INTRODUCTION: Risk factors for unsuccessful healing of a tympanic membrane perforation following myringoplasty lack consensus. Large cohort studies are missing.
METHODS: Data were collected for myringoplasties (with/without concomitant ossiculoplasty) performed the years 2014-2019 with a follow-up visit using the Swedish Quality Register for Ear Surgery (SwedEar). Risk factors for unsuccessful surgical outcome, defined as non-healed tympanic membrane at follow-up, were calculated using logistic regression.
RESULTS: The study population included 3622 cases and 12.8% had a non-healed tympanic

OBJECTIVE: The retrospective cohort study compares tube location in the anterior-inferior quadrant versus the posterior-inferior quadrant and time of tube retention along with the risk of early extrusion and perforation. The study hypothesis holds that both anterior-inferior placement and posterior-inferior placement are equally effective and safe locations for tube placement with equal tube retention and risk for tympanic membrane perforation.
METHODS: An IRB-approved retrospective chart review was completed at a major Academic Center's Children's Hospital. The study included data from child

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP) is frequently associated with otologic symptoms because of Eustachian tube dysfunction. However, the clinical relevance of otologic symptoms in patients with CRSwNP and their response to biologic therapy remains poorly characterized.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate baseline determinants of ear-related symptoms and evaluate the impact of dupilumab treatment.
METHODS: This post-hoc analysis of the Dupilumab In Severe Asthma (DISA) study included 23 adults with CRSwNP and severe uncontrolled asthma. Participants underwent a 12-week trea

Lemierre syndrome is a rare condition characterized by septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein with metastatic septic emboli, most commonly affecting the lungs. We report a case of Lemierre syndrome temporally associated with influenza A infection in a previously healthy 21-year-old male. The patient initially presented to the emergency department with severe headache and tested positive for influenza A. Over the following seven days, his symptoms progressed to neck pain with decreased range of motion, hemoptysis, cough, and persistent myalgias. Despite four additional emergency d

Introduction Otitis media with effusion (OME) involves the accumulation of fluid in the middle ear and is a common cause of hearing loss. While nasal congestion is thought to contribute to OME by affecting eustachian tube function, the role of nasal airway resistance remains unclear. The aim of this study is to evaluate nasal airway resistance in patients with OME using rhinomanometry and investigate its potential relationship with hearing thresholds. Methods This retrospective study included 30 patients with chronic serous otitis media (CSOM) and 30 healthy controls. Nasal airway resistance w

Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is predominantly associated with type 2 inflammation, although the inflammatory profile may involve both eosinophils and mast cells. Middle ear disease in CRSwNP is usually attributed to Eustachian tube dysfunction, but inflammatory involvement of the middle ear may also occur. We report the cytological evaluation of middle ear effusion from a patient with CRSwNP. May-Grünwald-Giemsa staining revealed eosinophils, mast cells, and extracellular granules consistent with degranulation. The simultaneous presence of these cellular components suggest

Otomycosis is a fungal infection of the external auditory canal that may extend to the tympanic membrane. Although commonly caused by Aspergillus and Candida species, infections due to uncommon fungal pathogens may present diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. We report the case of a 46-year-old woman who presented to the Department of Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) with intense pruritus of the right external auditory canal, associated with a whitish discharge and tympanic perforation on otoscopic examination. Mycological analysis of the ear discharge identified Candida lusitaniae. To our knowledg

OBJECTIVE: Chronic tympanic membrane perforations generally require surgical repair, most often via tympanoplasty. While effective, these procedures involve anesthesia, carry significant costs, and may not always be accessible. The objective of this review is to explore biomaterials and biological therapies that could promote tympanic membrane regeneration and potentially reduce the need for surgery.
DATA SOURCES: PubMed and Google Scholar between September 1958 and December 2025.
REVIEW METHODS: A PRISMA-guided systematic review of clinical studies about biomaterials or biological therapies

INTRODUCTION: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), a disorder of motile ciliary dysfunction causing chronic respiratory infections, may also rarely present with aspects of non-motile ciliary dysfunction, including retinitis, central nervous system malformations, skeletal dysplasia, and sensorineural hearing loss. However, congenital microcephaly has not been previously associated with PCD.
METHODS: We identified three children with congenital microcephaly and chronic respiratory disease consistent with PCD. Comprehensive PCD diagnostic testing and whole exome sequencing were performed. Character

Obesity and intentional weight loss increasingly influence otolaryngologic disease through mechanical, metabolic, inflammatory, gastrointestinal, and regional soft-tissue effects. This review examines how bariatric surgery and contemporary medical weight-loss therapies affect the upper aerodigestive tract. Evidence is strongest for obstructive sleep apnea, in which substantial weight reduction improves disease severity but does not ensure remission. Emerging data suggest potential benefits for chronic rhinosinusitis and selected voice outcomes, alongside risks such as procedure-specific reflux

BACKGROUND: External auditory exostosis (surfer's ear) is a progressive condition of benign hyperostotic overgrowths of the external auditory canal, secondary to repetitive cold-water exposure, in which symptoms correlate to degree of exostosis. Surgical intervention is the only available treatment, most commonly using the osteotome or microdrill, but these carry a risk of sensorineural hearing loss, post-operative stenosis, temporomandibular dysfunction and tympanic membrane perforation.
METHODS: We describe in detail the Swansea technique, an innovative method of canaloplasty with endoscopi

BACKGROUND: Extensive cartilage-harvest during tympanoplasty can result in tragus atrophy. It can bring inconvenience to life by impairing headphone or hearing aid use. This study proposed a modified technique to preserve tragus shape and function by creating a large cartilaginous-perichondrial complex and repositioning the cartilage ring into the tragus. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 53 patients undergoing type I tympanoplasty compared outcomes between an experimental group (n = 27 ) and a control group (n = 26). Postoperative outcomes—including tragal cartilage function scores, graft s
