OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the subperiosteal abscess (SPA) volume in acute coalescent mastoiditis (ACM) as measured in imaging studies, should influence the decision-making process between performing mastoidectomy versus needle aspiration or incision and drainage (I&D) as the initial treatment of SPA.
SETTING: Single tertiary referral center.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The records of all pediatric patients admitted with ACM between 1/2012 and 12/2023 were retrospectively reviewed. Baseline abscess volumes were measured on dedicated segmentation software for analyzing imaging findings. SPA vo

Cholesteatomas are non-malignant, expandable diseases that, if left untreated, can destroy the middle ear, temporal bone, and other structures. Their recurrence can cause disastrous effects, for example, skull base destruction, acute mastoiditis, and brain abscess, etc. Therefore, they need early diagnosis, and it might necessitate surgical intervention according to the complications. We present the case of a 30-year-old male patient who came to the emergency department with a picture of acute right-sided mastoiditis. The patient complained of a one-day history of right ear pain, ear swelling,

BACKGROUND: Acute mastoiditis (AM), a complication of acute otitis media, remains a concern despite medical advancements and often leads to severe complications such as cerebral sinus vein thrombosis (CSVT). This study aimed to characterize the clinical, microbiological, and hematological aspects of CSVT secondary to AM in children while assessing the necessity of thrombophilia evaluation in these patients.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on pediatric patients with CSVT secondary to AM between January 2015 and December 2022. This study examined clinical data, laboratory and mi

This study aims to investigate the incidence of acute mastoiditis in patients with brain metastases undergoing whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT). A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients with brain metastases who received different doses of WBRT. The incidence of acute mastoiditis within 6 months post-radiotherapy was observed. Patients were divided into four groups based on the radiation dose: 25, 30, 36 and 40 Gy. The incidence of mastoiditis in each group was statistically analyzed. A total of 209 patients were followed up, with no cases lost to follow-up, and the follow-up time was

Here, we present a case of a 15-year-old female who presented with an unusual association of intra-temporal (peripheral facial paralysis and petrous apicitis) and extra-temporal (extra-Dural empyema) complications of acute mastoiditis, which was managed with conservative treatment. To our knowledge, this is the first report of such an association. Acute mastoiditis is inflammation and/or infection of the mastoid cavity, which is the most common complication of acute otitis media, although the incidence of complications from otomastoiditis has significantly decreased in the 21st century as a re

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to determine whether initial conservative surgical treatment of acute mastoiditis (AM) leads to an increase of morbidity, and to report on recent developments in epidemiology and microbiology.
METHODS: At the end of 2016, a new guideline for treatment of pediatric AM was introduced at our tertiary referral center. Mastoidectomy in case of a retroauricular abscess was changed to retroauricular needle aspiration or incision. All patients diagnosed with AM 2017-2021 were identified retrospectively in our patient file records and all relevant clinical data ret

PURPOSE: Acute mastoiditis (AM), the most common complication of acute otitis media in children, can lead to severe complications, including intracranial involvement. Since COVID-19, AM epidemiology shifted, with increased cases, altered seasonality, and new bacteria involved. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence of acute and complicated mastoiditis pre- and post-COVID, assess changes in clinical outcomes and bacterial profiles, and identify risk factors for complications.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study in a tertiary pediatric center included children under 18 diagnosed with A

Already in 2021 it was reported, that the COVID-19 pandemic influences the incidence of acute mastoiditis in children. The goal of this multicenter cross-regional study was to collect and analyze a substantial pre-, peri- and postpandemic data set.Absolute case frequencies were inquired from six segments: epidemiology, medical history taking, spectrum of pathogens, course of disease, therapy, and imaging. Nine ENT clinics in Germany reported about a 6 year time frame from 2018 to 2024.251 acute mastoiditis emergency cases were seen. There occured 69 pre-pandemic, 31 pandemic, and 151 post-pand
