Chorioretinal scars and visual deprivation are common in children with cochlear implants after congenital cytomegalovirus infection.

AIM: The aim of this study was to compare visual function and ocular characteristics in children with cochlear implants, due to severe hearing impairment caused by the congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection, with control children fitted with cochlear implants due to connexin 26 mutations (Cx26), a genetic cause of hearing impairment. METHODS: We carried out ophthalmological assessments, including visual acuity, ocular alignment, Ocular Motor Score, biomicroscopy and fundus photography, on 26 children with congenital CMV (median age 8.3 years, range 1.4-16.7) and 13 Cx26 controls (median a

Toxoplasma Gondii Infection of Chicken Embryos Causes Retinal Changes and Modulates HSP90B1 Gene Expression: A Promising Ocular Toxoplasmosis Model.

HSP90B1 is a gene that codifies heat shock protein 108 (HSP108) that belongs to a group of proteins induced under stress situation, and it has close relation with the nervous system, especially in the retina. Toxoplasma gondii causes ocular toxoplasmosis that has been associated with a late manifestation of the congenital toxoplasmosis although experimental models show that morphological alterations are already present during embryological development. Here, we used 18 eyes of Gallus domesticus embryos in 7th and 20th embryonic days to establish a model of congenital ocular toxoplasmosis, expe

Real-time and nested polymerase chain reaction in the diagnosis of multifocal serpiginoid choroiditis caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis - a case report.

BACKGROUND: The term multifocal serpiginoid choroiditis (MSC) has been proposed for the infective variant of serpiginous choroiditis (SC) to distinguish it from typical SC believed to be autoimmune related. The role of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTb) in MSC has been studied by conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR). However, the use of real-time PCR (RT-PCR) and nested PCR (N-PCR) in MSC has not been reported. This paper aims to highlight the usefulness of PCR in identifying MTb as a causative agent for MSC leading to its correct treatment with anti-tubercular therapy (ATT). FINDINGS:

Vibration-induced nystagmus in patients with unilateral peripheral vestibular disorders.

BACKGROUND: Current methods of removing organic pollutants from water are becoming ineffective as the world population increases. In this study, a series of biorenewable triblock copolymers with hydrophobic poly(ε-caprolactone) block and hydrophilic poly(l-lactide) blocks were synthesized and tested as agents to remove environmental pollutants from an aqueous solution. The percent of pollutant removed and equilibrium inclusion constants were calculated for the polymers. These values were compared to previously known removal agents for their effectiveness. RESULTS: Triblock copolymer samples r

Molecular identification of bacterial DNA in the chorioretinal scars of chronic granulomatous disease.

PURPOSE: Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is an inherited disorder characterized by defects in phagocyte-derived nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase. It is typically diagnosed in childhood and leads to severe, recurrent bacterial or fungal infections. Chorioretinal lesions are the most common ocular manifestation. We sought to determine whether there are infectious agents in CGD-associated chorioretinopathy. METHODS: Medical records and ocular histopathology from CGD cases from January 1983 to January 2012 at the National Institutes of Health were retrospectively reviewed.

Fundus autofluorescence and colour fundus imaging compared during telemedicine screening in patients with diabetes.

We investigated the use of fundus autofluorescence (FAF) imaging in screening the eyes of patients with diabetes. Images were obtained from 50 patients with type 2 diabetes undergoing telemedicine screening with colour fundus imaging. The colour and FAF images were obtained with a 15.1 megapixel non-mydriatic retinal camera. Colour and FAF images were compared for pathology seen in nonproliferative and proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR and PDR, respectively). A qualitative assessment was made of the ease of detecting early retinopathy changes and the extent of existing retinopathy. The

Toxoplasma gondii: P30 peptides recognition pattern in human toxoplasmosis.

In this study, human sera reactivity against nine peptides derived from the Toxoplasma gondii P30 protein was assessed by ELISA in patients with different clinical forms of toxoplasmosis. Same as has been reported in mice, sera from congenital, ocular and chronic asymptomatic toxoplasmosis patients recognized more strongly peptides from the protein's carboxy-terminus, being peptide 2017 (amino acids 301-320) the one most strongly recognized by sera from patients with ocular toxoplasmosis. Serum samples collected from 13 patients without ocular infection, 13 with inactive chorioretinal scars, 6

Ocular manifestations in chronic granulomatous disease in Saudi Arabia.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is a primary immunodeficiency disease caused by a genetic defect in the NADPH oxidase complex of phagocytic cells. Recent reports indicate that chorioretinal lesions are more common than previously suspected. In this study, ocular findings of CGD patients are described with particular emphasis on chorioretinal lesions as a potentially serious ocular complication of CGD. METHODS: Medical records of CGD patients attending an immunodeficiency clinic at a tertiary care center from January 2004 to December 2006 were reviewed. Patients underwent ful
