Optical coherence tomography angiography as a tool for diagnosis and monitoring of sickle cell related eye disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Sickle cell retinopathy (SCR) is an ocular manifestation of sickle cell disease (SCD). In SCR abnormal sickling of erythrocytes is associated with sight-threatening complications such as neovascularisation, vitreous haemorrhage, maculopathy and retinal detachment. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a novel imaging modality enabling non-invasive assessment of retinal vasculature. This systematic review provides an up-to-date evaluation of the role of OCTA in SCR diagnosis and management. We searched MEDLINE/PubMed, Cumulated Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL)

Penetrating orbital injury by a nine-centimetre lead sinker.

A male in his early 40s presented with a penetrating orbital injury after a nine-centimetre lead sinker was propelled into his right orbit while fishing. He reported pain, ptosis and visual acuity reduced to light perception. X-rays, preferred over CT due to metallic artefacts, revealed the sinker in the inferior orbital fissure with an intact eyeball. Initial surgical extraction attempts triggered a severe vagal response, necessitating endoscopic navigation for safe removal. Postoperatively, despite an intact globe, he developed vitreous haemorrhage and retinal detachment, requiring vitrectom

Associations between obstructive sleep apnoea and the development and severity of retinal vein occlusion.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Emerging research suggests obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) as a potential risk factor for retinal vein occlusion (RVO), but the impact of sex, race, and ethnicity, and the role of OSA in RVO progression, remains unclear. This study explored demographic differences in the association between OSA and RVO and compared the severity of RVO in patients with and without OSA. SUBJECTS/METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analysed aggregated, de-identified electronic health record data of US patients. Adults who received ophthalmological services were grouped by baseline RVO

Macular ischaemia after inadvertent perforation of the eyeball and intravitreal injection of anesthetic agents during retrobulbar anaesthesia.

Perforation of the eyeball during retrobulbar anesthesia is rarely reported. A case of inadvertent ocular perforation during retrobulbar anesthesia in cataract surgery is presented. Retinal complications and follow up after six months are described. A 58-year-old man presented with vision loss following cataract surgery on his right eye by phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation under retrobulbar anaesthesia performed one week earlier. Visual acuity was 0.05. Fundus examination revealed a vitreous haemorrhage in the lower area. A rounded haemorrhage was present next to the lower

Combined hamartoma of the retina and retinal pigment epithelium: unusual rapid progression and early surgical intervention.

We report a case of a young woman who presented with a vitreous haemorrhage associated with a combined hamartoma of the retina and retinal pigment epithelium (CHRRPE). During her clinical course, while the vitreous haemorrhage resolved, the lesion enlarged with a worsening epiretinal membrane. The patient's visual acuity reduced from 0.06 to 0.4 logMAR (Snellen equivalent of 6/7.5 to 6/30) with worsening metamorphopsia over a 13-week period. She shortly underwent pars plana vitrectomy with a membrane peel with an improved anatomical and visual outcome. The case presented shows an uncommon prese

Sensitivity and utility of ultra-wide field imaging for the detection of peripheral retinal breaks in a large Irish tertiary referral centre.

BACKGROUND: Ultra-wide field imaging (UWFI) is an invaluable tool for screening, documentation, and follow-up of retinal pathology. However, despite widespread use, the optimal image acquisition strategy and accuracy for detecting potentially-treatable peripheral retinal breaks is not fully known. We report our data from Dublin, Ireland. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was carried out on all consecutive patients undergoing treatment of peripheral retinal breaks in the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital from March 2022 to August 2024. Patients with pre-operative UWFI using Optos California

Sudden Loss of Vision Following Cosmetic Autologous Fat Transfer.

Cosmetic tourism and facial aesthetic procedures are increasing in popularity worldwide, with patients often seeking low-cost interventions abroad. Autologous fat transfer (AFT) is commonly performed for periorbital rejuvenation and carries a risk of rare but severe ophthalmic complications. We describe a case of unilateral visual loss following periorbital AFT, in which the underlying mechanism was scleral penetration leading to vitreous haemorrhage, retinal incarceration, and extraocular muscle entrapment. Surgical management with pars plana vitrectomy restored partial vision, although motil

Baicalin affects the progression of diabetic retinopathy through the RAGE/PXDN/PI3K/AKT pathway.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of blindness-related eye diseases in adults. The pathogenesis of DR is attributed to the excessive proliferation of microvessels, which leads to vitreous haemorrhage and retinal traction, thereby significantly damaging the patient's vision. In this study, we investigated the role and molecular mechanism of Peroxidasin (PXDN) and the active ingredient baicalin (BAI) of traditional Chinese medicine in regulating the senescence and pathological angiogenesis of human retinal microvascular endothelial cells (HRMECs) to identify the key gene
