Extracting the Unexpected: A 35-mm Curved Nail as an Intraocular Foreign Body.

BACKGROUND Management of posterior segment intraocular foreign bodies is challenging, requiring the preservation of ocular integrity and restoring vision. Traumatic endophthalmitis occurs in 7% to 13% of penetrating injuries, particularly with coexisting intraocular foreign bodies. Managing posterior segment intraocular foreign bodies poses significant challenges due to their complex clinical presentation and the need to achieve multiple goals during treatment. This unusual case of a large metallic intraocular foreign body associated with traumatic cataract, retinal detachment, and endophthalm

Surgery and toceranib for renal cell carcinoma with caval thrombus in a dog.

A 14-year-old spayed female papillon dog was presented with hematuria and a right renal mass. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a tumor thrombus extending about 1.5 cm cranially from the right renal vein into the caudal vena cava (CVC), consistent with renal cell carcinoma and caval thrombus, with no signs of distant metastasis. The dog underwent open right-sided nephrectomy and CVC thrombectomy, using 2 tourniquets, with a total occlusion time of 12 min 13 s. Transient hypotension during surgery was successfully managed, and there were no major intra- or postoperative complicatio

[Chinese expert consensus on the diagnosis and treatment of traumatic cataract (2026)].

Traumatic cataract is a common complication of ocular trauma. The clinical management of traumatic cataract is highly challenged by the complexity of surgical decision-making due to concomitant ocular injury, substantial difficulty in the postoperative complication management, and inherent uncertainty of visual prognosis. In order to standardize and elevate the quality of medical care for patients with traumatic cataract across China, the China Ocular Trauma Society has reached a consensus based on a thorough review of domestic and international literature and extensive discussions. This conse

How Well Do Ocular Trauma Scores Predict Vision after Open-Globe Injury?: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

TOPIC: This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluate the predictive accuracy of ocular trauma scoring systems, particularly the Ocular Trauma Score (OTS) and Pediatric OTS (POTS), for estimating final visual outcomes after open-globe injuries (OGIs). CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Open-globe injuries are vision-threatening injuries with significant global morbidity. In children, amblyopia risk and age-related limitations in visual assessment complicate prognostication. Although OTS and POTS are commonly used for counseling and triage, their accuracy and applicability in pediatric patients remain unc

A Patient With Ocular Penetration and Traumatic Cataract During Double-Eyelid Blepharoplasty.

We report a patient who developed ocular penetration with a traumatic cataract following double-eyelid blepharoplasty. A 19-year-old woman experienced immediate visual loss in her left eye after surgery. A slit-lamp examination revealed puncture wounds involving the cornea, iris, and full-thickness lens capsule, suggesting a linear penetrating injury. Due to the development of a traumatic cataract, the patient underwent phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation combined with pars plana vitrectomy. Postoperatively, visual acuity improved significantly without retinal complications.

Swept-source intraoperative optical coherence tomography for real-time detection of anterior segment membranes during cataract surgery: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Visualization of delicate membranous structures during cataract surgery is often limited under conventional surgical microscopes, particularly when tissues are transparent or obscured. This study aimed to evaluate the intraoperative visualization of delicate membranous structures during cataract surgery using swept-source intraoperative optical coherence tomography (SS-iOCT). METHODS: This retrospective observational case series was conducted at the ophthalmology center of a Grade-A tertiary hospital in China. Six eyes of six patients [mean age, 55.3 years; 5 males (83.3%)] underg

Occult capsular injury in suspected traumatic and iatrogenic cataracts: a case report with imaging and pearls for surgical management.

Traumatic and iatrogenic cataracts may conceal occult capsular injury that routine slit-lamp examination and biometry fail to detect, increasing the risk of intraoperative complications. We present a mechanism-aware, imaging-guided approach to cataract surgery in an eye with suspected capsular compromise. An elderly man with a dense cataract and limited fundus view underwent preoperative imaging, which revealed a focal anterior capsular defect on ultrasound biomicroscopy, while posterior capsule integrity remained uncertain. His history included multiple intravitreal injections and prior anter

KLF5 promotes proliferation, migration, and autophagy-/EMT‑associated molecular changes in lens epithelial cells via transcriptional activation of THBS1 in traumatic cataract.

PURPOSE: Traumatic cataract is a common blinding eye disease after ocular trauma, and its pathogenesis is closely related to lens epithelial cell dysfunction, while the definite molecular regulatory mechanism between upstream transcription factor and downstream target gene remains poorly clarified. This study aimed to clarify the role and molecular mechanism of the krüppel-like factor 5 (KLF5)/ thrombosponin 1 (THBS1) axis in regulating proliferation, migration, epithelial-mesenchymal transition and autophagy of lens epithelial cells in traumatic cataract, and to explore its potential clinical
