In a series of 30 vitrectomy patients, postoperative corneal complications developed in 14 (47%). Thirteen (92%) of the 14 patients with complications were diabetic. Other factors that were positively correlated with the development of corneal complications included decreased corneal sensitivity, intraoperative lensectomy, and intraoperative epithelial debridement. Corneal sensitivity and thickness were measured in nine subjects. Two different types of hard contact lenses were fitted to each subject; a traditional polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) lens on one eye and a gas-permeable cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) lens on the other eye. In 172 patients the thickness of the corneal graft was followed with frequent measurements during the first 14 days after operation. Three different graft thickness time courses were observed. Four new designs for anterior chamber intraocular lenses using Dacron fibers to achieve fixation were studied. After implantation in rabbit eyes, no lens dislocation occurred. Postmortem examination found firm Dacron adherence to iris tissue in all eyes. Clinically, no difference was noted in the amount of inflammation in eyes receiving a lens with or without Dacron. One new lens design was found to have substantial advantages over the other three models. However, a high incidence of corneal edema was found following insertion of all four experimental lenses.

A double-masked, coded trial was undertaken to evaluate the effect of the topical administration of 2% cromolyn sodium eye drops on vernal keratoconjunctivitis in 14 children. One eye of each patient was treated for one year with cromoly, the other eye with placebo. Cromolyn reduced the characteristic vernal keratitis, vernal corneal ulcers and plaques, and limbal edema and infiltrates but did not affect the number or size of the giant papillae. The drug's long-term topical use did not have any adverse side effects.

We examined 61 affected members of eight families with an inherited corneal dystrophy. The corneal abnormalities varied greatly from one member of a family to another.
