The objective of the present study is to evaluate the Eustachian tube (ET) acoustic patency during phonation. The sound level in the EAC during phonation of the "A" and "N" sounds was measured by microphones in the bilateral EACs of nine normal subjects and 31 patients with patulous ET. The measured sound pressure differences between the right and left ears were correlated with the differences in severity of autophony between the bilateral ears assessed by a visual analogue scale (VAS). The patulous condition was often remarkable when the "N" sound was phonated. In some patients with patulous

This report presents a 55-year-old woman who underwent 2 Teflon injections in 1971 for a patulous eustachian tube. The patient returned in 2006 with a bloody left otorrhea. A positron-emission tomography-CT scan demonstrated a 2-cm hypermetabolic parapharyngeal mass, initially interpreted as a skull base tumor. Repeat neck CT confirmed a 2-cm hyperattenuated left parapharyngeal granulomatous mass. This is the first reported case of a Teflon granuloma presenting as a false-positive parapharyngeal mass.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to treat autophonia due to a patulous eustachian tube using botulinum toxin.
METHODS: Because we assumed that the patulous eustachian tube was caused by abnormal activity of paratubal muscles (tensor and levator veli palatini muscles and salpingopharyngeus muscle), paralysis was performed via injection of botulinum toxin type A in a 45-year-old female professional musician who had had chronic unilateral autophonia for 20 years. In addition to a patient interview, an endoscopic examination of the nasopharynx (posterior rhinoscopy), ear microscopy, and impedance audiometry

OBJECTIVES: The impact of cranio-maxillofacial procedures upon Eustachian tube function is still largely unknown. The aim of this presentation is to depict new aspects of Eustachian tube function and to demonstrate its importance to cranio-maxillofacial surgery.
METHODS: Two different groups of patients were examined both clinically and by MRI of the Eustachian tube region. One of these groups comprised 15 adult patients with a history of cleft palate; another consisted of 32 patients with a history of a so-called patulous Eustachian tube.
RESULTS: Clinical and MRI-findings revealed that the

OBJECTIVE: Nasal-noise masking audiometry was developed to assess the acoustic transfer function from the nasopharyngeal cavity to the middle ear via patulous eustachian tube (ET).
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective.
SETTING: Tertiary referral center.
PATIENTS: Twenty-seven ears of 18 patients with patulous ET and 20 ears of 10 healthy subjects with no history of ear disease or complaints of aural symptoms.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Audiometric measurement was conducted with and without masking noise presented in the nasal cavity.
RESULTS: The masking effect of nasally presented noise caused elevatio

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the contribution of anatomical factors, such as the caliber of the patent eustachian tube (ET) and the volume of the middle ear cavity, on vocalized sound transmission to the inner ear.
METHODS: Model experiment using artificial middle ear.
RESULTS: In the present model experiment, sound transmission from the pharynx to the inner ear under patulous conditions was affected by the caliber of the ET and by the mastoid volume, especially in the low-frequency region, that is, a larger caliber of the ET and smaller mastoid volume resulted in greater sound transmission fro

OBJECTIVE: To determine eustachian tube function in patients with asthma and with or without eosinophilic otitis media (EOM), a new middle ear disease entity with a highly viscous middle ear effusion containing many eosinophils and usually associated with bronchial asthma. One of the most important causes of otitis media (OM) is eustachian tube dysfunction.
DESIGN: Retrospective case review.
SETTING: A referral center.
PATIENTS: Twenty patients with EOM and patients with asthma but without OM.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: We studied eustachian tube function using sonotubometry and a questionnair

Pharyngeal orifice of the eustachian tube was ligated on ten patients, 15 ears with intractable patulous eustachian tube. While the eustachian tube orifice was observed by an endoscope inserted through the contralateral nostril, the orifice was ligated transnasally and/or transorally using instruments usually used in the endoscopic nasal surgery. Now 13-27 months after the surgery, the outcome was excellent (both symptoms and sonotubometry were normalized) in two ears, good (either symptoms or sonotubometry was improved) in seven ears, and unchanged in the remaining six ears. In one of the ear

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to summarize the recent knowledge on eustachian tube dysfunction and the patulous eustachian tube.
RECENT FINDINGS: A clinically useful test for eustachian tube function is still lacking. Narrowing of the isthmus alone was demonstrated to be an insufficient cause of otitis media. Inflammatory mediators identified within the eustachian tube and middle ear cells were causally linked with otitis media with effusion. Increasing evidence was found that allergic disease and reflux may be two of the most important contributors of tubal inflammation ca

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To describe temporal bone findings using visual inspection and direct measurement on computerized tomography (CT) in individuals with branchio-oto-renal syndrome (BOR). We ask if it is possible for the untrained observer to use a battery of CT observations as a tool in the overall evaluation of the BOR phenotype.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective evaluation of CT findings in individuals with a clinical diagnosis of BOR based on criteria derived from genotype-phenotype analyses.
METHODS: Prospective measurement of temporal bone CT imaging in 21 individuals (42 ears) with BOR

CONCLUSION: Trans-tympanic insertion of a new silicone plug seems to be useful for controlling the distressing symptoms of patients with a chronic patulous Eustachian tube (PET).
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of a new silicone plug for blocking the isthmus of a PET in patients whose symptoms were resistant to other therapies for > 6 months.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The silicone plug (total length 23-25 mm; tip diameter 1.0-2.0 mm) was inserted in 44 ears of 37 patients with chronic PET. It was inserted through the tympanic orifice of the ET to obstruct the isthmus of the tube via an

OBJECTIVE: To assess the acoustic transfer function of the Eustachian tube by means of audiometric measurements in order to evaluate the severity of the patulous condition.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Detection thresholds for tones presented in the nasal cavity (at the nostril) were measured in subjects with a patulous Eustachian tube (PET) and in normal subjects.
RESULTS: In typical cases, these thresholds were lower in the subjects with PET and were markedly elevated to the same level as those of normal subjects by the insufflation of Lugol's solution (iodine solution). The pre- versus post-insu

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the 3D anatomy of the ET and its surrounding tissues in cases with or without patulous Eustachian tube (ET) using CT with the multiplanar reconstruction (MPR) technique.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty patients with a patulous ET and 25 without middle ear problems were investigated. After performing a temporal bone CT examination, MPR images of the ET were reconstructed and measurements were made.
RESULTS: The ET lumen and its surrounding tissues were clearly identified. In the patulous ET group, the ET lumen was open throughout the cartilaginous portion and the volume of

BACKGROUND: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) otorhinorrhea can rarely complicate lateral skull base surgery, necessitating sealing of the eustachian tube. Patulous eustachian tube (pET) can also be an indication for closure of the eustachian tube.
METHODS: Representative cases and the technique will be described.
RESULTS: The authors describe a technique used in three cases of CSF otorhinorrhea and one case of pET to successfully close the eustachian tube.
CONCLUSIONS: Previous reports have described methods of eustachian tube closure utilizing nasal endoscopic techniques. These techniques have re
