Microsporidia keratoconjunctivitis identified as an emerging zoonotic threat from pet parrots: Clinical and metagenomic next-generation sequencing evidence.

Microsporidia are opportunistic, obligate intracellular fungi capable of causing keratoconjunctivitis. Because the clinical manifestations of microsporidia keratoconjunctivitis are indistinguishable from those of other etiologies, and the organism is difficult to culture, its diagnosis is challenging. The transmission routes of microsporidia keratoconjunctivitis remain poorly defined, and zoonotic sources have long been suspected but rarely confirmed. Between September 2024 and October 2025, a total of 15 confirmed cases of microsporidia keratoconjunctivitis were identified at Peking Universit

Increased efficacy of accelerated corneal collagen crosslinking in rabbit ectasia models due to higher oxygen availability.

The purpose of this study was to comprehensively investigate the efficacy and safety of accelerated corneal collagen crosslinking (A-CXL) in a normoxic or hyperoxic environment. The collagenase type Ⅱ solution was applied to both the left and right eyes of the rabbit after epithelial debridement. Two weeks after collagenase treatment, the corneal morphology parameters (by Pentacam) and biomechanical parameters (by Corvis ST) in vivo were assessed to determine whether corneal ectasia had occurred. Subsequently, these eyes were randomly divided into three groups. The first group did not receive

Heterozygous COL17A1 variants are a frequent cause of amelogenesis imperfecta.

BACKGROUND: Collagen XVII is most typically associated with human disease when biallelic COL17A1 variants (>230) cause junctional epidermolysis bullosa (JEB), a rare, genetically heterogeneous, mucocutaneous blistering disease with amelogenesis imperfecta (AI), a developmental enamel defect. Despite recognition that heterozygous carriers in JEB families can have AI, and that heterozygous COL17A1 variants also cause dominant corneal epithelial recurrent erosion dystrophy (ERED), the importance of heterozygous COL17A1 variants causing dominant non-syndromic AI is not widely recognised. METHODS:

The impact of photoreceptor layer loss on different ocular tissues: Insights from FTIR spectroscopy.

Photoreceptor loss has significant consequences for visual function, and its management is a critical component for treating not only retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa but also its ocular consequences. On the other hand, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy is an excellent tool to investigate molecular structure and dynamics of biological samples, and as a non-destructive and label free measurement, it does not perturb the samples. In this study, detailed analyses of the recorded FTIR spectra from cornea, lens and sclera were performed to mon

Unsupervised corneal contour extraction algorithm with shared model for dynamic deformation videos: improving accuracy and noise resistance.

BACKGROUND: In this study, an automatic corneal contour extraction algorithm with a shared model is developed to extract contours from dynamic corneal videos containing noise, which improves the accuracy of corneal biomechanical evaluation and clinical diagnoses. The algorithm does not require manual labeling and completes the unsupervised semantic segmentation of each frame in corneal dynamic deformation videos based on a fully convolutional deep-learning network using corneal geometry and texture information. RESULTS: We included 1027 corneal videos at Tianjin Eye Hospital (Nankai Universit

Efficacy of enzyme‑induced collagen crosslinking on porcine cornea.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of a new crosslinking (CXL) method, induced by enzymes, on porcine corneas. Corneal strip (10x3 mm) pairs obtained from 60 fresh porcine eyes were harvested and divided into four groups, Groups A-D. Each pair of corneal strips was incised from the central part of the same cornea; one was incubated in transglutaminase (Tgase) solution (microbial Tgase 2 produced by tissue engineering) and the other remained untreated as a control. CXL strips of Groups A-D were incubated with 2, 1, 0.5 and 0.25 U/ml Tgase solution, respectively at 37

Ciliary muscle and anterior segment characteristics in pre-presbyopic adults with Down syndrome.

PURPOSE: Previous research has shown that accommodation deficits are common in individuals with Down syndrome (DS), but the origin and mechanisms behind these deficits are still unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics of different ocular structures involved in accommodation, in particular the ciliary muscle (CM), in a population of individuals with DS to further understand this deficit and its mechanisms. METHODS: Thirty-two volunteer participants of pre-presbyopic age with (n = 16) and without DS (n = 16) were recruited. Temporal and nasal images of the CM were

Diabetic Ocular Surface Has Defects in Oxygen Uptake Revealed by Optic Fiber Microsensor.

PURPOSE: Diabetes mellitus causes diabetic keratopathy (DK). This and other ocular surface disorders are underdiagnosed and problematic for affected patients as well as recipients of diabetic donor corneas. Thus, it is important to find noninvasive means to facilitate determination of the potentially vision-threatening DK. It has been reported that diabetic corneas uptake significantly less oxygen (O2) than healthy controls. However, an integral assessment of the ocular surface is missing. METHODS: Using an optic-fiber O2 micro-sensor (optrode) we demonstrated recently that the healthy ocular

A nationwide survey of facial onset sensory and motor neuronopathy in Japan.

The epidemiology and etiology of facial onset sensory and motor neuronopathy (FOSMN), a rare syndrome that initiates with facial sensory disturbances followed by bulbar symptoms, remain unknown. To estimate the prevalence of FOSMN in Japan and establish the characteristics of this disease, we conducted a nationwide epidemiological survey. In the primary survey, we received answers from 604 facilities (49.8%), leading to an estimated number of 35.8 (95% confidential interval: 21.5-50.2) FOSMN cases in Japan. The secondary survey collected detailed clinical and laboratory data from 21 cases. Dec

Congenital pterygium with anterior segment dysgenesis: rare ocular manifestation in Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome.

Pterygium is a benign, wing-shaped fibrovascular overgrowth of subconjunctival tissue that can encroach over the cornea. This condition usually occurs in individuals aged 20-40 years but is rarely seen in children. We report a case of an infant with Rubenstein-Taybi syndrome presenting with nebulo-macular corneal opacity and congenital pterygium. On examination under anaesthesia, bilateral infero-nasal nebulo-macular corneal opacity (6 × 5 mm) with a whitish pink tissue originating from nasal bulbar conjunctiva was noticed. The probe test was negative for this tissue. To the best of our knowle
