Beside the automatic, obligatory and tonic coinnervation of the involuntary m. retroauricularis in conjugate lateral gaze (oculoauricular phenomenon, nystagmus) several other physiological ways of accidental coinnervation are described. Bilateral optic nerve hypoplasia affected five individuals corresponding to four generations of a family. Two decreased men were also apparently affected. The mechanical properties of human extraocular muscles have recently been described. This allows one to use the force-balance equation of mechanics to solve for the complete mechanical state of all six extraocular muscles and the passive orbital tissues in any eye position. This includes each muscle's force, length, innervation, and unit action vector, which describes how its force is distributed to act horizontally, vertically, and in torsion. Most important, this calculation method allows one to predict the tropias that occur in an eye subject to any imaginable form of peripheral pathology.

A 38-year-old patient showed monocular nonprogressing pigmentary changes for 8 years, with nearly normal blood vessels and scarcely restricted dark-adaptation. ERG and VER were different from those of the other eye. The affected eye had full vision and an annular scotoma corresponding to the pigmentary changes. The other eye was amblyopic due to strabismus. Phenotypes, similar to retinitis pigmentosa, and chorioretinitis diffusa are discussed. This is probably a congenital anomaly.

3 cases of cyclical convergent strabismus (48 hour rhythm) were investigated. In contrast to intermittant strabismus, cyclical strabismus is not fatigue dependant. An alteration in the rhythm of the cyclical esotropia was produced by wearing prisms, red glasses or occlusion for several days. The vertical vergences are rather weak physiological conjugate movements of the eyes. When the ocular axes approach each other or deviate, a vertical convergence or divergence occurs. These reflex movements are evoked either by visual stimuli (fusional vergence) or by labyrinthine stimuli. In pathological situations vertical vergences may become evident in permanent or alternating hyperphorias, in the strabismus occurring in the Hertwig-Magendie syndrome, in see-saw nystagmus and in labyrinthine lesions (such as Meniere's disease, after labyrinthectomy and after section of the VIIIth nerve).

Ocular dominance, as measured in sighting tests, involves a temporary suppression of the input from the non-dominant eye in order to avoid diplopia. Amblyopia ex anopsia may be viewed as a long term suppression of the input from one eye for the same reason.
