Bradycardia-induced transient myocardial dysfunction in 3 dogs.

Bradycardia-induced cardiomyopathy is a reversible form of myocardial dysfunction caused by prolonged bradyarrhythmia, most commonly due to high-grade atrioventricular block or sinus node dysfunction. Although bradycardia-induced cardiomyopathy is well recognized in human medicine, it remains underreported in veterinary literature. This case series describes 3 dogs diagnosed with 3rd-degree atrioventricular block that presented with clinical signs including exercise intolerance, syncope, and cardiomegaly. Each dog underwent comprehensive diagnostic evaluation, including physical examination, t

The Dieffenbach Flap for Reconstruction of Auricular Defects After Mohs Micrographic Surgery.

Auricle reconstruction is a challenging problem in plastic surgery due to the ear's prominent location, complex anatomy, and limited local tissue availability. The Dieffenbach flap, a folded postauricular flap, offers a viable flap for reconstruction of larger ear defects. Although the technique has been well defined in previous literature, there are few studies evaluating its outcomes and complications. The authors conducted a retrospective review of patients who underwent auricle reconstruction with the Dieffenbach flap by a single surgeon between 2016 and 2022. Data collection included demo

Acute Otitis Externa: Rapid Evidence Review.

Acute otitis externa is an inflammatory condition that affects the external ear canal. It is usually of rapid onset and is generally caused by bacterial infection. The primary bacterial infections are Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. Acute otitis externa presents with pain (otalgia), redness, and swelling of the canal. It is more common in children and young adults. Tenderness on movement of the pinna or tragus is the classic finding. Analgesics and topical antibiotics are the mainstays of therapy. Topical medications include acetic acid 2%, aminoglycosides, polymyxin B, and q

Delayed pathologic tibial fracture with chronic osteomyelitis after fibula free flap.

The reported donor site morbidity of the fibula free flap (FFF) is low; however, several uncommon complications have been reported with tibia fracture rarely being reported. We present a case of a pathological tibial fracture in the setting of chronic osteomyelitis after FFF. A 54-year-old female presented with a benign fibro-osseous lesion of the right mandible and was treated with mandibulectomy and reconstructed with a left FFF. Approximately 1 year following surgery, the patient presented to the emergency department. Imaging showed a pathological fracture of the distal third of the tibial

Otolaryngeal and Oropharyngeal Conditions: Common Ear Conditions.

Ear pain (otalgia) is a common reason for visits to family physician offices and emergency departments. Otalgia is primary when the pathology originates from the ear, and is secondary for disease processes associated with otalgia and an ear examination with normal findings. The most common diagnosis related to otalgia in children and adults is acute otitis media (AOM). It is characterized by an erythematous, bulging, and cloudy tympanic membrane. Otitis media with effusion is the presence of fluid behind the tympanic membrane without signs of inflammation. Chronic middle ear effusion is manage

Superiorly based subperiosteal orbital abscess: an uncommon presentation.

A 32-year-old female patient presented with severe facial pain, right eye proptosis and diplopia. Endoscopy revealed ipsilateral crusting, purulent discharge and bilateral nasal polyps. Imaging demonstrated a subperiosteal abscess on the roof of the right orbit. Due to patient's significant ocular manifestations, surgical management was decided. The abscess was drained using combined endoscopic and external approach, via a Lynch-Howarth incision. Following rapid postoperative improvement, patient's regular follow-up remains uneventful. A subperiosteal orbital abscess is a severe complication o

Ultrasonography of auricular cartilage is a potential tool for diagnosing relapsing polychondritis and monitoring disease activity.

AIM: To assess the clinical utility of ultrasonography in the diagnosis and monitoring of disease activity in relapsing polychondritis (RP). METHODS: Auricular and nasal chondritis of 6 patients with RP were assessed by ultrasonography before treatment initiation. Changes in the ultrasonographic and clinical findings and serum inflammatory markers were longitudinally assessed. Ultrasonography was also performed in 6 patients with repeat ear trauma, 6 patients with auricular cellulitis and 6 healthy controls for comparison among groups. RESULTS: In all cases of RP, ultrasonographic findings b

Facial trauma aggravating paediatric orbital cellulitis.

We describe a case of paediatric orbital cellulitis with subperiosteal abscess following blunt facial trauma. Clinical features of orbital cellulitis developed on day 1 post-trauma. A subperiosteal collection subsequently formed lateral to the globe, causing significant ocular compromise. Surgical drainage and sinus washout were performed via external incisions, with satisfactory outcome. This case highlights how trauma may represent a non-sinogenic aggravating factor in orbital cellulitis. We describe how a subperiosteal abscess may vary depending on its aetiology, and how the surgical approa

Ligaclip for Preauricular Skin Tags in the Newborn.

INTRODUCTION: Skin tags are benign lesions, that often represent only an aesthetic problem; if subjected to trauma, they can occasionally bleed with possible infection and pain. When they occur in the preauricular region, attention should be paid to the diagnosis and approach; in fact, controversy exists in the differential diagnosis between hair follicle nevi, accessory tragus, and skin tag. Misdiagnosis and failure of treatment can lead to serious consequences, such as chondritis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In our retrospective study, we evaluated 19 newborns affected by single, unilateral skin

Acute lymphadenitis with cellulitis caused by Staphylococcus lugdunensis.

Although coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) have been considered part of the resident flora on the human skin, Staphylococcus lugdunensis is an unusually virulent CNS and can cause many types of infection. We report a rare case of acute lymphadenitis with cellulitis in the right infraauricular region caused by S. lugdunensis. A 62-yr-old woman visited the Department of Otolaryngology of Busan Paik university hospital. She had a palpable mass and swelling in the right infraauricular region and complained of aggressive pain and a febrile sensation in the region for 5 days. On the suspicion o
