PURPOSE: To determine classification criteria for multifocal choroiditis with panuveitis (MFCPU).
DESIGN: Machine learning of cases with MFCPU and 8 other posterior uveitides.
METHODS: Cases of posterior uveitides were collected in an informatics-designed preliminary database, and a final database was constructed of cases achieving supermajority agreement on diagnosis, using formal consensus techniques. Cases were split into a training set and a validation set. Machine learning using multinomial logistic regression was used on the training set to determine a parsimonious set of criteria that

This study aims at identifying ocular findings in infants with microcephaly associated with presumed intrauterine infection by ZIKV. A cross-sectional study included 62 outpatient infants with congenital microcephaly, presumably secondary to maternal ZIKV infection. The included infants had head circumference below -2 standard deviations, with negative maternal serology for toxoplasmosis, rubella, cytomegalovirus, syphilis, and HIV. Assessment of ocular alterations was performed through review of their medical records. Forty two (67.7%) of the children analyzed presented some degree of ocular

Toxoplasmosis is a common infection whose worldwide prevalence is estimated at 30%, with large disparities across the world. Among infected subjects, the prevalence of ocular toxoplasmosis (OT) is, however, limited to about 2% in Europe and 17% in South America. In France, it is estimated that about 1 000 000 patients present either active OT or subsequent chorioretinal scars. Toxoplasmagondii is the first cause of posterior uveitis worldwide, responsible for retinochoroiditis, at times associated with anterior uveitis. To date, there is no consensus yet on how to diagnose OT, which is often b

PURPOSE: To report the unique clinical findings of a case of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 herpetic retinitis manifesting as a large elevated subretinal lesion.
OBSERVATIONS: A 26-year-old Hispanic male with no significant past medical history presented with a one-week history of right eye pain and endorsement of worsening vision. Ophthalmic examination of the right eye identified a markedly elevated white subretinal lesion with associated findings of vitritis and hypotony. Ultrasound biomicroscopy demonstrated a diffusely thickened choroid and confirmed the observed subretinal mass. Examinatio

A 17-year-old male presented with acute bilateral paracentral scotomata and blurred vision. Funduscopic examination showed bilateral macular serous retinal detachment and yellow-white placoid lesions at the level of retinal pigment epithelium. OCT study showed typical VKH disease findings with marked choroidal thickening and macular serous retinal detachment partly with subretinal septa in both eyes. FA demonstrated hypofluorescence at the placoid lesions in the early phase and hyperfluorescence in the late phase. Laboratory investigation showed negative result for HLA-DR4 serotype and the pat

Peripheral exudative hemorrhagic chorioretinopathy (PEHCR) is relatively rare and especially less known and therefore less often diagnosed condition of the retina periphery predominantly in patients of higher age. Usually temporal periphery is affected. The finding is bilateral in approximately 30 %. Clinically it manifests by multibulbar prominences in periphery, which can sometimes resemble choroidal melanoma. It concerns exudations and hemorrhages under retina (sub-retinal) or under retinal pigment epithelium (sub-RPE). Within weeks or months hemorrhagy is resorbed and flattened and chorio

Vision plays an important role in the development of communication, social interaction, spatial awareness, and the motor skills needed to explore the environment. In the past 2 years, researchers have described the broad spectrum of clinical features that comprise congenital Zika syndrome (CZS). The ocular manifestations are considered 1 important pillar of this new entity. The most characteristic ophthalmic findings include chorioretinal scars and focal pigmentary changes seen in the macular region. Since these findings were first reported, other researchers have validated and extended them,

This report illustrates a case of asymptomatic bilateral orbital varices in a 64-year-old Caucasian male. The orbital varices were incidentally discovered while investigating the patient's initial presentation of bilateral chorioretinal scars and optic nerve head drusen. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain and orbits with contrast confirmed the presence of bilateral varices of the inferior ophthalmic veins and pterygoid plexuses. The occurrence of bilateral orbital varices is quite rare, and few asymptomatic cases have been described in the literature.

RATIONALE: Chronic uveitis with immunosuppressive agents could develop chronic herpetic retinitis with varicella-zoster virus (VZV) or herpes simplex virus (HSV). Ocular Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection develops uveitis and vitritis, but the clinical feature of EBV retinitis is not typical as a viral retinitis. EBV retinitis is rare, and only a few cases of EBV retinitis have been reported. Herein, we describe a case of retinitis with EBV and VZV which were the primary viruses verified by multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

PURPOSE: While there are many known etiologies of choroidal neovascularization (CNV), tuberculosis is not a well-known causative agent. In this case series, we highlight CNV occurring secondary to tuberculous chorioretinitis, its presentation, and its management.
OBSERVATIONS: We retrospectively reviewed the charts and imaging of four patients who presented with presumed tuberculous chorioretinitis and CNV. Three of these patients had signs of intraocular inflammation and were also found to have active macular CNV. The one remaining patient had chorioretinal scars from prior posterior uveitis

BACKGROUND: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the most common congenital viral infection in the United States. Visual and ocular sequelae in adolescents and adults who are congenitally infected with CMV have not been well studied. Better understanding of the long-term visual and ocular sequelae can help with early detection, intervention and appropriate educational accommodations.
METHODS: This study evaluated 237 patients (77 symptomatic, 109 asymptomatic and 51 control) who underwent a series of age-appropriate ophthalmologic, audiologic and neurodevelopmental examinations from 1982 to 2013. The fre

IMPORTANCE: In recent years, the treatment of patients with advanced cutaneous melanoma has undergone substantial changes. Patients can now be offered treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors, which are capable of increasing patient survival. However, these new treatments are associated with immune-related adverse effects that can involve different organ systems, including the eye.
OBSERVATIONS: We describe the case of a patient who received a diagnosis of metastatic cutaneous melanoma and developed melanoma-associated retinopathy with unanticipated fundus findings while receiving treatmen

The eye manifestations of intrauterine infections are multiple, but chorioretinal scars and/or active chorioretinitis are the most frequently reported. When associated with other systemic manifestations of the infection, the diagnosis becomes more obvious, but when eye involvement is the only abnormality, etiology often remains uncertain. We are presenting the case of an 8-year-old female patient whose fundus lesions revealed an unusual choroidoretinopathy, associated with cataract in one eye. Her general examination and her medical history were unremarkable. Blood test for multiple pathogenic
