Diversity of Layer 3 Pyramidal Neuron Properties Across Areas of the Primate Neocortex.

Impaired activation of cortical circuits might contribute to working memory deficits in schizophrenia. In this disorder, layer 3 pyramidal neurons (L3PNs) of the prefrontal cortex (PFC), primary visual cortex (V1), and posterior parietal cortex (PPC)-3 cortical areas essential for working memory-display alterations that may impair network activity. We review evidence suggesting that L3PN morphology and physiology differ significantly across the PFC, PPC, and V1 in primates. These differences are much less pronounced in rodents, suggesting a primate-enhanced regional variability that may be the

Neural mechanisms underlying metacognitive processes in sequential decision-making.

Self-monitoring in decision-making is a hallmark of self-improvement in cognitive processes. To enhance outcomes in future decisions, individuals must accurately assess the correctness of prior choices and apply the information to control subsequent decisions. Although metacognition encompasses monitoring and control functions, the neural mechanisms underlying these processes and their relationships remain unclear. Furthermore, while the prefrontal cortex (PFC) is implicated in both functions, their distinct neural substrates and interrelations require further elucidation. In this study, we em

EEG-defined differences in functional networks following beta-band transcranial alternating current stimulation in patients with disorders of consciousness: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Severe disruption of cortico-thalamocortical circuits underlies disorders of consciousness (DOC). Beta-band (20 Hz) transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) can be used to probe frontal oscillatory synchrony, yet its potential to acutely modulate large-scale network dynamics in DOC is unknown. METHODS: We applied 20 Hz tACS (1 mA) for 30 min over the frontal cortex (F3 and F4, International 10-20 system) in 28 patients with DOC. Offline functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was used to quantify hemoglobin (HbO)-based functional connectivity (FC) and graph-theore

Safety and feasibility of accelerated deep transcranial magnetic stimulation for stimulant use disorder: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Stimulant use disorder (StUD) remains a major public health concern with limited treatment options and high attrition. Deep transcranial magnetic stimulation (dTMS) targeting the medial prefrontal and anterior cingulate cortices may modulate circuits involved in craving and control. This pilot study evaluated the safety, tolerability, and feasibility of accelerated dTMS (adTMS) using the H7 coil in individuals with moderate to severe StUD. METHODS: In this open-label, single-arm feasibility trial, participants received 30 sessions of high-frequency (20 Hz) adTMS using the H7 coil

Unilateral nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy associated with obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome: a case report.

BACKGROUND: This report describes a case of obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) associated with nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). NAION is an optic neuropathy characterized by painless vision loss, visual field defects, and optic disc edema. It results from hypoperfusion of the short posterior ciliary arteries, leading to acute ischemia and structural and functional impairment of the optic nerve, which ultimately manifests as blurred vision or blindness. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 59-year-old Han Chinese male who presented with a 6-day hist

Ciliary epithelium detachment during lens subluxation extraction surgery after blunt eye trauma: A case report.

PURPOSE: To document the ciliary epithelial detachment identified intraoperatively during lens-subluxation extraction in a patient with blunt eye trauma. METHOD: A 60-year-old Chinese man presented 14 days after right eye blunt trauma with blurry vision, elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), temporal shallowing of the anterior chamber, and iris bombé 1. To relieve pupillary-block-related IOP elevation, phacoemulsification was performed. Intraoperatively, the lens capsule ruptured, and portions of the nucleus and cortex dropped into the vitreous cavity. The surgeon switched to a cutter to remov

Functional connectivity and treatment response in obesity and eating disorders: Current evidence and empirical data.

Alterations in large-scale brain networks have been reported in obesity (OB) and eating disorders (ED), but their relevance to treatment outcomes remains unclear. We reviewed evidence on neurobiological predictors of treatment outcome in ED and OB and present preliminary empirical analyses exploring baseline rsFC differences between individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN), obesity with comorbid ED (OB + ED), and obesity without ED (OB - ED) and healthy controls (HC), and examining whether these connectivity differences are associated with treatment outcome in the clinical groups. Comparison of raw-signal, feature-based and hybrid representations for machine-learning classification of retinal diseases from pattern electroretinography.

Pattern electroretinography (PERG) is a non-invasive test of macular and retinal ganglion cell function, but its low amplitude and inter-subject variability limit its diagnostic use. This study compares three representations of the transient PERG waveform for the detection of six retinal and optic nerve conditions - Birdshot chorioretinopathy, cone-rod dystrophy, hereditary optic atrophy, macular dystrophy, retinitis pigmentosa and Stargardt disease - against healthy controls, using the publicly available PERG-IOBA dataset. Giant Cell Arteritis in Ophthalmology - Current Treatment Options. A Review.

