Ocular manifestations in patients with Lyme borreliosis in northwest Croatia that occurred during the period between 1992 and 2001 were retrospectively analysed. The diagnosis of Lyme borreliosis was based on medical history, clinical manifestations, epidemiological data about tick contact, determinations of antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi by serological assays, immunoblot analysis, therapeutic results and exclusion of other infectious agents of ocular disease. Of the eleven patients reported here with clinical manifestations of ocular Lyme borreliosis, 6 had chorioretinitis, 1 papillitis,

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis may be a lethal disease. Its ocular manifestations are commonly associated with severe difficulties in diagnosis and therapy; furthermore, it may cause blindness. DNA amplification methods may allow early detection of small amounts of Mycobacterium tuberculosis DNA to afford the possibility of prompt diagnosis. We evaluated a nested polymerase chain reaction (nPCR) assay for detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis DNA in aqueous and vitreous.
METHODS: In a case-control study, 22 cases of diagnosed TB uveitis (three HIV-infected patients) and 38 controls (18 HIV-infect

The eye manifestations of congenital toxoplasmosis were investigated in 38 infants and children. Diagnosis of the congenital ocular lesions was established clinically, using also X-ray, computed tomography and ultrasonography, and confirmed by two immunodiagnostic techniques. Infants and children were examined when one or more characteristic manifestations of ophthalmic disorders were present. Typical symptoms and signs can present at birth or appear later in life. The multiplicity of clinical manifestations is characteristic of the disease. The most common symptom was chorioretinitis (92%), a

Fuchs heterochromic cyclitis (FHC) is characterized by a predominant CD8(+) T cell subset infiltrating the anterior chamber, but the clonal composition of these T cells is unknown. In the present study, T cell repertoire diversity of the accumulating T cells was analyzed to investigate if a high degree of restriction could indicate antigen-driven immune response. Aqueous humor (AH) and peripheral blood cells were collected in two patients with FHC. T cell repertoire diversity was screened by T cell receptor (TCR) BV family expression. In one patient, several BV gene segments were used by lymph

The contagiousity of tuberculosis was demonstrated by Carl J. Salomonsen in 1877, injecting human caseous material in rabbit eyes, causing granulomatous iritis. It was five years before Robert Koch found the bacterium: Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MT). Marius Tscherning as professor emeritus from the University of Copenhagen, injected bovine MT and sanocrysin (Mølgaard's goldderivate) into rabbit eyes, causing corneal phlyctenules, but no ophthalmic reaction developed with only MT or sanocrysin alone (1928-29), not published). Emil Frandsen in 1959 examined 113 BCG vaccinated persons, who devel

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the combination of Fuchs' heterochromic uveitis (FHU) and retinitis pigmentosa (RP) in the same patient is coincidental or represents a true association.
METHODS: We have examined the frequency of FHU in 338 patients with RP and in 1984 patients who were seen in our primary care ophthalmic clinic because of reasons other than RP.
RESULTS: Of 338 patients with RP, 4 (1.2%) had the typical findings of FHU. Three of them had Usher syndrome type II, and 1 had RP simplex. By contrast, only 1 patient in the control group had FHU (5%), and the difference in the fre

Five patients with the Kraup-Posner-Schlossmann syndrome are described. The disease has been erroneously taken for chronic serous iridocyclitis of tuberculous origin with hypertension. One patients later developed a true glaucomatous process. The authors believe that the complex of characteristic symptoms of glaucomatous crisis in general can be considered pathognomonic for this disease. No differential diagnosis for ruling out tuberculous or other (endogenous) iridocyclitis is needed in cases when this complex is present. Patients with symptomatic ophthalmic hypertension are in need of regula
