INTRODUCTION: Pterygium is a chronic inflammatory condition that commonly occurs on the bulbar conjunctiva of the nasal palpebral fissure. Its etiology is multifactorial, and surgical excision remains the primary treatment method. However, recurrence and other complications may affect treatment outcomes. Currently, the diagnosis and treatment of secondary corneal diseases following pterygium excision surgery vary. Therefore, in vivo confocal microscopy of the cornea holds significant clinical importance in clarifying the etiology of the disease.

Mixed autoimmune hemolytic anemia (mAIHA) is a rare clinical condition where both warm and cold antibodies lead to autoimmune red cell destruction and progressive anemia. Herein, we report a rare case of combined warm and cold agglutinin-mediated autoimmune hemolytic anemia in a 61-year-old male who initially presented with incidental macrocytic anemia during a preoperative evaluation for pterygium surgery. Investigations showed the presence of both warm (IgG) and cold (IgM) autoantibodies, evidenced by a positive direct Coombs test (both anti-IgG and anti-C3), and elevated serum IgM levels. T

Pterygium is a common ocular surface disorder, with its prevalence strongly correlated to ultraviolet (UV) exposure in geographic regions. Epidemiological investigations reveal significant demographic variations, with higher incidences observed in areas with intense UV radiation and within specific populations, notably rural individuals. Despite surgical interventions being the standard treatment, recurrent cases underline the necessity for understanding the underlying biological mechanisms contributing to pterygium pathogenesis. Recent advancements in cellular death mechanisms point to cuprop

BACKGROUND: Pterygium recurrence remains a major postoperative challenge in equatorial regions with high ultraviolet (UV) exposure. Although several clinical and inflammatory factors have been proposed as predictors, evidence remains inconsistent. This study aimed to estimate the recurrence rate after primary pterygium excision with conjunctival-limbal autograft and to explore potential demographic, clinical, surgical, and systemic inflammatory factors associated with recurrence in a Colombian cohort.
METHODS: This prospective cohort study included patients ≥ 18 years undergoing primary ptery

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Corneal opacity (CO) is a significant cause of vision impairment and blindness worldwide. The first National Eye Health Survey in The Gambia (1986) and follow-up (1996) showed a decline in the crude prevalence of blindness but an increase in blindness from non-trachomatous CO. This study aimed to provide an update on the prevalence of CO and identify associated risk factors.
METHODS: Multi-stage stratified cluster random sampling was used to select a nationally representative sample of 10 800 adults aged ≥35 years. Distance best-corrected visual acuity was assessed with Peek

PURPOSE: Pterygium is a common ocular surface disorder strongly associated with ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure and oxidative stress. Double-strand breaks (DSBs) are among the most deleterious forms of DNA damage, and their repair mainly relies on the non-homologous end joining (NHEJ) pathway, in which the DNA-dependent protein kinase (DNA-PK) complex plays a central role. This study investigated the expression of the DNA-PK complex components-DNA-PKcs, Ku70, and Ku86-in pterygium compared with healthy conjunctiva.
METHODS: Conjunctival tissues were obtained from six patients undergoing s

Pathological angiogenesis is a primary driver of pterygium progression, yet the mechanistic role of Secreted Protein Acidic and Rich in Cysteine (SPARC) remains to be fully elucidated. This study investigated the clinical significance and molecular function of SPARC in pterygium-associated neovascularization. Expression analysis in human pterygium tissues revealed a significant upregulation of SPARC, which positively correlated with lesion microvascular density as assessed by immunofluorescence and anterior segment optical coherence tomography angiography. Functionally, in vitro assays demonst

PURPOSE: Collaborative care between optometry and ophthalmology has demonstrated the potential to improve timely access to care. This study examines three settings where real-time optometry-facilitated telehealth was used to expedite specialist eye care in rural and remote Western Australia. Referrals to ophthalmology were triaged to telehealth or face-to-face services. For telehealth, optometrists performed a comprehensive in-person assessment, then facilitated video-consultation with an ophthalmologist during the same attendance for collaborative decision making.
METHODS: In 2023, retrospec

BACKGROUND: Pterygium progression induces corneal optical distortion, and delayed surgery may limit postoperative recovery of corneal optics. However, quantitative criteria indicating the latest acceptable timing of surgery remain unclear. This study aimed to determine extension-rate thresholds predicting postoperative normalization of corneal asymmetry and higher-order irregularity (HOI).
METHODS: This retrospective observational study included 134 eyes with primary pterygium that underwent surgical excision. The pterygium extension rate was calculated from slit-lamp photographs as the ratio

PURPOSE: Conjunctival ultraviolet autofluorescence (CUVAF) is a marker for ocular sun damage. While its potential is recognised in research, factors influencing its development and temporal dynamics remain poorly documented. This systematic review evaluates whether the size of CUVAF reflects recent ultraviolet (UV) exposure, lifetime cumulative damage or both.
RECENT FINDINGS: Google Scholar, PubMed, Embase, Scopus and ProQuest Global databases were searched for papers using defined search terms. Ninety-one articles were assessed and 35 studies using CUVAF as an indicator of sun exposure were

Claudin-1, a transmembrane protein integral to tight junctions, is indispensable for paracellular barrier formation and the establishment and maintenance of cellular polarity. In the eye, claudin-1 exhibits tissue-specific expression in critical structures such as the cornea and retina, where it contributes fundamentally to corneal transparency, blood-retinal barrier integrity, and retinal homeostasis. This review comprehensively synthesizes current knowledge on the spatial distribution and physiological roles of claudin-1 across ocular tissues. We critically evaluate recent mechanistic and tr
