Fibrin glue enhances early hearing recovery in tympanoplasty: A randomised controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of fibrin glue versus Gelfoam in cartilage tympanoplasty, focusing on graft uptake rates and short-term hearing outcomes. METHODS: In this double-blind, randomised clinical trial, forty-six patients with dry tympanic membrane perforations were randomly allocated to two groups: fibrin glue with cartilage graft (Group A) and Gelfoam with cartilage graft (Group B). A single surgeon carried out all surgeries. Graft integrity and air-bone gap (ABG) closure (≤15 dB) were evaluated three months post-surgery. RESULTS: Graft uptake rates were 91.3% in the fibrin gro

A Novel Long-Term Tympanostomy Tube: The U-Tube.

PURPOSE: Tympanostomy tubes are essential for middle ear ventilation, but conventional long-term tubes carry high perforation rates (12-22%). This study evaluated the Tympanostomy U-Tube (TUT), a novel silicone-based tube designed to minimize perforation risk by redistributing pressure away from the tympanic membrane rim. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of 192 ears in children aged 1-4 years who underwent TUT insertion for chronic otitis media with effusion or recurrent acute otitis media. The primary outcomes were tube insertion time and the permanent perforation rate. Mean fo

Comparison of moist and dry environment in traumatic tympanic membrane perforation healing: study protocol for a multicenter randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic tympanic membrane perforation (TTMP) is common worldwide, with a reported incidence as high as 6.1%. Conventional management advocates keeping the ear canal dry and strictly avoiding topical ear drops. Under this "dry-ear" regimen, however, tympanic membrane (TM) healing is often slow and often ineffective, especially for large perforations. We previously demonstrated that both exogenous growth factors and 0.3% (w/v) ofloxacin eardrops can accelerate closure of TTMP, with no significant difference in efficacy between the two treatments. This raised the question of whether

Examining Tympanostomy Tube Outcomes in Indigenous vs. Non-Indigenous Children of Northern Quebec.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic otitis media with effusion (COME) and recurrent acute otitis media (rAOM) pose significant burdens on pediatric patients and their families. These conditions disproportionately affect marginalized populations, such as Indigenous communities in Canada, where higher incidence rates and reduced access to care are well documented. This study aims to better understand the sequelae of rAOM/COME following tympanostomy tube (TT) insertion in Indigenous pediatric patients living in northern Quebec. METHODS: A retrospective matched cohort study was conducted on children who underwen

Insect in the Ear-Response and Treatment of an Uncommon Prehospital Emergency: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Foreign bodies in the external auditory canal are an uncommon presentation in emergency settings. Among adults, insects represent a frequent organic foreign body, often causing symptoms such as otalgia, tinnitus, vertigo, and anxiety. Prehospital management of such cases is rarely addressed in the medical literature, with minimal guidance available for emergency medical services (EMS) personnel. In this report we discuss their role in stabilizing patients and reducing discomfort through appropriate interventions. CASE REPORT: A 40-year-old male called EMS after a live insect ent

Deep Learning-Based Semantic Segmentation and Classification of Otoscopic Images for Otitis Media Diagnosis and Health Promotion.

Background/Objectives: Otitis media (OM), including acute otitis media (AOM) and chronic otitis media (COM), is a common middle ear disease that can lead to significant morbidity if not accurately diagnosed. Otoscopic interpretation remains subjective and operator-dependent, underscoring the need for objective and reproducible diagnostic support. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) offer promising solutions for automated otoscopic image analysis. Methods: We developed an AI-based diagnostic framework consisting of three sequential steps: (1) semi-supervised learning for automatic r
