A one-platform comparison study of brinzolamide-loaded liposomes, niosomes, transfersomes, and transniosomes for better management of glaucoma.

Ocular drug delivery presents significant challenges due to various anatomical and physiological barriers. Ultradeformable vesicles have emerged as better vesicular systems for achieving deeper corneal penetration and enhanced ocular bioavailability. This research aims to develop a hybrid vesicular system with improved deformability and compare it to conventional vesicular carriers. The ultradeformable vesicle, termed "transniosomes," is a combination of niosomes, liposomes, and transfersomes, loaded with brinzolamide as model drug. The brinzolamide-loaded transniosomes (BRZ-TN) was formulated

Examining Penetration and Residual Depth in Modern Acrylic Foldable Intraocular Lenses: A Laboratory Study Using Differential Interference Contrast Microscopy to Compare Hydrophilic and Hydrophobic Materials.

Introduction The material of modern intraocular lenses must meet the highest standards and fulfill various requirements. It is crucial that the material shows the best biocompatibility and should be flexible for an uncomplicated implantation process through small corneal incisions but also sufficiently rigid for good stability and centering in the capsular bag. In addition, the optic must remain clear for life and retain the best optical properties. Methods In this laboratory experiment, we performed scratch tests for the mechanical assessment of acrylic intraocular lenses. The aim was to dete

Efficacy and safety of a lipid-containing artificial tear compared with a non-lipid containing tear: a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Dry eye disease (DED) is a prevalent condition affecting over 16 million patients in the USA. DED and the symptoms of ocular discomfort are debilitating and a significant burden on patients. If left untreated, DED can progress to cause severe pathology. Treatment is often initiated by patients without consulting a healthcare professional. This study investigated the safety and efficacy of a novel lipid-containing eye drop (BTC), which might better mimic the components of natural tears. METHODS: This was a multicenter, randomized, double-masked, active control, two arm, parallel gr

Embryonic Flubendiamide Exposure Alters Expression of OTX2 and Other Early Regulators in Domestic Chick Leading to Congenital Eye Defects.

Flubendiamide, a phthalic acid diamide insecticide, has been implicated in potential teratogenic effects on non-target organisms, especially during embryonic development. This study examines the impact of flubendiamide on eye development in chick embryos, a well-established model for vertebrate development. Exposure to 0.5 µg/µL of flubendiamide significantly impaired early ocular morphogenesis, resulting in severe defects such as underdeveloped optic cups and the absence of lens and corneal structures. Histopathological analysis demonstrated disrupted optic cup differentiation, while in silic

Alport syndrome and eye.

Alport syndrome, characterized by renal failure, hearing loss, and ocular abnormalities due to collagen type IV gene mutations, exhibits distinctive ocular manifestations in the various ocular tissues including the cornea, lens, and retina. Ophthalmological examinations, providing noninvasive visibility of basement membrane anomalies caused by collagen type IV mutations, can have a role in Alport syndrome diagnostics. Lenticonus, macular fleck, and other abnormalities also can serve as indicators of inheritance patterns and predictors of severe mutations or early-onset renal failure. Recognizi

Microspherophakia associated with congenital miosis: Coincidence or causality?

Congenital miosis and microspherophakia are rare congenital disorders of the anterior chamber that are associated with multiple other ophthalmological and systemic pathologies or disorders. Nevertheless, the association of both entities have not been described yet. We present the case of a 2-years-old patient without other relevant medical history that presented with high myopia secondary to microspherophakia and associated with congenital miosis.

Reconstruction of rabbit corneal epithelium using adipose and / or bone marrow stem cells.

One of the main causes of corneal blindness is corneal alkali burn, which can also result in serious side effects such as limbal stem cell deficit, corneal perforation, and permanent epithelial abnormalities. This study set out to investigate the therapeutic potential of ADMSCs and BMMSCs for the reconstruction of the corneal surface after chemical alkali burn. Twelve adult rabbits were divided equally into four groups. Each rabbit in the other groups had a chemical alkali burn applied to their right eye using 6 mm-wide NaoH soaked filter paper, while the negative control group had no interven

A case of corneal opacity caused by atovaquone administration.

PURPOSE: Atovaquone is an alternative drug that is used for the prevention and treatment of Pneumocystis pneumonia when the first-line drug, sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (ST combination), cannot be used due to side effects. However, atovaquone is known to cause ocular side effects including oculomucocutaneous syndrome and vortex keratopathy. In this report, we describe a patient who developed bilateral white granular diffuse corneal opacity that extended from the corneal sub-epithelium to the stroma after continuous oral atovaquone administration for 14 months. OBSERVATIONS: The patient was

Corneal Confocal and Specular Microscopic Characteristics in Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma: An Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)-Based Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma, particularly open-angle glaucoma (OAG), is a leading cause of irreversible blindness, associated with optic nerve damage, retinal ganglion cell death, and visual field defects. Corneal biomechanical properties and cellular components, such as corneal nerve and keratocyte densities assessed by in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM), may serve as biomarkers for glaucoma progression. This study aimed to explore the relationship between corneal nerve parameters, keratocyte density, and optical coherence tomography (OCT)-derived retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in primar

CLINICAL AND HISTOPATHOLOGIC OCULAR FINDINGS IN AQUARIUM-HOUSED COWNOSE RAYS (RHINOPTERA BONASUS).

Cownose rays (Rhinoptera bonasus) are susceptible to ocular disease with their prominent globes, but despite being popular animals housed in aquaria, there is little published information about their normal ocular anatomy and common pathologic ocular findings. A total of 63 live cownose rays (CNR) from three unrelated, separately housed groups had ocular examinations, and 5 adult rays were selected for ocular ultrasound. All examinations were performed out of the water, and most without anesthesia. Clinical findings were described, categorized, and scored by severity. Sixty-two of 63 rays (123

Regenerative Therapy for Corneal Scarring Disorders.

The cornea is a transparent and vitally multifaceted component of the eye, playing a pivotal role in vision and ocular health. It has primary refractive and protective functions. Typical corneal dysfunctions include opacities and deformities that result from injuries, infections, or other medical conditions. These can significantly impair vision. The conventional challenges in managing corneal ailments include the limited regenerative capacity (except corneal epithelium), immune response after donor tissue transplantation, a risk of long-term graft rejection, and the global shortage of transpl