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a  systemic granulomatous vasculitis of medium and large-sized arteries, which represents an ophthalmic emergency because of the risk of sudden, severe and often irreversible loss of vision. Its most important ocular manifestation is arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy; less frequent manifestations include central retinal artery occlusion, cilioretinal artery occlusion, posterior ischemic optic neuropathy, choroidal ischemia and ocular motor nerve palsies. Giant cell arteritis should be actively considered in every patient over 50 years of age presenting

Transorbital sonography reveals retrobulbar optic nerve neuroaxonal changes in multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: The optic nerve (ON), as an extension of the central nervous system, reflects multiple sclerosis (MS) pathological processes. Transorbital sonography (TOS) is emerging as a novel technique to detect ON changes. Our aim was to investigate retrobulbar ON morphometric changes in MS and their relationship with prior history of optic neuritis. METHODS: 122 MS subjects were enrolled, 68 with and 54 without history of optic neuritis. ON diameters without and with sheath were measured at 3 mm (OND3 and ONSD3) and 5 mm (ONSD5) posterior to the optic disc; myelination index (MI=ONSD3/ONSD5)

Reduced hypothalamic [3H]PK11195 binding in Lewis rats after chronic high-intensity interval training.

BACKGROUND: Exercise has emerged as a potential adjunctive intervention for mood-, trauma-, anxiety-, and addictive disorders, partly through effects on neuroimmune signaling. However, it remains unclear whether chronic high-intensity interval training (HIIT) alters translocator protein 18 kDa (TSPO)-associated neuroimmune activity across brain regions. This study examined the effects of chronic HIIT on [3H]PK11195 binding in male and female Lewis rats. METHODS: Thirty-one Lewis rats were assigned to either a 6-week HIIT treadmill regimen or a sedentary control condition. Twenty-four hours af

Characterizing gradients of functional connectome underpinning rumination and their alteration in depression.

As a prominent psychopathological process of major depressive disorder (MDD), rumination's brain underpinnings remain unclear. Emerging studies have highlighted that the brain is organized along several macroscale gradients, which could serve as a powerful framework for better understanding how the functional connectome underlies rumination. In this study, we leveraged two datasets (Rum-Beijing and Rum-MDD) to characterize the gradient structure during an active ruminative state. Rum-Beijing consisted of 40 healthy controls (HC) who underwent 3 repetitive scans, while Rum-MDD consisted of 45 p

Moxifloxacin-induced Abducens Nerve Palsy: A Rare Neurological Complication During Mycobacterium avium Complex Lung Disease Treatment.

Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) lung disease requires prolonged multidrug therapy. We report the case of an 80-year-old woman with MAC lung disease who developed an isolated right abducens nerve palsy after approximately nine months of treatment with moxifloxacin, azithromycin, and ethambutol. The patient presented with horizontal diplopia, and ophthalmological evaluation confirmed sixth cranial nerve palsy. Although ethambutol-induced optic neuropathy was initially considered, clinical findings were not consistent with this diagnosis. Given the temporal relationship with moxifloxacin exposu

Nasopharyngeal diffuse large b-cell lymphoma in a teenage presenting with cavernous sinus syndrome: A case report.

Primary lymphoma of the nasopharynx is uncommon and is more commonly seen as an association with other primary pathologies. Nasopharyngeal lymphoma is an aggressive tumor and can affect all age groups but is more commonly seen in middle-aged and older individuals. Majority of these tumors belong to the non-Hodgkin's group. Cavernous sinus syndrome (CSS) is a rare but severe complication indicating advanced aggressive stage of disease with direct extension of tumor into the cavernous sinus. Our patient is a young teenage 18-years old presented to emergency department with the symptoms of left j

Anatomical-Persistent Synergy Mamba for Joint Pre-to-Postoperative CT Synthesis and Multi-structure Segmentation in Orbital Decompression Surgery.

Thyroid Eye Disease (TED) often causes proptosis and optic nerve compression, and orbital decompression surgery is commonly performed to relieve these symptoms. However, postoperative anatomical changes are highly nonlinear and patient-specific due to bone removal and orbital content displacement, which makes reliable preoperative prediction both critical and challenging. Existing methods for pre- to postoperative medical image generation often overlook an important clinical prior that, although surgery induces local structural changes, the overall anatomy of the same patient remains largely c

Metabolic and Immunometabolic Neuroprotection in Glaucoma: Mitochondrial Dysfunction, Neuroinflammation, and Emerging Therapeutic Strategies.

Glaucoma is increasingly recognized as a multifactorial neurodegenerative optic neuropathy in which intraocular pressure (IOP) is one of several stress amplifiers rather than a sufficient etiological explanation. Vascular dysregulation, mitochondrial and metabolic vulnerability, oxidative stress, excitotoxicity, glial dysregulation, and persistent neuroimmune activation can converge on retinal ganglion cell (RGC) and optic nerve injury. This broader framework is particularly relevant to normal-tension glaucoma (NTG), which represents a large proportion of primary open-angle glaucoma in Asian p
