Surgical Outcomes of Intermittent Exotropia in Adults: A Systematic Review.

Adult intermittent exotropia (IXT) is less well studied than paediatric IXT, yet counselling is challenging due to postoperative exodrift, diplopia risk, and differing functional expectations. This systematic review synthesised surgical outcomes for adult (≥18 years) IXT. A Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020-guided systematic review of PubMed/MEDLINE was performed using two searches ("surgical" AND "outcomes" AND "exotropia"; "surgery" AND "intermittent exotropia"), limited to English-language human studies published within the last 10 years. Role of lifestyle modifications in glaucoma: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that lead to irreversible damage to the optic nerve and gradual vision loss. Although it can occur at any age, it is most commonly seen in people over 40. Globally, around 60.5 million people are currently affected, and this number is expected to rise to over 110 million by 2040. Often called the "silent thief of sight", glaucoma typically progresses without noticeable symptoms until significant vision has already been lost, making it a major cause of visual disability worldwide. Despite advancements in research, lowering intraocular pressure (IO

Congenital Ocular Motor Apraxia as the First Sign of Joubert Syndrome: A Case Report.

Congenital ocular motor apraxia (COMA) is characterized by an inability to initiate voluntary horizontal saccades, often leading patients to compensate with characteristic head thrusts. While COMA can sometimes present as an isolated ocular finding, it is frequently a manifestation of broader neurodevelopmental disorders. We report the case of a nine-month-old female infant presenting with developmental delay and abnormal eye movements. Examination revealed marked motor developmental delay, hypertonia, truncal arching, and poor head control. Notably, oculomotor apraxia requiring compensatory h

Automated measurement of horizontal strabismus in children's primary gaze photographs using deep learning and computer vision.

PURPOSE: To develop and validate algorithms that automatically measure horizontal ocular alignment in children's primary gaze photographs using deep learning and computer vision. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We proposed a two-stage artificial intelligence (AI) system, including deep learning (DL) algorithms for automatic segmentation of eye structure and computer vision (CV) algorithms to measure horizontal ocular alignment. DL algorithms were trained using a public ocular images dataset. The measurements of CV algorithms were tested in primary gaze photographs recruited from a tertiary hospital.

Acute Reversible Convergent Strabismus Following Accidental Lorazepam Ingestion in a Child: A Rare Ocular Manifestation of Benzodiazepine Toxicity.

Benzodiazepine intoxication in children commonly manifests with central nervous system depression, hypotonia, and ataxia. Ocular motor abnormalities are uncommon and may mimic serious neurological disorders, frequently prompting urgent neuroimaging. We report the case of an eight-year-old boy who presented with sudden-onset convergent strabismus approximately 30 minutes after accidental ingestion of 10 mg of lorazepam. On admission, he was hemodynamically stable with a Glasgow Coma Scale score of 15/15. Neurological examination was unremarkable except for acute esotropia. Brain computed tomogr

Different Laterality in Hereditary Monozygotic Twins with Duane Retraction Syndrome Type I: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Simultaneous contraction of the medial and lateral rectus muscles results in Duane Retraction Syndrome (DRS). The presence of a familial pattern in some cases suggests an autosomal dominant mode of transmission. Despite the variable presentation of this syndrome, its cause remains unclear. Describing the potential factors contributing to DRS in monozygotic twins may be effective in explaining its etiology. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a unique case of monoamniotic monozygotic twins case both 7-year-old Iranian girls with DRS type I, inherited from their 36-year-old father with DRS

Morphometric Variations of Extraocular Muscles in a Caucasian Cohort: A Pilot Study on the Surgical Implications of Ethnic Diversity.

Precise anatomical knowledge of the extraocular muscles (EOMs) is crucial, particularly for managing "slipped" or "lost" muscles in strabismus surgery. This pilot study provides the first morphometric data for Caucasian-specific, cadaveric orbits, revealing significant deviations from accepted anatomical norms. 6 Caucasian, formalin-embalmed orbits (86-92 years) were dissected using a superior orbitotomy approach at the Human Anatomy Unit, University of Birmingham. Recti and oblique lengths, insertion widths, limbal distances, and inter-recti distances were measured using a triple-observer, st

Is Isolated Inferior Rectus Weakness a Strong Indicator for Myasthenia Gravis?

BACKGROUND: Isolated inferior rectus weakness (IRW) has historically been reported as a possible presenting sign of myasthenia gravis (MG). Orthoptists often identify IRW, prompting further investigations. This service evaluation aims to determine whether patients with IRW or other symptoms were subsequently diagnosed with MG. METHODS: A retrospective review of patient case notes was conducted. The cohort included consecutive patients who presented to the adult strabismus service and received acetylcholine receptor antibody (ACR) testing between 2010 and 2023 at a tertiary referral centre in

A founder variant in Tunisian PMM2-CDG patients: An integrated clinical, radiological, biochemical, and genetic study.

PMM2-CDG is the most common congenital disorder of glycosylation, characterized by a broad phenotypic spectrum involving the nervous system and multiple other organ systems. The disorder is caused by biallelic variants in the PMM2 gene, leading to impaired glycosylation of proteins. Our objective was to provide a detailed clinical characterization and define the mutational spectrum of PMM2-CDG in the Tunisian population. We conducted a retrospective study on patients with genetically confirmed PMM2-CDG, followed between 2005 and 2024. Ten patients from six unrelated Tunisian families were enro

Ocular phenotypes associated with autism and atypical neurodevelopment: Insights from electronic health records.

Atypical visual perception is often described in autism spectrum disorder (ASD); however, few studies have characterized ocular conditions in ASD using basic vision metrics such as those collected in routine eye exams. The current study uses electronic health record (EHR) codes to establish ocular phenotypes across individuals with and without neurodevelopmental diagnoses, including ASD. Using a population health approach, we assessed ocular conditions (identified based on medical codes from the EHR) in N = 7518 pediatric patients across 4 groups: n = 1196 with ASD, n = 156 with Intellectual D
