significantly higher recorded rates of 'endocrine, nutritional, and metabolic dise

AIMS: The study aims to investigate the impact of curcumin on the structure of betaamyloid peptide dimers and how carbon nanotubes influence this interaction. The research focuses on understanding the molecular dynamics and structural changes induced by curcumin to reduce beta-amyloid toxicity. Curcumin, a phenolic compound, is known for its ability to prevent the aggregation of beta-amyloid peptides, which are associated with neurodegenerative diseases. Despite its recognized inhibitory action on beta-amyloid aggregation, there is limited understanding of its precise effects on the peptide's

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) could lead to intracranial hemorrhage (ICH), which has now been identified as a major cause of death after trauma if it is not adequately diagnosed and properly treated within the first 24 hours. CT examination is widely preferred for urgent ICH diagnosis, which enables the fast identification and detection of ICH regions. However, the use of it requires the clinical interpretation by experts to identify the subtypes of ICH. Besides, it is unable to provide the details needed to conduct quantitative assessment, such as the volume and thickness of hemorrhagic lesion

INTRODUCTION: The demographic development in Germany, especially in Saxony-Anhalt (SA), also poses challenges for vascular surgery, as the incidence of vascular diseases has increased following demographic change. For example, the prevalence of peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) in industrialised countries is estimated at around 10-20% in people over 60 years of age; thus, the number of people affected will also increase here with demographic change. Especially in rural areas, it seems to be more difficult for patients to reach appropriate specialist treatment.

Dermoid cysts are a variation of teratoma made up of ectoderm and mesoderm and represent a large proportion of scalp and skull masses found in children. Orbital dermoid cysts are an exceedingly rare form of primary orbital tumors. We present a case of a 25-year-old active duty male presenting with new onset migraines, eye pain on waking, and intermittent blurred vision. According to current clinical practice guidelines, intracranial imaging was obtained, which revealed an orbital mass. The mass was successfully excised, and surgical pathology confirmed the diagnosis of an orbital dermoid cyst.

Treatment of Graves' disease (GD) is complex and controversial. Conventional therapy of GD includes antithyroid drugs (ATDs), surgery, and radio-iodine therapy (RIT) and each has limitations. ATDs are associated with high rates of relapse and side effects. Definitive therapies result in permanent hypothyroidism and increased risk of Graves' ophthalmopathy. With advancements in the understanding of precise autoimmune mechanisms causing GD, novel therapies targeting immune pathways are in the pipeline of development. Newer drugs switch off a part of the immune system that is causing the disease,
