Pyogranulomatous panophthalmitis with systemic coronavirus disease in a domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo).

A 15-month-old spayed female ferret (Mustela putorius furo) presented for lethargy and weight loss of 2 weeks duration. Upon physical examination, a 2-mm-diameter focal area of opacity was noted in the left cornea. In addition, the ferret was quiet, in poor body condition, and dehydrated. A complete blood count and plasma biochemistry revealed a severe nonregenerative anemia, azotemia, hyperproteinemia, hypoalbuminemia, and mild hyperphosphatemia and hyperchloremia. Urinalysis revealed hyposthenuria. Whole body radiographs showed multifocal thoracic nodular disease, splenomegaly, and renomegal

Multimodal imaging of refractory Candida chorioretinitis progressing to endogenous endophthalmitis.

BACKGROUND: Endogenous fungal endophthalmitis is a serious vision-threatening condition that occurs in immunosuppressed patients with candidemia. FINDINGS: We report a complicated case of Candida albicans chorioretinitis that progressed to endophthalmitis. The patient required intravitreal and systemic anti-fungal medications with pars plana vitrectomy for successful treatment. Multimodal imaging using fundus photography, fluorescein angiography, spectral domain optical coherence tomography, and fundus autofluorescence was obtained throughout treatment. These modalities localized the Candida

A case of uveitis due to Rickettsia conorii infection in Southeastern France.

We describe a case of skin rash and bilateral uveitis secondary to Rickettsia conorii infection. A 60-year-old female patient, living in the rural hinterland of Cannes, was referred to our hospital in mid-August 2012 for skin rash, fever, and arthromyalgia. Blood tests showed increased inflammatory markers, hepatic cytolysis and anicteric cholestasis. Ophthalmic examination revealed bilateral papillitis and focal chorio-retinitis. Fluoroscopic angiography demonstrated early hypofluorescence, with a few arteriolar occlusions, and subsequent hyperfluorescence and focal vasculitis. R. conorii ant

Ocular bartonellosis in transplant recipients: two case reports and review of the literature.

Cat scratch disease is caused by Bartonella henselae and usually manifests as localized lymphadenopathy and fever in immunocompetent patients. Immunocompromised patients are at risk for developing disseminated disease affecting the liver, spleen, eyes, central nervous system, and other organs. Bartonellosis is infrequently reported in solid organ transplant recipients, and published case reports usually discuss disseminated infection. Localized ocular disease with B. henselae, while well documented in immunocompetent hosts, is uncommon in immunocompromised patients. Herein, we present 2 cases

Posterior segment involvement in cat-scratch disease: A case series.

INTRODUCTION: Cat-scratch disease (CSD) is a systemic infectious disease. The most well-known posterior segment presentation is neuroretinitis with a macular star. In this study, we present a case series emphasising the heterogeneity of the disease and the various posterior segment manifestations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective case series of consecutive patients presenting with posterior segment CSD, over a 5-year period (2010 to 2015), at two ophthalmological centres in Midi-Pyrénées. RESULTS: Twelve patients (17 eyes) were included, of whom 11 (92%) presented with rapidly decreasi

Transcranial magnetic stimulation to understand pathophysiology and as potential treatment for neurodegenerative diseases.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a complex, centralized pain condition that is often difficult to diagnose and treat. FM is considered to have a genetic background due to its familial aggregation and due to findings from multiple candidate-gene studies implicating catecholaminergic and serotonergic neurotransmitter systems in chronic pain. However, a multi-factorial analysis of both genetic and environmental risk factors is lacking. A better characterization of the interplay of risk factors may assist in understanding the pathophysiology of FM, its clinical course, and assist in early diagnosi

Spectral domain optical coherence tomography findings in acute syphilitic posterior placoid chorioretinitis.

BACKGROUND: We describe the spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) findings in three patients with acute syphilitic posterior placoid chorioretinitis (ASPPC). The SD-OCT images demonstrate the pathologic changes in ASPPC with a high level of anatomic detail and may provide information about the pathophysiology of the disease. FINDINGS: We report a series of three consecutive patients seen at the Wilmer Eye Institute in 2012 and 2013 who presented with clinical and laboratory findings consistent with a diagnosis of unilateral ASPPC. Two of the three patients had HIV co-infection

[Congenital toxoplasmosis with ocular involvment--case report].

Two thirds of the congenital toxoplasmosis cases describe minimal or inapparent symptoms present at birth, being diagnosed from a psychomotor retard. The forms of chorioretinitis may be described by repeated outbursts in the first years of life. Chorioretinitis or focal necrotizing retinitis usually develops in a bilateral way, being progressive and leading to blindness. Usually there is only one focal inflammatory beginning at the edge of a pigmented scar and the local inflammatory process may extend through successive spikes in other regions of the retina. Active chorioretinitis is expressed
