PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the biomicroscopic, light microscopic, and electron microscopic effects of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) exposure on the outcome of photorefractive keratectomy (PRK).
METHODS: A total of 24 pigmented rabbits were used in the study. One eye of 16 rabbits received a 193-nm, 45-micron deep (-5.0 diopter) excimer laser PRK. Twenty-one days after PRK, eight of the laser-treated eyes were exposed to 100 mJ/cm2 UV-B (280-315 nm) UV radiation by placing the rabbits in a standard clinically used dermatologic chamber for 7 minutes. OBJECTIVE: Exposure to far-wavelength infrared radiation (lambda > 2000 nm) may cause corneal opacity, miosis, and delayed cataracts (onset > 30 days). Near-wavelength infrared exposure (lambda < 1000 nm) may focus on the retina, causing burns; however, early eye examinations in neonates nursed under radiant warmers have failed to reveal acute injuries. Stellate iron deposits in corneal epithelia are a common side effect of radial keratotomy. Similar corneal iron deposits are associated with other corneal surface irregularities including keratoconus, Salzmann's nodular degeneration, corneal scars, keratoplasty and filtering blebs. The prevalence of visual defects, especially from causes associated with nutritional deficiencies, and their relation to diarrhoea in rural Bangladesh have been studied. Retrospectively studied were 91 patients, 14 years of age or less, who had 152 penetrating keratoplasties in 107 eyes, with an average follow-up of 30.1 months. Two hundred consecutive closed vitrectomies through the pars plana were observed for at least five years after operation to determine the results and analyze the complications. Vitrectomy was performed to remove vitreous opacities in 56.5% of the eyes (group 1), as a preliminary procedure in the course of retinal reattachment in 42% (group 2), and to reconstruct the anterior segment in 1.5% (group 3). A patient sustained mild bilateral alkali burns of the cornea following ocular exposure to a commercial hair straightening preparation. This compound and three other products all had an alkaline pH which was not reduced to neutrality by the neutralizer provided. Corneal alkali burns similar to those seen in our patient were produced in experimental animals after brief exposure. Histologic changes were primarily limited to the cornea. The warning against ocular exposure printed on the containers or package insert is not sufficiently emphatic to protect the consumer.

Morphologic observations on a peculiar type of corneal reaction with a predisposition for the superficial stroma of the interpalpebral portion of the cornea are reviewed. Histochemical evidence is provided which indicates that the corneal concretions, though not homogenous, are proteinaceous in nature and contain amino acids not normally detectable in the cornea.
