BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Eye infection with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) can result in keratitis, a leading cause of corneal blindness. We evaluated whether an experimental vaccine containing HSV-2 immunogens to prevent genital herpes also protects against HSV-1 eye infection and neuroinvasion.
METHODS: Mice were immunized twice, one month apart, with PBS or a nucleoside-modified lipid nanoparticle vaccine containing mRNA encoding for gC2, gD2, and gE2. One month later, 106 plaque forming units (PFU) (10 lethal dose 50, LD50) of the HSV-1 McKrae strain were added to the intact cornea of

Myxomatosis is a severe viral disease of lagomorphs that has recently seen the emergence of a recombinant myxoma virus (MYXV). Data from Africa remain scarce. Here we report the first confirmed detection and genomic characterization of a recombinant MYXV in Algeria. Two domestic rabbits from a backyard smallholding in El Affroun (Blida province) were presented on 19 October 2022 with classical signs of myxomatosis, including marked facial edema, severe mucopurulent blepharoconjunctivitis, and respiratory involvement. Necropsy and histopathology showed lesions typical of myxomatosis (epithelial

Ocular allergy encompasses a heterogeneous group of diseases with overlapping clinical features and complex immunopathological mechanisms. This often creates challenges in classification and, consequently, in optimizing patient management. The nomenclature published in 2023 by the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) addresses these issues by redefining these conditions and linking clinical phenotypes and environmental modifiers to underlying types of hypersensitivity. This framework enhances diagnostic precision and supports mechanism-guided management. This article app

With several international outbreaks ongoing, mpox-related eye disease is increasingly detected, yet data on its prevalence remain limited. We conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study in four health zones in South-Kivu Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo, between November 1, 2024 and January 31, 2025, to describe the clinical features of mpox-related ophthalmic disease in hospitalized patients during the ongoing clade Ib outbreak. Routine ophthalmic examination was performed in laboratory-confirmed hospitalized mpox patients. The assessment included visual acuity measurement, inspe

Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV) is one of the most important pathogens in ophthalmology. Reactivation may involve the adnexa (blepharoconjunctivitis, pseudomembranous conjunctivitis), cornea (dendritic keratitis, nummular and necrotizing stromal keratitis, disciform endotheliitis, neurotrophic ulcers, mucous-plaque keratitis) and sclera (episcleritis, anterior scleritis). Uveal inflammation ranges from anterior uveitis-with iris atrophy, trabeculitis-induced glaucoma and complicated cataract-to posterior necrotizing syndromes: acute retinal necrosis in immunocompetent hosts and progressive outer

Streptococcus intermedius, a commensal bacterium in the human oral cavity, can occasionally cause severe infections in deep tissues. The patient was referred because of a conjunctival tumor. She had severe nasal cavity and periocular tissue inflammation that persisted for over a year. Microbiological examination of the nasal and ocular specimens identified S. intermedius as the pathogenic strain. The inflammation and the conjunctival mass subsided after systemic and topical administration of a susceptible antibiotic. Smear microscopy of the eye and nasal discharge was useful for the differenti

Capnocytophaga ochracea (C. ochracea) is a species of Gram-negative and facultative anaerobic bacterium. It was first reported in 1979 and isolated from both healthy and diseased sites in the oral flora. The bacteria can cause septicemia, endocarditis, endometritis, blepharoconjunctivitis and other infections. Herein, we present the first cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) infection case caused by C. ochracea in humans. Gram-negative fusiform, non-spore forming rods were detected in an anaerobic bottle of CSF culture obtained from a 50-year-old man who had been hospitalized for meningioma in Tianjin Hu

Xeroderma Pigmentosum group C (XP-C) is a rare, inherited autosomal recessive genetic disorder characterized by extreme sensitivity to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, caused by mutations in the XPC gene. Among the eight XP complementation groups, XP-C is the most prevalent worldwide. Here, we present an 8-year-old girl with multiple discrete hyperpigmented and depigmented macules on her face, neck, upper chest, and arms. Her skin abnormalities first appeared around the age of one as dark patches on the face and neck, progressively worsening with sun exposure. The patient was also diagnosed with bi

INTRODUCTION: Staphylococcus-related marginal keratitis is an inflammation of the corneal periphery characterized by the presence of stromal infiltrates and blepharoconjunctivitis. Conventional treatment consists of antibiotics and corticosteroid eye drops, and recurrence is prevalent upon treatment cessation. In this case report, we present a 1-year follow-up of the results of a novel therapeutic approach for recurrent marginal keratitis using a combination of chlorhexidine and vancomycin eye drops.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 34-year-old male presented with an 8-year history of recurrent staphyloc

BACKGROUND: Dupilumab has revolutionized treatment of moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD). However, its use has been associated with ophthalmologic adverse events referred to as dupilumab-associated ocular surface disease (DAOSD), reported in up to 30% of patients. Although several risk factors have been proposed, the role of Demodex folliculorum remains poorly defined.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the association between eyelid Demodex infestation and DAOSD development during the first 16 weeks of dupilumab therapy.
METHODS: This prospective study enrolled 30 adults with moderate-to-severe

OBJECTIVE: Encephalitozoon pogonae, a recently identified microsporidian species, has been associated with systemic infections in Central bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps) manifesting as granulomatous inflammation and vasculitis. Despite the species similarity to Encephalitozoon cuniculi, which causes ocular, neurologic, and renal pathology in rabbits, ocular manifestations of E. pogonae in bearded dragons are underreported. This case report aims to explore the ocular manifestations of E. pogonae in a clinical case and highlight the challenges in diagnosis and treatment of microsporidial infe

Various systemic and topical medications can induce ocular and periocular cutaneous adverse effects (AEs), ranging from mild to severe. These AEs may lead to ocular surface (OS) damage and, in some cases, life-threatening complications. Drug-induced ocular adverse reactions are generally classified into two primary categories: toxic reactions and/or allergic hypersensitivity reactions, which can be IgE or non-IgE-mediated. Systemic antibiotics, antivirals, and anticonvulsants can trigger adverse reactions that may involve the OS. Drugs like antihistamines, beta-blockers, antipsychotics, antide

Dupilumab-associated ocular surface disease (DAOSD) is one of the most common adverse events associated with dupilumab (an anti-interleukin-4-receptor-alpha monoclonal antibody) during the treatment of patients with atopic dermatitis (AD). However, it rarely occurs in patients with bronchial asthma or chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps. Adequate understanding of DAOSD is important for proper diagnosis and appropriate ophthalmic intervention. The aim of this review was to summarize and discuss the clinical characteristics and management of DAOSD in Japan. The pathogenesis of DAOSD can be

Phthiriasis palpebrarum is a rare infestation of the eyelids caused by Phthirus pubis. This condition is particularly noteworthy as it is a rare cause of red eyes in children and can often be confused with other forms of blepharoconjunctivitis. In this study, we examined an 11-year-old male patient who was brought to our clinic by his family and presented with redness and itching in both eyes that had persisted for a month. Biomicroscopic examination revealed two live lice with mobile legs and a semi-transparent appearance on the eyelashes of both upper eyelids, together with a large number of
