BACKGROUND: Tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) is caused by Borrelia species transmitted to humans by soft ticks of the genus Ornithodoros. Very little is currently known about the morbidity of this disease in Mali, despite the risk of human co-infection with malaria. The lack of appropriate diagnostic services or technical expertise to differentiate suspected malaria from other causes of febrile illness of unknown origin means that this tick-borne disease remains neglected and under-diagnosed in febrile patients in Mali. Our study investigated the detection of Borrelia crocidurae DNA in febril

Human tick-borne relapsing fever caused by Borrelia persica is common in western Asia. A survey of 301 horses in Israel revealed 9.96% seropositivity toward B. persica antigens; 1 horse (0.33%) was also PCR positive for B. persica DNA. Phylogenetic analysis supported a transmission cycle involving ticks, humans, and horses.

UNLABELLED: Pseudomonas aeruginosa AG1 (PaeAG1) is a Costa Rican strain that was isolated in 2010 in a major Hospital. This strain has resistance to multiple antibiotics such as β-lactams (including carbapenems), aminoglycosides, and fluoroquinolones. PaeAG1 is considered critical (Priority 1) due to its resistance to carbapenems, and it was the first report of a P. aeruginosa isolate carrying both VIM-2 and IMP-18 genes encoding for metallo-β-lactamases (MBL) enzymes (both with carbapenemase activity). Owing to these traits, we have studied this model for 10 years using diverse approaches inc

The isolation of tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) spirochetes has proven to be a useful tool to understand their distribution in geographic areas where the tick vectors inhabit. However, their isolation and culture are not easy and in general an animal model is needed to achieve this task. Here, argasid ticks were collected from a neighborhood in Ciudad Caucel, and they were identified as Ornithodoros (Alectorobius) puertoricensis. To determine whether these were infected with TBRF bacteria they were fed with healthy mice but only a low burden of spirochetes was observed. An immunosuppressed

Borrelia species are the causative agents of Lyme disease (LD) and tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) in humans and animals. These pathogens are transmitted through hard and soft ticks. The increasing tick population, influenced by climate change, underscores the urgent need for enhanced research on tick-borne diseases. Iran, situated in southwestern Asia, boasts a diverse climate that supports a wide range of tick species and their vertebrate hosts. While TBRF is endemic to Iran, recent reports suggest the presence of LD in the country as well. Understanding the various Borrelia species, their

Borrelia miyamotoi is a hard tick-borne spirochete genetically related to relapsing fever Borrelia and the etiological agent of an emerging infectious disease in humans. Like relapsing fever Borrelia, B. miyamotoi carries clusters of gene cassettes encoding variable major proteins (Vmps) on multiple linear plasmids and shows antigenic variation in mammalian hosts by switching the expression vmp gene cassette. However, it remains unknown how the switch occurs in B. miyamotoi. Here we determined the whole genome sequences of Japanese B. miyamotoi strains to identify the repertoire and arrangemen

INTRODUCTION: Tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) is a zoonotic disease caused by various species of Borrelia that are transmitted to humans worldwide through the bite of soft ticks belonging to the genus Ornithodoros. In Senegal, as in other endemic regions of West Africa, cases of TBRF caused by B. crocidurae and transmitted by Ornithodoros sonrai ticks are underdiagnosed. The disease is not well known among doctors, nurses, or the general population. In some regions, TBRF is the leading cause of vector-borne fever, surpassing malaria.

Several bacterial pathogens have transitioned from tick-borne to louse-borne transmission, which often involves genome reduction and increasing virulence. However, the timing of such transitions remains unclear. We sequenced four ancient Borrelia recurrentis genomes, the agent of louse-borne relapsing fever, dating from 2300 to 600 years ago. We estimated the divergence from its closest tick-borne relative to 6000 to 4000 years ago, which suggests an emergence coinciding with human lifestyle changes such as the advent of wool-based textiles. Pan-genome analysis indicated that much of the evolu

