Epidemiology of Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media: Systematic Review To Estimate Global Prevalence.

BACKGROUND: Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media (CSOM) is a disorder characterised by a perforation of the tympanic membrane leading to ear discharge and hearing loss, a disability causing marginalisation in employment, education, social stigma, and reduced wellbeing and quality of life. Previous studies on the global epidemiology of this condition, despite methodological limitations, have estimated global prevalence at 200 million. METHODS: Adhering to PRISMA guidelines, published literature was systematically reviewed across Ovid and Embase databases, with original community-based studies on C

Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media.

BACKGROUND: Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) has caused many hearing disorder cases in developing countries. Inappropriate antibiotic use resulted in a shift of bacterial resistance. The biofilm-forming bacteria, like Pseudomonas aeruginosa, was a common germ detected in CSOM that contributed to a poor prognosis. This study aimed to investigate the bacterial pattern from samples taken from CSOM patients regarding its antibiotic susceptibility and the antibiofilm activity of acetic acid against P. aeruginosa. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sterile swabs of forty-five patients with CSOM were col

Saikosaponin D inhibits the inflammatory response of secretory otitis media through FTO-mediated N6-methyladenosine modification of TLR4 mRNA.

Secretory Otitis Media (SOM) is a non-suppurative inflammatory disease of the middle ear. Saikosaponin D (SSD), a compound with significant anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, was investigated for its preventive effects and underlying mechanisms against SOM. A rat model of SOM was established through intraperitoneal ovalbumin injection. Middle ear lavage fluid (MELF) and tissue samples were collected for comprehensive analysis, including bacterial load quantification, neutrophil enumeration, and inflammatory factor assessment. HEK293T cells were utilized for mechanistic validati

Causal relationship between gastroesophageal reflux disease and the risk of chronic suppurative otitis media: a mendelian randomization analysis.

OBJECTIVES: While existing research has indicated a potential link between gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM), these findings primarily stem from observational studies, which are inherently limited by confounding variables and methodological biases, thereby reducing their reliability. This research sought to elucidate the causative link between GERD and CSOM. METHODS: A two-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) study was conducted using genetic data to assess the causal relationship between GERD and CSOM. Pooled genetic data for GERD

ROS-responsive adaptive injectable hydrogel promoting inflammatory mastoid bone repair through efficient sterilization and regulating oxidative stress and macrophage phenotype.

Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) and middle ear cholesteatoma (MEC) are prevalent disorders in the otology specialty. A major challenge is efficiently eliminating dormant opportunistic infections, controlling inflammation, and repairing defected mastoid portion in the middle ear simultaneously to enhance surgical recovery. Herein, a functional injectable polysaccharide-based hydrogel targeting low-cost and easy clinical translation was developed to address bone abnormalities caused by inflammation in the middle ear through introducing a reactive oxygen species (ROS)-sensitive dynamic cr

Management Strategies for Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media and Why They Fail.

Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) affects up to 330 million people globally and is one of the leading causes of pediatric hearing loss. Defined by a state of chronic infection in the middle ear in the setting of a tympanic membrane perforation, CSOM is traditionally most frequently associated with infection with Pseudomonas and Staphylococcus aureus species. The current therapeutic options for CSOM include medical therapy in the form of topical antibiotics or antiseptics (i.e., boric acid, acetic acid, povo-iodine), as well as surgical intervention with tympanoplasty or tympanomastoidect

Case Report: A rare case of tuberculous otitis media mimicking chronic suppurative otitis media - an ongoing challenge.

Ear tuberculosis, a rare form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, predominantly affects the middle ear. The common symptoms of ear tuberculosis include otorrhea, hearing loss, and facial nerve paralysis, and if left untreated, it can lead to complete deafness. Diagnosing ear tuberculosis can be challenging, as its symptoms often overlap with those of otitis media, leading to potential misdiagnosis. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential for a favorable prognosis. Delayed diagnosis or inadequate treatment can result in severe complications, incl

Identification of Differential Metabolites in Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media With Non-Targeted and Targeted Metabolomics Approach.

Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is a leading cause of hearing loss and otorrhea, and when associated with cholesteatoma, it can pose a serious threat to patients' lives. This study aims to identify differences in tissue metabolites between patients with CSOM, both with and without cholesteatoma. Metabolomic profiles were measured in tissue samples from 42 surgically treated CSOM patients (35 with cholesteatoma, 7 without cholesteatoma). Significantly altered metabolites associated with CSOM were identified using a non-targeted metabolomics approach and a targeted metabolomics approach.
