Assessment of Social Vulnerability in Pediatric Head and Neck Cancer Care and Prognosis in the United States.

IMPORTANCE: Prior investigations in social determinants of health (SDoH) in pediatric head and neck cancer (HNC) have only considered a narrow scope of HNCs, SDoH, and geography while lacking inquiry into the interrelational association of SDoH with disparities in clinical pediatric HNC. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the association of SDoH with disparities in HNC among children and adolescents and to assess which specific aspects of SDoH are most associated with disparities in dynamic and regional sociodemographic contexts. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study includ

Image quality assessment of retinal fundus photographs for diabetic retinopathy in the machine learning era: a review.

This study aimed to evaluate the image quality assessment (IQA) and quality criteria employed in publicly available datasets for diabetic retinopathy (DR). A literature search strategy was used to identify relevant datasets, and 20 datasets were included in the analysis. Out of these, 12 datasets mentioned performing IQA, but only eight specified the quality criteria used. The reported quality criteria varied widely across datasets, and accessing the information was often challenging. The findings highlight the importance of IQA for AI model development while emphasizing the need for clear and

A Straightforward Bifurcation Pattern-Based Fundus Image Registration Method.

Fundus image registration is crucial in eye disease examination, as it enables the alignment of overlapping fundus images, facilitating a comprehensive assessment of conditions like diabetic retinopathy, where a single image's limited field of view might be insufficient. By combining multiple images, the field of view for retinal analysis is extended, and resolution is enhanced through super-resolution imaging. Moreover, this method facilitates patient follow-up through longitudinal studies. This paper proposes a straightforward method for fundus image registration based on bifurcations, which

Identifying the mechanism of missingness for unspecified diabetic retinopathy disease severity in the electronic health record: an IRIS® Registry analysis.

Observational studies of diabetic retinopathy (DR) using electronic health record data often determine disease severity using International Classification of Disease (ICD) codes. We investigated the mechanism of missingness for DR severity based on ICD coding using the American Academy of Ophthalmology IRIS® Registry. We included all patient encounters in the registry with a DR ICD-9 or ICD-10 code between January 1, 2014 and June 30, 2021. Demographic, clinical, and practice-level characteristics were compared between encounters with specified and unspecified disease severity. Practices were

Clinical aspects of malarial retinopathy: a critical review.

This review will provide a better understanding of a set of signs known as malarial retinopathy. The discovery of this retinopathy in association with cerebral malaria is important because it best distinguishes patients with true cerebral malaria from those with coma due to other causes and incidental Plasmodium falciparum parasitemia. Identifying a comatose patient with malarial retinopathy increases the likelihood of an accurate severe or cerebral malaria diagnosis. As the World Health Organization does not specify that malarial retinopathy is one of the factors included in determining a cer

Introduction of structured record keeping in age-related macular degeneration: a before and after study.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Structured record keeping improves documentation in age-related macular degeneration; however, it may have a more limited effect on the management decisions of a group of already highly trained clinicians, especially in the context of other well-embedded clinical decision support tools. BACKGROUND: Structured record keeping has been associated with a range of advantages including improved history taking and communication, reduced number of unnecessary referrals, and enhanced diagnostic accuracy. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of a structured record keeping

MF-Net: Multi-Scale Information Fusion Network for CNV Segmentation in Retinal OCT Images.

Choroid neovascularization (CNV) is one of the blinding ophthalmologic diseases. It is mainly caused by new blood vessels growing in choroid and penetrating Bruch's membrane. Accurate segmentation of CNV is essential for ophthalmologists to analyze the condition of the patient and specify treatment plan. Although many deep learning-based methods have achieved promising results in many medical image segmentation tasks, CNV segmentation in retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) images is still very challenging as the blur boundary of CNV, large morphological differences, speckle noise, and o

Visual cycle modulators versus placebo or observation for the prevention and treatment of geographic atrophy due to age-related macular degeneration.

BACKGROUND: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a highly prevalent condition in an ever-increasing elderly population. Although insidious in the early stages, advanced AMD (neovascular and atrophic forms) can cause significant visual disability and economic burden on health systems worldwide. The most common form, geographic atrophy, has no effective treatment to date, whereas neovascular AMD can be treated with intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) injections. Geographic atrophy has a slow disease progression and patients tend to have preserved central vision

TRPM3_miR-204: a complex locus for eye development and disease.

First discovered in a light-sensitive retinal mutant of Drosophila, the transient receptor potential (TRP) superfamily of non-selective cation channels serve as polymodal cellular sensors that participate in diverse physiological processes across the animal kingdom including the perception of light, temperature, pressure, and pain. TRPM3 belongs to the melastatin sub-family of TRP channels and has been shown to function as a spontaneous calcium channel, with permeability to other cations influenced by alternative splicing and/or non-canonical channel activity. Activators of TRPM3 channels incl

Expression and Roles of Teneurins in Zebrafish.

The teneurins, also known as Ten-m/Odz, are highly conserved type II transmembrane glycoproteins widely expressed throughout the nervous system. Functioning as dimers, these large cell-surface adhesion proteins play a key role in regulating neurodevelopmental processes such as axon targeting, synaptogenesis and neuronal wiring. Synaptic specificity is driven by molecular interactions, which can occur either in a trans-homophilic manner between teneurins or through a trans-heterophilic interaction across the synaptic cleft between teneurins and other cell-adhesion molecules, such as latrophilin

Mobile Mammography Participation Among Medically Underserved Women: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Although breast cancer deaths have declined, the mortality rate among women from medically underserved communities is disproportionally high. Screening mammography is the most effective tool for detecting breast cancer in its early stages, yet many women from medically underserved communities do not have adequate access to screening mammograms. Mobile mammography may be able to bridge this gap by providing screening mammograms at no cost or low cost and delivering services to women in their own neighborhoods, thus eliminating cost and transportation barriers. The objective of thi

Different lasers and techniques for proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a chronic progressive disease of the retinal microvasculature associated with prolonged hyperglycaemia. Proliferative DR (PDR) is a sight-threatening complication of DR and is characterised by the development of abnormal new vessels in the retina, optic nerve head or anterior segment of the eye. Argon laser photocoagulation has been the gold standard for the treatment of PDR for many years, using regimens evaluated by the Early Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS). Over the years, there have been modifications of the technique and introductio
