METHODS: Case Report. A 20-year-old white female in good health developed a corneal ulcer in her lefteye associated with daily disposable soft contact lens wear. The purpose of this study was to compare the adhesion of Pseudomonas aeruginosa ocular isolates to mucin. An adhesion assay was developed using biotin-labelled P. aeruginosa strains (two corneal ulcer, two acute red eye, one asymptomatic and one standard strains) incubated with porcine gastric mucin immobilized on a nitrocellulose membrane. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Tectonic epikeratoplasty (TEK) is a method in which a corneal button, preserved in glycerin is used as a seal over corneal perforation. The graft is sutured to the recipient sclera, upon the sick melted cornea, with silk sutures, after 360 degree peritomy of the conjunctiva. The graft is left in place for a few weeks, and by that time the cornea is completely healed. We describe our experience in TEK as a method of treatment for selected cases of melted cornea or descemetocele.

PURPOSE: We present a case of peripheral corneal ulceration in a patient with hepatitis C, which rapidly and dramatically responded to intravenous steroid treatment.
METHODS: Clinical examination and photographs were obtained to document initial presentation and therapeutic response of Mooren's-type ulcers to steroids.

In 4 corneal transplantation patients treated preoperatively with ciprofloxacin ophthalmic drops, microprecipitates associated with damaged corneal epithelium were noted in 2 patients. Another patient developed a large macroprecipitate in a corneal ulcer. All specimens were examined by electron microscopy and high-pressure liquid chromatography. The crystalline precipitates were pure ciprofloxacin. The macroprecipitate demonstrated a large zone of inhibition on agar plates seeded with a susceptible organism at 24 and 48 hours. It was bioactive and bioavailable in vitro.
