Non-tobacco nicotine use and the risk of cataract development.

PURPOSE: To examine the relationship between non-tobacco nicotine product (NTNP) exposure and the risk of cataract development and cataract surgery. DESIGN: A retrospective analysis of aggregated healthcare data within the TriNetX U.S. Collaborative Network METHODS: We identified patients with documented exposure to NTNPs (n = 107,462) and control patients (n = 2,512,152) without exposure. NTNP exposure was defined as having had a vaping-related or unspecified nicotine dependence diagnosis. Patients with pre-existing lens disorders, ocular trauma, or procedures were excluded. Propensity score

[Complications of Pseudohypoparathyroidism and Congenital Forms of Hypoparathyroidism in Children].

BACKGROUND: Hypoparathyroidism (HypoPT) and pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) are rare, predominantly genetically determined diseases in children with similar complications, characterized by hypocalcemia and hyperphosphatemia. PHP and HypoPT have similar complications: brain and lens calcification. In HypoPT, there is also an increased risk of developing nephrocalcinosis. Data on the frequency and structure of complications in affected children in Russia are limited, and comparative studies are lacking. AIM: To compare the prevalence of chronic complications and to identify factors associated wi

Inventory of Ocular Pulse Amplitude Values in Healthy Subjects and Patients With Ophthalmologic Illnesses: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Many studies have examined the ocular pulse amplitude (OPA) to better understand its physiology and clinical relevance, but the papers are scattered, not consistently indexed, and sometimes difficult to locate. We aimed to identify and summarize the relevant published evidence on OPA and, in a meta-analysis, outline specific differences of this parameter between healthy individual, primary open-angle glaucoma, normal-tension glaucoma, ocular hypertension, and cataract patients. DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: A thorough literature search and data extraction wer

Coding long COVID: characterizing a new disease through an ICD-10 lens.

BACKGROUND: Naming a newly discovered disease is a difficult process; in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and the existence of post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC), which includes long COVID, it has proven especially challenging. Disease definitions and assignment of a diagnosis code are often asynchronous and iterative. The clinical definition and our understanding of the underlying mechanisms of long COVID are still in flux, and the deployment of an ICD-10-CM code for long COVID in the USA took nearly 2 years after patients had begun to describe their condition. Here, we le

Pathogenic variants in the CYP21A2 gene cause isolated autosomal dominant congenital posterior polar cataracts.

BACKGROUND: Congenital cataracts are the most common cause of visual impairment worldwide. Inherited cataract is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous disease. Here we report disease-causing variants in a novel gene, CYP21A2, causing autosomal dominant posterior polar cataract. Variants in this gene are known to cause autosomal recessive congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). METHODS: Using whole-exome sequencing (WES), we have identified disease-causing sequence variants in two families of British and Irish origin, and in two isolated cases of Asian-Indian and British origin. Visual acuity and color discrimination in patients with cataracts.

Color vision tests can give information about pathological changes in eye structures. The purpose of our research was to study the color vision sensitivity and visual acuity changes before and after cataract surgery. We used a saturated Farnsworth D15 color vision arrangement test to check color sensitivity changes in confusion line directions. The test is easily perceptible (essential to eldery patients), and it is possible to check color sensitivity changes in tritan, protan, and deutan confusion line directions. The results were analyzed in several ways: by summing the color differences bet

The genetic landscape of crystallins in congenital cataract.

BACKGROUND: The crystalline lens is mainly composed of a large family of soluble proteins called the crystallins, which are responsible for its development, growth, transparency and refractive index. Disease-causing sequence variants in the crystallins are responsible for nearly 50% of all non-syndromic inherited congenital cataracts, as well as causing cataract associated with other diseases, including myopathies. To date, more than 300 crystallin sequence variants causing cataract have been identified. METHODS: Here we aimed to identify the genetic basis of disease in five multi-generation

Lenticular fungal infection caused by Aspergillus in a patient with traumatic corneal laceration: a case report.

BACKGROUND: To report a case of lenticular infection caused by Aspergillus, which was diagnosed 13 weeks after traumatic corneal laceration. CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old woman presented with traumatic corneal laceration including anterior lens capsule rupture and traumatic cataract after being hit with a chestnut in the right eye. There were multiple injuries due to tiny thorns of the chestnut, including the conjunctiva, sclera, cornea, and anterior lens capsule. But no visible foreign body was detected by slit-lamp examination. Topical corticosteroid was prescribed to resolve the conjunc

[Systemic diagnostic error of senile dementia by cataract-related impairment of information processing?].

PURPOSE: According to several investigations, late-acquired diagnostically unspecified visual impairments lead to reduced intelligence levels. In cataracts, in particular, we measured reductions in IQ prior to IOL implantation. QUESTION: Do cataract-related IQ impairments reach the level of senile dementia? OBJECTIVE: To examine if cataracts and their removal have a particular relevance in senile dementia. METHODS: The IQ reduction measured in cataract samples in four studies are compared with normal values of dementia. In addition, research of the literature on diagnostic problems. RESULT

Do patients with age related maculopathy and cataract benefit from cataract surgery?

AIMS: To assess the benefits of cataract extraction in patients with age related maculopathy (ARM). METHODS: 1073 randomly selected cataract operations were reviewed and 99 cases of preoperatively recognised ARM were identified for investigation. Data relating to visual function were retrieved from case notes, and patient responses to a questionnaire were analysed. RESULTS: 98% had dry or unspecified ARM. Only 2% had exudative maculopathy. 81% of cases had an improvement in best distance acuity; mean change 0.44 logMAR (change of 6/36 to 6/12). 65% responded to the questionnaire; 67% felt th