BACKGROUND: Louse-borne relapsing fever (LBRF) is a prevalent disease in Ethiopia, affecting malnourished and impoverished populations. Historically fatal, mortality has decreased to less than 5% with antibiotics. Symptoms include high fever, rigors, myalgia, hepatosplenomegaly, jaundice, and petechial rash. Diagnosis is challenging due to Giemsa-stained blood films and PCR in resource-limited settings. CASE PRESENTATION: A 29-year-old Ethiopian patient experienced abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and high fever for 3 days. Physical examination revealed low blood pressure, oxygen saturation

BACKGROUND: The body louse spreads diseases such as epidemic typhus and louse-borne relapsing fever and has shown resistance to various insecticides. While deltamethrin is used to treat infestations in some countries, research on its effectiveness against body lice is limited. This study assessed the susceptibility of body lice to deltamethrin using a bioassay.
METHODS: Body lice specimens were collected from an addiction treatment camp in Urmia City, West Azerbaijan Province, Iran. They were treated in 5 cm Petri dishes lined with 1 ml of various concentrations of deltamethrin (0.01, 0.02, 0

INTRODUCTION: Antigen rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) have been developed to facilitate malaria diagnosis in endemic areas. The blood samples collected for these tests can also be used to diagnose other infections.
METHODS: We performed nucleic acid extraction followed by PCR identification of dengue virus (DENV), Borrelia spp., Bartonella spp., and Coxiella burnetti on RDTs collected from different health facilities in Touba during the Grand Magal of Touba (GMT), a mass gathering known for its infectious disease risks.
RESULTS: A total of 2,381 RDTs were collected from eight healthcare facili

BACKGROUND: Fever of Unknown Origin (FUO) is broadly defined as a fever with an unidentified cause despite a minimum set of diagnostic investigations. The variability of FUO etiologies across geographic areas, age groups, and decades makes diagnosis challenging and complicates the adoption of a standardized diagnostic approach. Global warming and changing interactions between humans, animals, and the environment are contributing to the emergence and re-emergence of zoonotic infections. Emerging Vector-Borne Disease (VBD) pathogens circulate in Northern Italy, but their prevalence and impact on

BACKGROUND: Borrelia persica causes tick-borne relapsing fever, a potentially fatal human and animal disease, in the Middle East and Central Asia. The transmission of B. persica in Ornithodoros tholozani ticks has been reported to be transovarial, but little is known about the pathogen's lifecycle in its vector and other pathways of transmission.
METHODS: To further understand the transmission of B. persica, colony-bred O. tholozani ticks were fed on blood in an animal-free system, followed during three lifecycles, and infected with cultured B. persica. Spirochetes were detected, and bacteria

Other tick-borne microorganisms can cause symptoms that differ from those of Lyme borreliosis, often with a more acute course. Fever is the primary clinical warning sign, which may be accompanied by various other symptoms-cutaneous, neuromeningeal, and lymphatic-that help guide diagnosis. A clinical approach makes it relatively straightforward to distinguish Lyme borreliosis from other tick-borne diseases, with the common factor being the tick as the vector. Biological abnormalities (anaemia, thrombocytopenia, cytolysis, etc.) are often present in tick-borne diseases, unlike in Lyme borreliosi

Background: The taxonomic status of the relapsing fever spirochete Borrelia hermsii in western North America was established in 1942 and based solely on its specific association with the soft tick vector Ornithodoros hermsi. Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) of the 16S rRNA, flaB, gyrB, glpQ, and 16S-23S rRNA intergenic spacer of B. hermsii isolates collected over many years from various geographic locations and biological sources identified two distinct clades designated previously as B. hermsii Genomic Group I (GGI) and Genomic Group II (GGII). Tick-borne relapsing fever spirochetes of genus Borrelia thrive in enzootic cycles involving Ornithodoros spp. (Argasidae) mainly, and rodents. The isolation of these spirochetes usually involves a murine model in which ticks are fed and the spirochetes detected in blood several days later. Such an experiment also demonstrates that a given species of tick is competent in the transmission of the bacteria. Here, soft ticks Ornithodoros octodontus were collected in Northern Chile with the objective to experimentally determine its capacity to transmit a Borrelia sp. detected in a previous study. T
