Progression of intermittent exotropia in surgical and non-surgical patients: a retrospective cohort study.

PURPOSE: Intermittent exotropia (IXT) is a common form of childhood strabismus, and greater exodeviation or poorer control at presentation are known factors influencing the decision to pursue surgery. However, existing studies have not tracked pre-operative progression longitudinally or directly compared these changes between patients who undergo surgery and nonsurgical controls. This study aimed to compare the clinical features and pre-operative progression of IXT between surgically and nonsurgically managed children matched by duration of follow-up. METHODS: The medical records of patients

Interocular symmetry of ocular rigidity and related ocular parameters in isometropia.

PURPOSE: Driven by scleral stiffness, ocular rigidity (OR) is emerging as a critical factor in refractive development. Although a common assumption is that OR is symmetric in a healthy individual's eyes, empirical data remains scarce. This study directly tests this assumption by quantifying intereye OR differences in healthy, isometropic subjects. METHODS: Isometropia was defined as intereye differences in spherical equivalent refraction (SER) of <0.50 diopters (D) and axial length (AL) of <0.15 mm. OR was measured using a validated method based on video-rate optical coherence tomography imag

Large Language Model-Generated Patient Education Materials in Pediatric Ophthalmology: A Scoping Review.

Effective management of pediatric ophthalmic conditions such as myopia, amblyopia, and strabismus depend on caregivers understanding patient education materials (PEMs). However, many existing resources exceed recommended grade 8 reading levels. This review maps AI-generated PEMs in pediatric ophthalmology, summarizes reported outcomes across key educational domains, and identifies barriers and opportunities for clinical integration. Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, a search of Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, and Scopus (January 2015-July 2025) identified studies evaluating LLM-generated PEMs in pediatri

Association of Age and Spherical Equivalent With Differences in Cycloplegic Refractive Effects Between Cyclopentolate and Atropine.

PURPOSE: Amblyopia and strabismus are common visual impairments linked to functional and social consequences in children. In this retrospective study, we compared the cycloplegic effects of two cycloplegic eye drops, cyclopentolate and atropine, and examined whether age and initial spherical equivalent (SE) influenced these effects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed electronic medical records from Kozawa Eye Hospital and Diabetes Center between 2001 and 2021. The primary outcome was the difference in SE between atropine and cyclopentolate (atropine minus cyclopentolate). As b

Comparative Efficacy of Medial Rectus Plication Versus Resection for Exotropia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Medial rectus resection has long been regarded as the standard muscle-strengthening procedure for the surgical management of exotropia. More recently, medial rectus plication has emerged as a vessel-sparing alternative that preserves the anterior ciliary circulation and may offer additional surgical advantages. However, the comparative efficacy of these two procedures remains uncertain. This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to compare the short-term clinical outcomes of medial rectus plication and medial rectus resection in patients undergoing surgery for exotropia. The review

Superior extraconal orbital fat hyperintensityin pediatric population: a potential diagnostic pitfall.

BACKGROUND: With the increasing use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in children, radiologists frequently encounter incidental findings that may mimic pathology. One such underrecognized finding is T2-weighted hyperintensity in the superior extraconal orbital fat, which is occasionally mistaken for an infiltrative or neoplastic process. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to characterize the imaging appearance, prevalence, and clinical associations of superior extraconal orbital fat T2 hyperintensity in pediatric MRI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of 143 pediatric pat

New Neuroimaging Findings in Enoyl-CoA Hydratase Short-Chain 1 (ECHS1) Deficiency.

Enoyl-CoA hydratase short-chain 1 (ECHS1) variants are among the most common causes of Leigh syndrome. A five-year-old boy with ECHS1 deficiency initially presented with acute encephalopathy during the neonatal period. The patient had a high serum lactate level and a normal lactate/pyruvate ratio. Diffusion-weighted imaging showed reduced diffusion in the peri-rolandic subcortical white matter on day 3 and in the entire cortex and subcortical white matter on day 7. The patient subsequently presented with poor feeding, hypotonia, nystagmus, cerebellar ataxia, hearing loss, and strabismus. At on

Surgical Outcomes of Intermittent Exotropia in Adults: A Systematic Review.

Adult intermittent exotropia (IXT) is less well studied than paediatric IXT, yet counselling is challenging due to postoperative exodrift, diplopia risk, and differing functional expectations. This systematic review synthesised surgical outcomes for adult (≥18 years) IXT. A Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020-guided systematic review of PubMed/MEDLINE was performed using two searches ("surgical" AND "outcomes" AND "exotropia"; "surgery" AND "intermittent exotropia"), limited to English-language human studies published within the last 10 years. Role of lifestyle modifications in glaucoma: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that lead to irreversible damage to the optic nerve and gradual vision loss. Although it can occur at any age, it is most commonly seen in people over 40. Globally, around 60.5 million people are currently affected, and this number is expected to rise to over 110 million by 2040. Often called the "silent thief of sight", glaucoma typically progresses without noticeable symptoms until significant vision has already been lost, making it a major cause of visual disability worldwide. Despite advancements in research, lowering intraocular pressure (IO
