Surgical Volume for Intraocular Lens (IOL) Dislocation/Decentration and Associated Patient/Ocular Factors: A Retrospective Multicenter Study in Japan.

Purpose This study aimed to analyze temporal changes in the number of surgeries performed for intraocular lens (IOL) dislocation/decentration and aphakia and to examine the associated patient and ocular background factors across three institutions. Methods We conducted a retrospective review of all cataract-related procedures performed between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2014, at Nagoya University Hospital, Sugita Eye Hospital, and Miyake Eye Hospital. We quantified (1) the annual number of standard cataract surgeries (routine lens extraction with IOL implantation), (2) the annual number

Needle-Guided Scleral Fixation: A New Single-Suture Approach.

Background: Scleral fixation of intraocular lenses (IOLs) is a valuable option in cases of aphakia or inadequate capsular support, yet conventional sutured and sutureless approaches can pose technical challenges and complication risks. The needle-guided scleral fixation technique offers a simplified, single-suture solution that enhances safety and reproducibility. Methods: In this retrospective interventional case series, 30 eyes with insufficient capsular support underwent IOL implantation using Meduri's needle-guided single-suture technique at the G. Martino University Hospital, Messina. The

Posterior capsular rent - Prevention, recognition, and management - A review.

We prefer using posterior capsular rent is a significant intraoperative complication of cataract surgery, often leading to vision-threatening sequelae if not promptly recognized and appropriately managed. PCR can result from various factors, weak zonules, posterior polar cataracts, including improper phacoemulsification techniques, and excessive instrument manipulation. Early recognition is critical, and swept-source optical coherence tomography and intraoperative assessments can enhance early detection. Prevention strategies focus on meticulous surgical planning, careful hydrodissection, judi

[Pediatric cataract-part 2 : Surgical treatment].

Pediatric cataract surgery is very different from adult cataract surgery. A profound understanding of surgical technique, age at time of surgery, combined ocular and systemic diseases to be associated with long-term functional or morphological outcomes is important for planning and performing treatment of cataracts in children. Increased intra- and postoperative risk and individual amblyogenic risk mainly affect surgical versus nonsurgical treatment decisions. The most common long-term complication in children following congenital cataract surgery is aphakic glaucoma. It is well established th

Suprachoroidal implantation of corticosteroid slow release implants for the treatment of cystoid macular edema.

In cases of an unstable iris-lens diaphragm, intravitreal corticosteroid slow-release implants (CSRI) may accidentally migrate into the anterior chamber, leading to damage to the corneal endothelium. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a suprachoroidal application of these primarily intravitreal implants to address this issue. In this single-center, retrospective proof of principle study, we observed consecutive cases of patients receiving dexamethasone and fluocinolon acetonide implants that were administered into the suprachoroidal space in patients with CME

Incidence of postoperative retinal detachment and bacterial endophthalmitis in the Swedish national paediatric cataract register and associated risk factors.

PURPOSE: To investigate the incidence and risk factors of retinal detachment (RD) and bacterial endophthalmitis in a cohort of children who underwent cataract surgery before the age of eight. METHODS: Data was retrieved from the Swedish national paediatric cataract register. All eyes with congenital or infantile cataract that underwent surgery between January 1, 2007, and December 31, 2023 with at least one follow-up were included. Cases associated with trauma, uveitis or RD at surgery were excluded. Parameters that could be important for complications were analysed. RESULTS: RD was found in

Predicting 10 Year Glaucoma Using Anterior Segment Biometry for Infants with Unilateral Congenital Cataract.

PURPOSE: Glaucoma following congenital cataract surgery is the most common secondary form of glaucoma in children and a serious sight-threatening complication following congenital cataract surgery. Therefore, risk assessment for future glaucoma is integral to the management of infants undergoing cataract surgery. Biometry of the anterior segment may offer the opportunity to enhance estimation of an infant's risk of developing glaucoma. This study aims to use preoperative anterior segment biometry to predict future glaucoma among infants undergoing congenital cataract surgery and provide a risk

Purpureocillium lilacinum Keratitis and Endophthalmitis in an Aphakic Eye With Secondary Glaucoma: A Case Report.

Purpureocillium lilacinum(formerly Paecilomyces lilacinus) is a rare filamentous fungus that can cause keratitis in eyes with predisposing factors such as chronic ocular surface disease, previous surgery, trauma, or long-term use of topical steroids. This infection often exhibits resistance to standard antifungal agents and can result in severe visual loss. We report a case of keratitis combined with endophthalmitis in a male patient under 60 years of age with a history of childhood ocular trauma leading to aphakia and secondary glaucoma of the right eye. The patient had undergone several prev

Prophylactic barrage laser in patients with previous vitreous loss during cataract surgery: a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: One of the significant challenges that can arise during cataract surgery is the occurrence of posterior capsule rupture (PCR) and vitreous loss. It may result in different complications including cystoid macular edema, endophthalmitis, glaucoma, and considerably retinal detachment which consequently contributes to poor functional outcomes. METHODS: This study was a prospective double blinded randomized clinical trial including 42 patients with previous complicated cataract surgery including posterior capsular rupture and consequently vitreous loss that anterior vitrectomy was done

Clinical Outcomes Following Suture Fixation of Intraocular Lenses at the University Eye Clinic Freiburg: A Retrospective Analysis.

Background: Suture fixation of intraocular lenses (IOLs) is a rare but essential procedure for patients with inadequate capsular support, offering crucial therapeutic benefits. This study analyzes a large cohort of patients undergoing IOL suture fixation, focusing on demographics, risk factors, and clinical outcomes. Methods: In this retrospective analysis of 332 eyes treated at the Eye Center of the University Hospital Freiburg (2008-2022), we evaluated immediate and long-term postoperative outcomes, including visual acuity and refraction. The follow-up averaged 2.5 years. A detailed analysis

[Penetrating ocular injuries in children: Clinical profile and psychosocial impact in southern Tunisia].

INTRODUCTION: Penetrating ocular injuries in children are a public health issue due to their frequency, severity, and psychosocial impact. This study describes the clinical and psychosocial profile of such injuries in children from southern Tunisia and identifies poor prognostic factors. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of 86 children hospitalized for penetrating ocular injuries at Habib Bourguiba University Hospital in Sfax from January 2015 to December 2021. Demographic, clinical, and treatment data were collected, as well as impact on quality of life as measured usi

PURPOSE: Patients with lipomyelomeningocele (LMMC) represent a unique population within the spectrum of spinal dysraphism. The natural history of LMMC remains poorly defined. The description and prevalence of the presenting orthopaedic clinical signs and symptoms for LMMC have been infrequent and often documented only in general terms. The goal of this study is to define the patterns and prevalence of presenting clinical musculoskeletal signs and symptoms in LMMC patients. METHODS: This study was a retrospective review of charts of all patients identified as having LMMC in our spina bifida cl
