Bioinspired Tissue Transparency: Achieving Sclera-to-Cornea Transplantation.

Human soft tissues have significant clinical potential for corneal repair, yet their therapeutic efficacy is limited by inherent opacity. This study introduces a bio-inspired decellularization-compression-locking tactic (DCLT) for tissue clearing. The DCLT leads to long-term transparency (>80% light transmittance) of biological soft tissues while preserving native bioactivity by removing light-scattering subcellular structures and regulating extracellular matrix fiber density. This distinguishes it from traditional reagent-mediated tissue-clearing approaches. Using DCLT, transparent decellular

Dual vision transformer with bio-inspired optimization for explainable keratoconus classification.

BACKGROUND: Keratoconus (KCN) is a progressive degenerative corneal disorder characterized by corneal thinning and cone-shaped protrusion, leading to significant visual impairment if not detected early. Accurate staging of KCN using corneal topographic maps is critical for timely diagnosis and effective treatment planning. METHODS: This study proposes an enhanced deep learning framework for KCN stage classification based on corneal topographic images. The model employs a Dual Vision Transformer (DViT) to effectively capture both local and global spatial features. To optimize model performance

Fungal keratitis in Germany : Diagnostics, conservative and microsurgical treatment.

Fungal keratitis is still a relatively rare but very serious ophthalmological condition with a potentially vision-threatening course, possibly including even loss of the eye. Similar to acanthamoeba keratitis, it is often initially misdiagnosed at the slit lamp. For more than 20 years an increase in the incidence of fungal keratitis has been observed, also in Germany, possibly due to the increased use of soft contact lenses and climate change. This article provides an overview of the typical clinical signs and symptoms of keratomycosis and presents the latest findings in the field of diagnosti

A Deep Learning-Based Graphical User Interface for Predicting Corneal Ectasia Scores from Raw Optical Coherence Tomography Data.

Background/Objectives: Keratoconus, a condition in which the cornea becomes thinner and steeper, can cause visual problems, particularly when it is progressive. Early diagnosis is important for preserving visual acuity. Raw data, unlike preprocessed data, are unaffected by software modifications. They retain their native structure across versions, providing consistency for analytical purposes. The objective of this study was to design a deep learning-based graphical user interface for predicting the corneal ectasia score using raw optical coherence tomography data. Methods: The graphical user

The Genetic and Epigenetic Architecture of Keratoconus: Emerging Pathways and Clinical Implications.

BACKGROUND: Keratoconus (KC) is a progressive corneal ectasia and a leading cause of corneal transplantation in young adults. Once regarded as a biomechanical disorder, KC is now recognized as a complex disease driven by genetic predisposition, epigenetic modulation, and environmental triggers. Advances in genomics and transcriptomics have begun to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying corneal thinning and ectasia. OBJECTIVES: This review synthesizes two decades of evidence on the genetic and epigenetic architecture of keratoconus, highlights key molecular pathways implicated by these

From Proteome to miRNome: A Review of Multi-Omics Ocular Allergy Research Using Human Tears.

Ocular allergy (OA) is a subtype of seasonal allergy that causes symptoms of itchiness, redness, swelling and irritation of the ocular surface and eyelids, often triggering allergy-induced eye rubbing and sustained inflammation for up to six months of the year during peak allergy season. These symptoms, coupled with reduced sleep quality, impaired daily productivity and decreased mood, highlight a significant yet underrepresented disease burden. Recent advances in tear-based multi-omics have enabled detailed characterisation of OA-associated biochemical changes on the ocular surface, highlight
