Choroidal metastasis as the first sign of small cell lung cancer: A case report.

Metastases in the choroid originating from small cell lung cancer (SCLC) remain rare. The diagnosis of ocular metastases and primary lung tumors in individuals with SCLC can be challenging and time-consuming, particularly when their first symptoms present as ocular. The treatment of patients with ocular metastases of lung cancer is another clinical challenge in terms of primary tumor control and metastasis suppression. The current study presents the case of a 62-year-old man admitted to The Second Hospital of Jilin University (Jilin, China) for blurred vision. Based on subsequent clinical and

Acute phase Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome resistant to corticosteroid therapy in an adult female patient.

Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) syndrome is a rare inflammatory disease that affects more than one system, including ophthalmological, auditory, cutaneous, and neurological systems. VKH syndrome is mostly characterized by panuveitis with serous retinal detachment, headache, hearing loss, vitiligo, and poliosis. Early diagnosis and proper management are crucial to prevent irreversible visual loss and other complications. We present a case report of VKH syndrome in a 29-year-old female patient. Initiation of corticosteroid therapy led to gradual regression of her symptoms. However, after cessation of

Visual outcomes, incidence and risk factors for RPE atrophy in myopic patients with dome-shaped macula and serous retinal detachment.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the visual outcomes, incidence, and risk factors for retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) atrophy in highly myopic patients with dome-shaped macula (DSM) and serous retinal detachment (SRD). METHODS: Baseline and follow-up data were analyzed for visual acuity (VA), myopic classification, spherical equivalent (SE), and SRD presence. Incomplete RPE atrophy is characterized by discontinuous hypertransmission (<250 μm) with an irregular or interrupted RPE band. Persistent SRD was defined as fluid present in all follow-up visits. The primary outcome was VA change over time and i

Acute Posterior Multifocal Placoid Pigment Epitheliopathy: Clinical and Iconographical Aspects of Two Cases.

Acute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy (APMPPE) is a rare inflammatory disorder of the choriocapillaris and retinal pigment epithelium. We report two atypical cases: one with unilateral involvement complicated by serous retinal detachment requiring corticosteroid therapy; the second with bilateral involvement that resolved spontaneously. These observations underscore the clinical heterogeneity of APMPPE and the pivotal role of multimodal imaging, including optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT-angiography (OCT-A), in elucidating its pathophysiology, guiding diagnosis, m

Dynamics of color vision recovery in Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease: a longitudinal study using cone contrast test and adaptive optics imaging.

BACKGROUND: Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease affects visual function, but the recovery process of color vision remains incompletely understood. This study aimed to assess color vision recovery in VKH using cone contrast testing and explore its relationship with cone cell density measured using adaptive optics imaging. METHODS: Twenty-two eyes of 11 patients with VKH were evaluated at baseline (serous retinal detachment resolution) and at 3, 6, and 12 months post-treatment. Cone contrast scores and cone cell density were measured using the ColorDx® CCT-HD™ system and rtx1™ adaptive optics fu

Suprachoroidal and vitreous haemorrhage during a hypertensive crisis as the presenting sign of an unsuspected cilio-choroidal melanoma.

A male patient in his early 60s presented with sudden vision loss in his left eye during a hypertensive emergency. Ophthalmological examination showed serous retinal detachment, vitreous haemorrhage and significant suprachoroidal haemorrhage in the left eye. A post-discharge CT scan report revealed an ill-defined hyperdense structure in the left vitreous chamber, raising concerns for a potential choroidal mass. Subsequent ocular oncology evaluation, including a B-scan 8 weeks after initial assessment, demonstrated a lobulated choroidal elevation characterised by heterogeneous hyperechoic inter

Retinal Pigment Epithelial Tear and Retinal Detachment Following Hypotony After Trabeculectomy: A Case Report.

Hypotony after trabeculectomy (TLE) can lead to choroidal detachment (CD) and maculopathy. We present a case of retinal detachment caused by extensive retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) tears following hypotony following TLE surgery. A 67-year-old man underwent TLE in the left eye for open-angle glaucoma. Postoperatively, intraocular pressure (IOP) remained stable at approximately 10 mmHg. However, after 50 days, the IOP decreased due to aqueous humor leakage, which required several conjunctival sutures. CD occurred on day 87. On day 108, retinal detachment was detected in the inferior retina of

Predictive factors for the development of macular neovascularization in chronic central serous chorioretinopathy.

This single-center, retrospective study analyzed the development of macular neovascularization (MNV) in patients with chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) during a treatment-free follow-up period and the factors associated with its development. In total, 236 patients (280 eyes, 149 males and 87 females, mean age 55.3 ± 13.9 years) with treatment-naïve CSCR with no MNV detected on multimodal imaging who were observed for > 6 months were assessed. The association between age, sex, the presence of MNV, central choroidal thickness (CCT), the presence of the double-layer sign (DLS), and

Current advances in dome-shaped macula and associated conditions.

Dome-shaped macula (DSM) is a distinctive anatomical entity characterized by an inward convexity of the macula, initially described in highly myopic eyes within posterior staphyloma, but is now recognized as occurring across a broader spectrum of refractive conditions, including mild myopia and even emmetropia. Since its initial description in 2008, advances in imaging technologies and longitudinal studies have significantly improved our understanding of DSM. We analyzed the recent literature, focusing on publications from the last 10 years. DSM affects about 0.2 % of the general population, w
