Defining and measuring population-level amblyopia treatment outcomes: a proposal by the AAPOS Vision Screening and Research Committees.

Ophthalmic professional organizations such as the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) strive to support the optimal detection, prevention, and treatment of amblyopia to reduce the community burden of vision loss. To support population-level monitoring with regard to outcomes of childhood amblyopia screening and treatment, the AAPOS Vision Screening and the Research committees propose a set of guidelines for assessing population prevalence of persistent vision impairment due to amblyopia. The committees defined "residual amblyopia" as persistent vision impair

Novel Approaches to Surgical Correction of Strabismus Based on Current Understanding of Orbital Pulley Anatomy.

Recent anatomic and functional studies of the extraocular muscles have led to a new understanding that their proper function is dependent upon a complex collagenous orbital scaffolding. This structure, for which the term "pulley system" is a useful concise designation, maintains the positions of the eye muscles relative to the globe, to each other, and to the orbit. Disruption of this system results in muscle displacement and dysfunction. Novel strabismus surgical procedures designed to utilize this new anatomic knowledge may yield powerful results while lowering ophthalmic risk. Such procedur

The Management of Thyroid Eye Disease: From Current Practice to Future Perspectives.

Thyroid eye disease (TED) is a complex autoimmune disease, which can have debilitating and possibly sight-threatening consequences. TED can present with diplopia, strabismus, pain and exophthalmos. Despite pathophysiology not being fully elucidated, key components of the TED pathogenesis pathway have been established. Current management focuses on reducing inflammation in the active phase of TED and subsequently employs surgical interventions to rectify the clinical sequelae that arise post-inflammation. However, given the side effect profiles and varying efficacy of current treatment options,

An Atypical Presentation of Thyroid Eye Disease in a Patient With a Remote History of Graves' Disease.

Thyroid eye disease (TED) is commonly associated with Graves' disease, often occurring concurrently or shortly after its diagnosis. However, atypical presentations, such as TED emerging years after thyroid function stabilization, are rare and can pose diagnostic challenges. These delayed cases may lead to misdiagnosis or delayed treatment, underscoring the importance of maintaining clinical vigilance, even in patients with long-term thyroid stability. We describe a patient with a remote history of Graves' disease who developed TED years after achieving thyroid stability on hormone replacement

An AND versus OR study of retinopathy of prematurity screening criteria.

BACKGROUND: The current United States screening criteria for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is highly sensitive (gestational age [GA] of ≤30 weeks or birthweight [BW] of ≤1500 g) and often result in unnecessary examinations. Indirect ophthalmoscopic ROP examinations can be stressful for infants and require fellowship-trained ophthalmologists. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety of excluding low-risk premature infants: those who only meet one criterion of either GA or BW. METHODS: The medical records of premature infants who underwent ROP screening at a tertiary academic cen

Association between initial lipid and lipoprotein levels, oxidative stress indicators and clinical efficacy of intravenous methylprednisolone in moderate-to-severe thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy: protocol for a real-world prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO), the most common orbital disease in adults, is an autoimmune disease of the orbital and periorbital tissues. Typical ocular symptoms of TAO include periorbital oedema, conjunctival congestion and oedema, eyelid retraction, exophthalmos, restrictive strabismus, etc. Hypercholesterolaemia is considered one of the modifiable risk factors of TAO. However, it is unclear whether lipid levels are related to TAO activity and severity and the intravenous glucocorticoids (GC) therapeutic effect. The study aims to evaluate the association between initia
