An unusual case of eosinophilic uveitis in a cat.

An 8-year-old female spayed domestic short-haired cat was examined for recurrent unilateral anterior uveitis of 5 month's duration. No underlying cause was found on infectious disease screening. The cat also had a 4-year history of allergic or immune-mediated skin disease that was controlled with corticosteroid injections followed by long-term oral cyclosporine therapy. Medical management with frequent topical anti-inflammatory drugs (prednisolone acetate 1% suspension, diclofenac 0.1% solution) controlled the intraocular inflammation; however, the uveitis would relapse when therapy was discon

Comparing the Results of Vitrectomy and Sclerectomy in a Patient with Nanophthalmic Uveal Effusion Syndrome.

Nanophthalmic uveal effusion syndrome (UES) is an extremely rare idiopathic disease characterized by a short axial length of the eye, extremely thick sclera and choroid. These structural changes can lead to spontaneous serous detachment of the retina and peripheral choroid. There are many other causes of UES such as trauma, inflammation, cataract surgery, glaucoma, or retinal detachment. UES is classified into three types. All are characterized by a relapsing-remitting clinical course. The loss of visual acuity ranges from mild to very severe, depending on macular involvement. Changes of the r

Implantable self-aligning fiber-optic optomechanical devices for in vivo intraocular pressure-sensing in artificial cornea.

Artificial cornea is an effective treatment of corneal blindness. Yet, intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements for glaucoma monitoring remain an urgent unmet need. Here, we present the integration of a fiber-optic Fabry-Perot pressure sensor with an FDA-approved keratoprosthesis for real-time IOP measurements using a novel strategy based on optical-path self-alignment with micromagnets. Additionally, an alternative noncontact sensor-interrogation approach is demonstrated using a bench-top optical coherence tomography system. We show stable pressure readings with low baseline drift (<2.8 mm Hg)

A retrospective histologic study of 140 cases of clinically significant equine ocular disorders.

Ocular diseases are an important category in equine medicine; however, most articles regarding histologic ocular lesions in horses are exclusive to a specific condition and do not provide a complete review of clinically significant ocular disease frequency in a diagnostic laboratory. We reviewed sections of equine eyes from 140 cases (98 enucleations [biopsies] and 42 autopsies) with clinically relevant ocular alterations at 2 diagnostic centers in the United States. The most common primary conditions were non-traumatic keratitis (36), equine recurrent uveitis (ERU; 31), traumatic injuries (22

Perioperative Management of Dropped Lenses: Anterior and Posterior Segment Considerations and Treatment Options.

Posterior migration of lens fragments into the vitreous cavity is a rare complication of cataract surgery. Sight-threatening sequelae, including persistent intraocular inflammation, secondary glaucoma, corneal edema, cystoid macular edema and retinal detachment, can occur as a result of this complication. As such, judicious intra-operative and post-operative management must be employed to reduce the risk of complications in the setting of retained lens fragments. This often requires the collaboration of anterior and posterior segment surgeons.

[Uveitic glaucoma in Behçet's disease: When everything gets complicated].

INTRODUCTION: Behçet's disease is a systemic disease of unknown etiology. Its ocular manifestations are multiple and polymorphic, with uveitis at the top of the list. Classically, uveitis in Behçet's disease does not cause elevation of intraocular pressure. However, this may be found in 10 to 20% of cases, secondary to trabeculitis, trabecular obstruction by inflammatory cells, anterior or posterior synechiae, or induced by prolonged use of corticosteroids. Its occurrence is a major complication, the management of which is especially delicate when glaucoma occurs. The purpose of this study was
