Mechanical Properties of Eye Lens Cortical and Nuclear Membranes and the Whole Lens.

PURPOSE: To elucidate the mechanical properties of the bovine lens cortical membrane (CM), the nuclear membrane (NM) containing cholesterol bilayer domains (CBDs), and whole bovine lenses. METHODS: The total lipids (lipids plus cholesterol) from the cortex and nucleus of a single bovine lens were isolated using the monophasic methanol extraction method. Supported CMs and NMs were prepared from total lipids extracted from the cortex and nucleus, respectively, using a rapid solvent exchange method and probe-tip sonication, followed by the fusion of unilamellar vesicles on a flat, freshly cleave

The C-MAC video laryngoscope helps presbyopic anesthetists to overcome difficulty in neonatal and infantile intubation: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Endotracheal intubation (ETI) is a life-saving procedure that must be accurately carried on to guard against complications. Presbyopia leads to difficulty in viewing close objects and may obstacle proper intubation even with the best hands. PURPOSE: This study supposed that the use of video-laryngoscope (VL) may provide better intubation conditions for presbyopic anesthetists and targets to evaluate the neonates and infants' intubation success rates (ISR) by anesthetists aged ≥ 45 years using the C-MAC VL compared to the standard laryngoscope (SL). METHODS: Thirty-one neonates wi

Dynamical arrest for globular proteins with patchy attractions.

Attempts to use colloid science concepts to better understand the dynamic properties of concentrated or crowded protein solutions are challenging due to the fact that globular proteins generally have heterogeneous surfaces that result in anisotropic or patchy contributions to their interaction potential. This is particularly difficult when targeting non-equilibrium transitions such as glass and gel formation in concentrated protein solutions. Here we report a systematic study of the reduced zero shear viscosity ηr of the globular protein γB-crystallin, an eye lens protein that plays a vital ro

Quantification of the Anterior-Centripetal Movement of the Ciliary Muscle During Accommodation Using Dynamic OCT Imaging.

PURPOSE: Although the lens undoubtedly plays a major role in presbyopia, altered lens function could be in part secondary to age-related changes of the ciliary muscle. Ciliary muscle changes with accommodation have been quantified using optical coherence tomography, but so far these studies have been limited to quantifying changes in ciliary muscle thickness, mostly at static accommodative states. Quantifying ciliary muscle thickness changes does not effectively capture the dynamic anterior-centripetal movement of the ciliary muscle during accommodation. To address this issue, we present a met

Change in subjective well-being and the associated costs of a woman-targeted presbyopia correction programme among older craftswomen in Zanzibar: a cost-outcome and scenario analysis.

BACKGROUND: A pilot eyecare programme aimed to address the urgent eye health needs of older Zanzibari craftswomen. We investigated the impact of correcting presbyopia on their subjective well-being (SWB) 6 months post-correction and assessed the cost-effectiveness of a women-targeted presbyopia correction programme. METHODS: This study involved Zanzibari craftswomen aged 40 and older with presenting and corrected distance visual acuity better than 6/12 in both eyes and were presbyopic. Using a before-after method, we assessed SWB on a 10-point scale before and after providing free spectacles.

Visual, clinical and quality of life outcomes of a new multifocal IOL with optimized diffractive grating: a non-randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) are designed to reduce dependence on spectacles by providing multiple focal points. However, they are associated with photic phenomena such as halos and glare, and may reduce contrast sensitivity. The BIOS Trifocal is a single-piece acrylic diffractive IOL with a closed-loop haptic design, optimized for centration and stability. It features an aspheric, aberration-neutral surface and a precisely engineered diffraction grating for effective energy distribution across multiple distances. This study aims to evaluate the visual, clinical, and qualit

[Premium IOL's in glaucoma patients: Guidelines from the French Glaucoma Society (SFG) and the Society of the French Intraocular Lens and Refractive Surgery Association].

Recent advances in surgical techniques and intraocular lens implants have transformed cataract surgery into a true refractive procedure, enabling many patients to forgo optical correction. "Premium" IOL's offer multiple options for correcting refractive errors, including astigmatism, and addressing the effects of presbyopia. While cataract surgery is often beneficial for glaucoma patients, glaucomatous optic neuropathy can impair visual quality and impact the outcomes of premium IOL's, particularly multifocal IOL's. This concise review provides practical recommendations for the use of premium

Perceptual cost and benefit of presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses: effect of energy balance, addition, and adaptation.

Presbyopic intraocular lenses (IOLs) based on simultaneous vision represent a compromise between perceptual benefit and cost at near and far distances. We evaluated this compromise for simulated bifocal IOLs with varying energy distributions and additions using SimVis Gekko under different adaptation conditions. Presenting multifocal corrections after a blur adaptation with an abrupt transition of at least 5s improves acceptance. Smooth transitions to multifocality of at least 5s also improve acceptance, independently of previous adaptation. Corrections with low additions show more visual degr
