Suprachoroidal and vitreous haemorrhage during a hypertensive crisis as the presenting sign of an unsuspected cilio-choroidal melanoma.

A male patient in his early 60s presented with sudden vision loss in his left eye during a hypertensive emergency. Ophthalmological examination showed serous retinal detachment, vitreous haemorrhage and significant suprachoroidal haemorrhage in the left eye. A post-discharge CT scan report revealed an ill-defined hyperdense structure in the left vitreous chamber, raising concerns for a potential choroidal mass. Subsequent ocular oncology evaluation, including a B-scan 8 weeks after initial assessment, demonstrated a lobulated choroidal elevation characterised by heterogeneous hyperechoic inter

Paediatric Neoplastic Uveitis Masquerade Syndromes.

Paediatric neoplastic uveitis masquerade syndrome (UMS) is a rare but serious condition in which intraocular malignancies mimic inflammatory uveitis. Children may present with symptoms of intraocular inflammation such as redness, pain, light sensitivity, and blurred vision. The diagnostic challenge is compounded by the difficulty of examining younger patients and the absence of systemic warning signs. Accurate diagnosis is essential because the therapies for uveitis and ocular neoplasms vary fundamentally, and delayed recognition can be life-threatening.Although the most frequent neoplastic ma

LncPrep + 96kb inhibits ovarian fibrosis by upregulating prolyl oligopeptidase expression.

BACKGROUND: Cemented total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a safe and common procedure. In rare cases life threatening bone cement implantation syndrome (BCIS) may occur, which is commonly caused by pulmonary embolism (PE). CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the rare case of a 70-year old patient who underwent an elective total hip replacement. Before surgery he was diagnosed with underlying systemic indolent mastocytosis, a rare pathological disorder that may result in anaphylaxis after massive systemic mast cell activation. Triggers may be IgE-mediated, direct mast cell activation, or unclear. Some p

RETRACTED: Effect of transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy versus 20-G vitrectomy on surgical wound closure in patients: A meta-analysis.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

A meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the impact of transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy (TSV) over 20 G vitrectomy on wound healing, as well as the requirements for closing the wound in order to treat vitreoretinal diseases. Among the 500 cases who had been treated with vitrectomy to September 2023, 250 were treated by transconjunctiva without vitrectomy and 250 were treated with 20 G vitrectomy. The odds ratio (OR) and mean difference (MD) of 95% confidence interval (CI) were computed to evaluate the influence of wound opening and closing on vitrectomy diseases. The evaluation of vitr

Associations between lipid abnormalities and diabetic retinopathy across a large United States national database.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: While dyslipidaemia has been suggested as a potential risk factor for diabetic retinopathy (DR), previous studies have reported conflicting findings. This study aimed to better characterize the relationship between abnormal serum levels of various lipid markers and the risk of the development and progression of DR. SUBJECTS/METHODS: This retrospective cohort study utilized a United States national database of electronic medical records. Adults with a history of type 2 diabetes mellitus without type 1 diabetes mellitus were divided into cohorts based on the presence of a

Association of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors and the risk of retinal vascular occlusion: A real-world retrospective cohort study in Taiwan.

AIMS: Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) are proposed to alleviate the development of inflammatory eye diseases. However, the association between SGLT2i and retinal vascular occlusion remains unclear. Therefore, this study aims to explore the effects of SGLT2i on the incidence of retinal vascular occlusion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analysed electronic medical records data from the largest multi-institutional database in Taiwan. Individuals who initiated SGLT2is and dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitors (DPP4is) between 2016 and 2019 were included in

Retinal abnormalities in a patient with cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita.

Cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita is a rare congenital vascular malformation characterised by cutaneous vascular abnormalities, typically diagnosed at birth or in the early postnatal period. Although typically benign, this disease is associated with other systemic abnormalities, including rare ocular alterations, such as congenital glaucoma, cataracts and retinopathy. This manuscript describes a female infant, who presented with generalised livedo reticularis, a band of alopecia and cutaneous atrophy in the temporal region above the coronal suture. The patient was diagnosed with cutis m

Incidence and progression of diabetic retinopathy in patients treated with glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists versus sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors: A population-based cohort study.

AIM: Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP1RA) and sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) are both recommended for patients with diabetes, yet their effects on the development or progression of diabetic retinopathy (DR) are largely unknown. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, data were collected from a nationwide database. Patients with diabetes who initiated treatment with a GLP1RA or SGLT2i between 1 May 2016 and 31 December 2017, were identified. Patients were divided into those with or without a previous diagnosis of DR and then categorized into the GLP1RA an

Managing vitreoretinal complications in uveal melanoma: Surgical treatment and practical considerations.

BACKGROUND: In the past few decades, the primary management for uveal melanoma has evolved from enucleation to eye-preserving treatments. However, despite achieving a high rate of local tumour control, complications following eye-preserving treatments still occur and are partly responsible for functional loss and secondary enucleation. METHODS: A literature review by a broad international panel. RESULTS: We summarised the current literature on utilizing vitreoretinal (VR) surgery for managing the complications of uveal melanoma. We also provided insights from the authors' personal experience

A Rare Case of Combined Direct Retinal Involvement and Suspected Bing-Neel Syndrome in a Patient With Waldenstrom's Macroglobulinemia.

A 75-year-old male with a history of Waldenström macroglobulinemia (WM), diagnosed in 2022, presented with several months of progressive blurred vision and floaters in his right eye, impairing his ability to drive, particularly at night. The ophthalmologic evaluation revealed vitreous haemorrhage and sub-retinal pigment epithelial lesions in the superonasal and inferonasal quadrants of the right eye. A pars plana vitrectomy with vitreous biopsy was performed, which was consistent with ocular involvement by WM. The patient underwent orbital radiotherapy. Shortly after completing radiotherapy, h
