The prognosis of going blind is very stressful for patients diagnosed with "glaucoma". Worries and fear of losing independence is a constant mental burden, with secondary risks of depression and social isolation. But stress is not only a result of glaucoma but also a possible cause (risk factor). This should not be surprising, given that chronic stress can trigger "psychosomatic" organ dysfunctions anywhere in the body. Why should the organ "eye" be an exception? Indeed, glaucoma patients often suspect that severe emotional stress caused their visual field loss or "foggy vision". The hypothesi

BACKGROUND: In severely compromised and vascularized high-risk eyes, the Boston keratoprosthesis procedure is often the last treatment option. The transparency of the optics is not impaired by endothelial immune reactions.
METHODS: This review article discusses relevant literature as well as our own data and experiences with the Boston keratoprosthesis in high-risk eyes. The relevant complications as well as the postoperative management are discussed.
RESULTS: In more than 60% of the high-risk eyes a long-term increase in visual acuity can be achieved. Keratoprosthesis retention rates show a

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) is a granulomatous-necrotic systemic vasculitis with a lesion of predominantly the upper and lower respiratory tracts at the onset of the disease (vasculitis, accompanied by granulomatous inflammation), and subsequently renal (glomerulonephritis). In addition, GPA may manifest as inflammation of small arteries and veins. Despite many years of study of this disease, the etiology of GPA remains unknown. The present case is about a 47-year-old female, who had been suffering from necrotizing scleritis, corneal ulcer, and secondary glaucoma in both eyes for 3

The eye is regarded as an immune privileged site. Since the presence of a vasculature would impair vision, the vasculature of the eye is located outside of the central light path. As a result, many regions of the eye evolved mechanisms to deliver immune cells to sites of dysgenesis, injury, or in response to the many age-related pathologies. While the purpose of these immune responses is reparative or protective, cytokines released by immune cells compromise visual acuity by inducing inflammation and fibrosis. The response to traumatic or pathological injury is distinct in different regions of

Glaucoma is an optic neuropathy in which the primary risk factor is increased intraocular pressure (IOP), attributed to increased resistance to trabecular outflow of aqueous humor (AH). This resistance is believed to result from trabecular degeneration secondary to chronic oxidative stress and cellular senescence but may also involve inflammatory mechanisms whose roles are little known. In fact, inflammatory processes play a major role in the pathophysiology of glaucoma to varying degrees, affecting all structures of the eye, including the ocular surface, the anterior and posterior segments, a

There are several available options for the demanding surgical correction of paediatric aphakia without sufficient capsular support. The literature suggests the implantation of a transscleral fixated posterior chamber-intraocular lens (PCIOL), an intrascleral fixated PCIOL, an iris-sutured intraocular lens (IOL), or an anterior chamber iris-claw IOL. We searched for reports on the management of paediatric aphakia in case of inadequate capsular support that delineated the diverse surgical approaches and their postoperative results. Analysis demonstrated that different complications can be encou
