Rose Bengal Electromagnetic Activation With Green Light for Infection Reduction: Follow-Up of a Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Infectious keratitis results in poor outcomes despite maximal medical therapy. While rose bengal photodynamic therapy (RB-PDT) has not been shown to be beneficial at improving best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA) or cure rate, decreasing scar size, or complication rate at a shorter period of 6 months, long-term results are essential to evaluate clinically relevant scarring and visual recovery. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate 12-month outcomes from the clinical trial (REAGIR) comparing adjunctive rose bengal photodynamic therapy (RB-PDT) vs sham in treatment of fungal, acanthamoeb

The CXXC1-IGFBP6 Axis Maintains Corneal Epithelial Differentiation via H3K4me3-Dependent Transcriptional Activation.

PURPOSE: To define the role and mechanisms of the epigenetic regulator CXXC1 in corneal epithelial cells (CECs) differentiation. METHODS: Chromatin remodeling-related gene ontology (GO) modules were integrated with RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) to identify CXXC finger protein 1 (CXXC1) as a candidate epigenetic regulator of CECs differentiation. Loss-of-function studies were performed in limbal stem/progenitor cells (LSCs), followed by air-liquid interface-induced differentiation into CECs. Effects of CXXC1 depletion were assessed by RNA-seq, quantitative real-time PCR, and immunofluorescence. Chr

Mechanistic domains in canine corneal ulcer progression: a conceptual framework for adjunctive management.

BACKGROUND: Canine corneal ulcers are commonly encountered in clinical practice and may progress to stromal melting and perforation if not appropriately managed. Adjunctive therapy has traditionally focused on collagenolysis inhibition and is often guided by morphological severity rather than dominant biological drivers. While anticollagenase strategies remain essential, ulcer progression involves interconnected processes, including inflammatory amplification, impaired epithelial repair, and ocular surface instability. This conceptual analysis therefore seeks to develop a mechanism-based conce

Association between fungal growth temperature and corneal lesions in fungal keratitis: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Fungal keratitis is a refractory disease, and cases caused by filamentous fungi are particularly challenging to manage. Considering that the depth of corneal infiltration influences both treatment and visual prognosis, the ability of causative fungi to grow at corneal and anterior chamber temperatures was hypothesized to contribute to the progression of lesions from the deep cornea into the anterior chamber. This study investigated the relationship between the growth temperature of filamentous fungi isolated from keratitis and the depth of corneal infiltration. METHODS: Eight case

Fungal keratitis caused by a dematiaceous Pleosporales member following ocular trauma with a wooden fragment: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Fungal keratitis is a vision-threatening infection. Keratitis caused by dematiaceous fungi belonging to or related to the order Pleosporales is rare and diagnostically challenging because culture growth may be slow, morphology may be nonsporulating, and species-level identification may require molecular methods. CASE PRESENTATION: A 44-year-old male forestry worker developed right ocular pain and a corneal ulcer after ocular trauma with a wooden fragment. He was referred to our hospital approximately one month after the injury; this first visit was defined as Day 0 (202X/11/27). A

Bilateral Blepharoplasty and Shortening of the Third Eyelid Cartilage as Treatment for Chronic Corneal Ulceration in a Giant Rabbit-A Case Report.

This case report describes the clinical presentation and successful surgical management of a combined dorsal entropion-ectropion macroblepharon with an elongated and folded nictitating membrane in a 2-year-old male giant rabbit. The rabbit initially presented with bilateral chronic, recurrent corneal erosions secondary to abnormal eyelid and third eyelid conformation. Surgical correction was performed via wedge excision of the upper eyelid and shortening of the third eyelid cartilage. Following the procedure, the corneal erosions resolved completely and did not recur during a 1-year follow-up

Annexin A1-Fpr2/ALX signaling in Candida keratitis: Regulatory role in pathogenesis and resolution.

BACKGROUND: Candida keratitis (CK) is a vision-threatening corneal infection. Although host immune responses are essential for eliminating fungal pathogens, they can also contribute to corneal tissue damage. The Annexin A1 (AnxA1)-Fpr2/ALX signaling pathway has been widely studied in infectious disease models for its protective role in regulating immune cell recruitment and inflammatory responses; however, its precise involvement in CK remains insufficiently understood. This study aimed to investigate the contribution of the AnxA1-Fpr2/ALX signaling pathway to the pathogenesis of CK. METHODS:
