PURPOSE: We present our findings in a case with an intraocular foreign body in which the electroretinographic (ERG) findings were useful.
OBSERVATIONS: A 37-year-old man was injured by an iron fragment that penetrated into his left eye through the cornea. His visual acuity was counting fingers, and a traumatic cataract prevented an examination of the fundus. B-mode ultrasonography showed a stick-like foreign body of approximately 14 mm in length in the eye. Preoperative ERGs with a contact lens electrode showed reduced responses with many blinking artifacts. Lensectomy and pars plana vitrecto

Intraocular foreign bodies (IOFBs) can present in an insidious manner. A 20-year-old male presented with gradual visual loss in the right eye over a six-month period. He was found to have a dense cataract. During examination he was noted to have a small, healed corneal scar and subtle iris heterochromia. Further questioning revealed a previously undisclosed metal-on-metal hammering injury concerning for an IOFB. B-scan ultrasonography was inconclusive and CT studies confirmed the presence of IOFB. The patient underwent a combined cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation with a pa

Penetrating eye injuries caused by bird pecking are uncommon with less than 40 cases reported in the literature. In this article, we present a case of penetrating ocular injury caused by a bird along with pertinent literature review. An otherwise healthy 56-year old man presented to the emergency department complaining of right eye severe pain and decreased vision following trauma caused by a bittern bird. The patient was diagnosed with penetrating ocular injury & he underwent primary repair. On follow up, he was found to have traumatic cataract, which was operated, however, the surgery was co

PURPOSE: Cataract surgery in patients suffering from zonular weakness can be difficult and lead to severe complications. The insertion of capsular tension rings to stabilize the capsular bag along all steps of the phacoemulsification is an option, although can be difficult to remove intra- or post-operatively. A capsular tension ring with a thread is a safe alternative, which allows its easy removal at the end of the surgery.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective study of regular practice on 14 patients with zonular weakness who underwent phacoemulsification. Among them, 12 suffered from pseudo

BACKGROUND: Traumatic hyphema is the entry of blood into the anterior chamber (the space between the cornea and iris) subsequent to a blow or a projectile striking the eye. Hyphema uncommonly causes permanent loss of vision. Associated trauma (e.g. corneal staining, traumatic cataract, angle recession glaucoma, optic atrophy, etc.) may seriously affect vision. Such complications can lead to permanent impairment of vision. People with sickle cell trait/disease may be particularly susceptible to increases of elevated intraocular pressure. If rebleeding occurs, the rates and severity of complicat

Intraocular foreign body (IOFB) in cases of penetrating eye injury accounts for an important indication of vitreoretinal intervention following ocular trauma. Vascular occlusion as a complication of IOFB is rare. Here we present a case of a 34-year-old male with post-traumatic cataract and an intraocular metallic foreign body (IOFB) lodged in the superficial layers of the retina inferotemporal to the disc, causing an inferotemporal branch retinal artery occlusion. The case was managed by lensectomy with pars plana vitrectomy and IOFB removal followed by a second procedure of secondary IOL impl

We present a case of posterior capsular defect with traumatic cataract after blunt trauma in which an extended focal length intraocular lens (IOL) was implanted in the bag after conventional phacoemulsification and anterior vitrectomy. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography performed preoperatively aided in the confirmation and documentation of the capsular integrity. Intraoperative trocar anterior chamber (AC) maintainer allowed AC maintenance without further complications. IOL was well centered postoperatively at 6 months, and the unaided visual acuity was 20/20 for distance and N8 fo
