MicroRNAs as biomarkers and therapeutic targets in pterygia: A systematic review with quantitative synthesis.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are emerging as important regulators in pterygium, a fibrovascular growth of the conjunctiva with high recurrence rates. This systematic review with selective quantitative synthesis aimed to identify differentially expressed miRNAs as potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets of pterygium. A comprehensive search of PubMed and Scopus (January 2010-March 2024) identified 17 eligible studies for the systematic review, of which 13 case-control studies, involving 789 pterygium patients and 546 controls, contributed quantitative data for synthesis. Following PRISMA guidelines,

Conjunctival Autograft Fixation in Primary Pterygium Surgery: A Network Meta-Analysis of Randomized Trials.

TOPIC: Pterygium is a common ocular surface disorder that can impair vision and cause discomfort. Surgical excision with conjunctival autograft (CAG) is the standard treatment. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Despite the widespread use of CAG, postoperative recurrence and graft-related complications remain significant challenges, affecting patient outcomes and healthcare resource utilization. In primary pterygium surgery, CAG fixation can be achieved using fibrin glue (FG), autologous blood, autologous FG (a_FG), or sutures (Vicryl, nylon, silk), yet the comparative effects of these techniques on recurre

Automated segmentation of pterygium lesions using multiscale deep learning networks.

Pterygium is an eye condition that needs to be identified at an early stage so that its progression can be mitigated in order to avoid the possible threat of visual impairment. One of the important low-level modules in determining the severity level of the pterygium automatically is to measure the extent of fibrovascular tissue encroachment onto the corneal and pupil regions. Therefore, it is important to develop a semantic segmentation method to map and quantify the lesion tissues accurately, especially through the deep learning technique. As the pterygium condition progresses from the trace

Accuracy of ChatGPT in differentiating ocular surface neoplasms using text-based summaries: a comparative analysis of pterygium, pseudopterygium, and CIN.

PURPOSE: Differentiating conjunctival intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) from pterygium and pseudopterygium remains clinically challenging, especially in early or atypical presentations. Artificial intelligence (AI), particularly large language models such as ChatGPT, may serve as decision-support tools by synthesizing complex diagnostic input. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic reliability of ChatGPT-4 in distinguishing between these ocular surface lesions and its ability to recommend appropriate treatment strategies based on multimodal clinical data. METHODS: Sixty anonymized case pro

Peripheral anterior lamellar keratoplasty and fornix reconstruction with oral mucosal graft in the management of recurrent pterygium.

Recurrent pterygium presents a significant challenge in ophthalmic surgery due to its high rate of recurrence and associated complications. We describe a case of a 70-year-old male with a third recurrence of pterygium in the right eye, complicated by symblepharon and inferior fornix shortening. Surgical intervention included pterygium excision, corneal scraping, peripheral lamellar keratoplasty (PLK), and fornix reconstruction with an oral mucosal graft. An amniotic membrane transplant was used as an adjunct. Postoperatively, the patient showed progressive improvement in corneal transparency a

Intraocular Lens Power Calculation for Combined Cataract and Pterygium Surgeries.

BACKGROUND: For patients with both cataract and pterygium, combined surgery reduces the burden and cost associated with two separate procedures. However, the accuracy of intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation is compromised in eyes with pterygium, as the lesion disturbs the corneal surface and tear film, leading to erroneous keratometry measurements. This often results in unpredictable postoperative refraction and a tendency toward myopic shift. Therefore, developing a reliable method to determine true corneal power for IOL calculation in such eyes is essential to improve refractive outcomes

Nail Splints to Prevent Dorsal Pterygium After Nail Surgery: Indications and Optimal Selection.

BACKGROUND: After trauma or a variety of nail surgical procedures, there is potential for nail unit epithelium to directly contact dermal connective tissue, putting the nail unit at risk for a bridging scar and resulting dorsal pterygium. To prevent a dorsal pterygium, a variety of materials, including the native nail, have been proposed to splint the proximal nail fold (PNF) and nail matrix (NM). OBJECTIVE: To review the indications, materials, and techniques for intraoperative nail splinting during nail unit surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comprehensive review of nail splints was conduct

An Individualized Surgical Approach for the Management of Recurrent Pterygium: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: This case highlights the complexity of managing highly refractory, recurrent pterygium. Despite numerous prior surgeries by experienced anterior segment surgeons, the patient developed persistent fibrosis, symblepharon formation, and functional limitations. This underscores the need for a tailored, multidisciplinary approach, a strategy not widely documented in current literature. CASE PRESENTATION: Over 6 years, the patient underwent ten previous interventions, including conjunctivoplasty with ipsilateral free conjunctival flap and mitomycin C (MMC), amniotic membrane transplan

Exploring the Contribution of Interleukin-17 Genetic Polymorphisms to Pterygium Risk.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Pterygium is a chronic, fibrovascular ocular surface disorder with tumor-like biological behavior. Although inflammatory mediators such as interleukin-17 (IL17) are increasingly implicated in its pathogenesis, the genetic contribution of IL17 remain unclear. To our knowledge, this study is the first to investigate whether IL17A rs2275913 and IL17F rs763780 polymorphisms influence pterygium susceptibility in a Taiwanese population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This case-control study evaluated the association between promoter IL17A rs2275913 and exonic IL17F rs763780 polymorphisms wi
