Human papillomaviruses are a heterogeneous group of DNA tumor viruses associated with hyperplastic (warts, condylomata), dysplastic (CIN and VIN), and malignant lesions (carcinomas) of squamous epithelium. Open lung biopsy (OLB) was performed on 66 patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome from November 1981 through December 1987. Twenty-two patients with severe respiratory failure died within a month, 3 during operation. Gastrointestinal disease in AIDS is common and is due to opportunistic infections, aggressive malignancy and possible direct HIV enteropathy. Disabling gastrointestinal symptoms are prominent both in patients with established AIDS and in patients with earlier stages of HIV infection. Serum sickness is a systemic hypersensitivity reaction initially reported in children receiving horse serum. Drugs such as penicillins, cephalosporins, and sulfonamides are now noted to be the most common etiologic agents of serum sickness-like reactions. This case report describes a serum sickness-like reaction temporally related to ciprofloxacin, a previously unreported adverse effect of this drug or any of the other quinolones.

In 4 years (1984-1987), 183 bone marrow examinations were performed on 155 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) antibody positive patients. One hundred and fifty three had category IV AIDS. The presence of antibody to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in post-partum women may be inferred by screening the blood of their newborn babies, since maternal IgG antibodies freely cross the placenta. We tested a sample of 10,217 newborns from 10 hospitals covering three areas in Sydney and other metropolitan centres in New South Wales from April to July, 1989. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) in a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected person is an AIDS-defining condition. There is both an increased incidence of NHL and a poorer prognosis for the disease in these HIV-infected persons, compared with patients who spontaneously develop NHL. Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) with [123I]N-isopropyl iodoamphetamine--[123I]IMP--was used to study regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in 94 psychiatric patients and six controls. We report a case of post-asphyxic bilateral thalamic hemorrhage in a 9 month-old infant, consecutive to a hemophilus hypopharyngitis. The neuropathologic study revealed that it was in fact a hemorrhagic necrosis associated to diffuse necrosis of the hemispheres. This case is compared to the other reported cases of thalamic hemorrhage and the physiopathologic mechanism is discussed.

Thirty cases of chondroblastoma treated (between 1950 and 1986) at the Cochin-St-Vincent de Paul group of hospitals in Paris were reviewed. The most frequent sites (63 per cent) were the proximal epiphyses of the femur, humerus and tibia. The male predominance is clear (63 per cent) and the lesion was generally discovered in the second decade of life (66 per cent). Three cases of intra-articular invasion were noted, of which one involved a meniscus.
